When I was a kid I always just assume from the covers that each book was a one off story about a kid who's prejudiced against an animal morphing that animal and learning about it like Wild Kratts or that one magic school bus episode. Good to know that my childhood speculation makes more sense than what it was.
i dont even know why im watching this. my bio literally says '#1 vriska hater'. i actually think vriska is pretty cool but i just hate her because of what she did to tavros. im a taurus and when i was reading homestuck i found the idea of characters being linked to certain star signs to be super awesome, so naturally i got attached to tavros. ive also been through 'tough love' before and it did not help me at all so i found tavros's situation to be relatable. vriska had the right intentions in trying to help tavros, but she went through with it in the worst way. she shouldve noticed that tavros was not going to get better if she continued.
"Magic draws it power directly from the Backyard, and I am serving as an intermediary. Frederick's fists will carry more energy than anything on this planet is capable of producing. I convert that energy into matter and you contain that in a pocket dimension using the Schwarzfield radial limit. We then destroy the physical space occupied by the barrier, creating a spontaneous microverse. The rest is simple; we only need to ensure that the world isn't destroyed in the process." -That Man
You know, I'm watching this in 2024, and it's AMAZING how little has changed. Culture has died since this was made. The only difference between 2018 and 2024 is skibidi toilet.
at 1:00:00 munchie just starts sperging tf out and the next hour is you just trying to navigate around him and then the last 45 minutes is trying to cram 2 hours of notes in 45 minutes and it's so unfortunate, i liked it and was hoping you'd get back on track but c'est la vie i guess. but munchie ruined this lecture fr.
Thank you so much for doing this, really liked the presentation and you and your friends are really funny, you stopped my urge from getting involved again (at least directly) with homestuck.
1:41:20 just when I thought this couldn’t get anymore autistic, we get a Homestuck troll reproduction explanation. I’m really glad I found this video, I feel right at home
finding a small pretty unknown podcast that lasted THIS long that has already ended and theres been a shitton of drama or whatever is pretty surreal this is like a whole other universe damn
I’m 7 years late so it’s unlikely anyone will see this but Nate’s ranting on Sanji’s backstory is driving me nuts. SUBTEXT is the key here. Sanji was an abused neglected kid who only received love from his mother (and sister to an extent) and was taught that if he was not up to the standards his family wanted he was disposable and easily thrown away. So when his adoptive gruff tough love father figure-who we see on the same page is willing to hit Sanji as punishment-tells him he would cut off Sanji’s balls and kill himself if he hit a woman, OF COURSE Sanji is going to internalize the shit out of that. Zeff is still a way better parent than Judge ever was but I think having the nuance of a loving parent still being able to be wrong and fuck up their kid makes for a very interesting story. Sanji probably even saw this as a good thing back then because it meant that even if he fucked up Zeff would still see and treat him as *family*, unlike Judge who threw him away and told him he never wanted to be known as Sanji’s father again. His facial expression of realization in the last panel seems to indicate as much. Sanji’s inability to hit women actually used to annoy the shit out of me but having this context actually makes it interesting to me now even though it makes me mad/disappointed at Zeff. Maybe I’m giving Oda too much credit but child abuse does fucked up things to people’s heads, and having a seemingly small moment have such a profound impact on his behavior is characteristic of that. I think it’s also very deliberate that the only people who had shown kindness to Sanji prior to Zeff were women as well.
Certified Sanji enthusiast here, and I absolutely couldn’t agree more. I’m glad to see so many people sounding off in the comments about how weird Nate’s rant was as well lmao. One thing I want to mention is that yes, Sanji is a fictional character in a fictional world full of weird fictional shit (i.e. it ain’t that deep, as the kids say,) but One Piece has the unique benefit of being around for a LONG ass time which has allowed its main characters to become more fleshed out than usually possible with other series. Sanji is a very, very good natured boy down at his core and a victim of horrendous abuse, specifically at the hands of four negatively masculine family members. The only people to show him any kindness until he escaped was his mother, who he already idolized prior to her death which itself scarred him, and his sister. I find it really bizarre that people don’t understand how much value Zeff’s opinion would be to a kid Sanji ESPECIALLY after we’ve already been shown how the seeds of his preference for “feminine” things/activities and women have been sown. Zeff is the positive, masculine father figure Sanji wanted so desperately and almost definitely didn’t think he’d ever have, so to have him not only approve of and harbor an environment for his interest in cooking, share his dream of finding All Blue, literally CHOP OFF HIS LEG to save him from starving, adopt him, put a roof over his head, AND tell him that yeah, women ARE precious and you shouldn’t lay your hands on them? OF COURSE SANJI IS GOING TO COMPLETELY ENGRAIN THAT INTO HIS SENSE OF SELF ARE YOU KIDDING ME? It’s also obvious that he just loves women period, so he’d probably end up with a similar moral compass anyways! Just wanted to add that on to your comments lol, hope you don’t mind.
@@frenchynoob Nope I think finding his dream and hope for a future while he is imprisoned and at his lowest is cool actually. The part that sucks is that it's only a single panel.
@@CatCamryn fair enough, I think it would've been way more cool if reading classic North Blue myths with his Mom was a thing they bonded over, and him reading about All Blue in one of those stories for the first time happened _with her_ . Then reading it in the cell later couldve been a much more poignant "spark" cuz it wouldve been a reminder of his many bed time stories with his mom... but hey, _I'M_ not a world famous mangaka...
I come back once a year for new PCP university lectures. Those things were the shit. Looks like that series is dead now. Went out with a mega man lecture as well. 😔
