I absolutely love how he holds himself. I dont know what it's called, but he keeps his posture straight. So many men dance leaning this way and that and don't keep a 'centre' around which they dance. As a viewer, watching people dance with poor dance posture/ form is confusing and unsightly, even, whereas his posture is a visual delight and adds excitement.

I've been dancing for about 5 years and I feel like I can't work anything new into my social dance. I'm super frustrated. I don't care about stacking up against my peers but I do care that I feel stuck
Think I recently read about that in a leadership book. They called this concept internal versus external goals. Internal goals are the ones you influennce yourself (how much time you put in or what you train on). On external goals you have little control (winning a trophy). Focussing on external goals is almost nevera good idea.
I’ve been getting into swing dancing this year. I do alright when an instructor is counting out the steps, but I struggle to stay in rhythm when they put on the music and everything feels twice as fast. Any advice for practicing on this?
When I competed in pro-am, ~20 years ago, I always said that I was seeking my teacher's smile, not a trophy. I STILL remember one instance of a big smile from her!
Dancing is a sport so I think actually incorporating an exercise regimen to support it is very beneficial. Not so much modern gym training where you train according to muscle tension and body parts (arm day, back day, leg day, etc.), but train according to movement patterns (like crawling, climbing, swimming, any martial art, other dances, etc.). One or both dance partners with mobility, flexibility, balance, endurance, and other athletic limitations need to work on those things to improve their dance quality. Just keep in mind it took time for those things to deteriorate so it'll take time to improve. Don't get discouraged and definitely do not wait to dance for the perfect opportunity once you've perfectly addressed all those personal athletic limitations because that day will never happen. Just always work to improve, keep a realistic mindset about where you are, and above all, remember to have fun.

Yes for sure - it's pretty normal for people to just choose the role they want to dance. Back in the day it was Men Lead and Ladies Follow. Now you'll have Males Leading and Following and Ladies Leading and Following. So don't sweat. Chose which role you want to dance and go for it! Hope that helps -Brian
Would have been more helpful if you would have actually demonstrated with some music when making videos on counting with music. Three videos in and still not there.
Depends on the dip but typically when you come up from a dip the leader should make sure the follower comes up on the left foot in a closed position. Then the start of a new pattern out of closed position. This isnt the only way but the way we use the most. The counts will vary if the dip went down on 34 then it would make sense to come up on 56 but it would depend how long the dip is held and when you do into the dip.
When working forwards, (3:13) you are stepping ball of the foot first, while Megan is stepping heel first. Is that a leader-follower difference or mood of the moment difference. Could you say Which is preferable?
Heel leads verses toes leads are a preference for both leader and followers. Heel leads allow for more control as a newer dancer mainly bc rolling toe to heel is harder. I have a ballet background so toe leads are more natural, however I actually use a combination of toe and heel leads through out the dance and depending on who I'm dancing with.
@@WestCoastSwingOnline thank you for the detailed explanation. It looked a bit rumba-ish because of the added hip movement, which some tango leaders also do, though heel leads are way more preferable even in argentine tango.
I might be totally wrong here, but isn't there a spelling mistake in that new shirt you're wearing? It says "...starts with a walk walk and ends with anD anchor". Shouldn't it be "... and ends with an anchor"? Or am I missing something here?
Country swing looks very similar to Social jive 🤔 east coast swing is like a milder version of ballroom jive, and then I recently discovered videos of rockabilly jive. . . it is never ending 😂
The middle pattern goes perpendicular to the slot to the leader's left and the others go to the leader's right. I think I understand but I'm gonna have to re-watch a few times to make sure I understand the nuances to leading these. Seems like an additional two counts is needed to go perpendicular to the leader's left. Maybe sounds weird but I'm equating the middle one to a sugar push and the other two to a right side pass even though these are not necessarily 6 count patterns (in the middle one, the left hand never crosses midline of his body and the follower is being sent away around count 4 as in a sugar push. In the other two, the left hand crosses midline and the follower is lead down a path around count 2 as in a right side pass). All that to say, very cool patterns! You got me thinking 😆
