The most heartbreaking thing for me is realizing that the small, yet significant, window of time that i was just okay was an aberration & would not be tolerated. I didn't need nor want the very bizarre shows of gratitude that were the norm in the beginning, i just need to be okay.

I live in Europe. And the 1930s part is correct. But its for migrants and specifically Muslims. We are dehumanised, marginalised and constantly targeted by politicians for "easy points". Jews are fine here, even though they might not feel safe. Muslims are actually unsafe here.
