Thank you so much for doing this video. I struggled with the same problem for about a year and was not able to remove the bolts no matter how much wd 40 I put on them. After watching your video, I was able to remove the bolts and the expansion nuts. I got to Home Depot and was able to purchase the screws and the expansion nuts but I could not find the adapter from Bemis. The new toilet seat I bought came with 2 plastic bolts and wing nuts which were intended for a toilet that one could get to the bottom and screw in the bolt/nut. So I took a hack saw and cut off the head of the plastic bolts, drilled a hole in the middle of each bolt head and used them in place of the Bemis adapter. It worked!
If you have to pull the bolt out, it can be helpful to hit it sideways a few times to loosen it. Hit it in one direction once, then in the opposite direction once, and repeat this a few times. I also had to drill one of the bolts out, and I started with a very small diameter bit angled at about a 45 degree angle and drilled to eat away at the metal. I gradually worked up to slightly larger diameter bits, never having to get all the way up to the 5/16" drill bit the Kohler mfr's official seat bolt anchor replacement video recommends. Use cobalt drill bits. Once the anchor was loosened from drilling on it, I pushed it down and it fell away.
I have two Rialto one piece toilets from the bold look of Kohler. I regret dearly ever buying these nightmare toilets. I have installed at least THREE repair kits form Kohler. They clearly use their customers for testing. They had too many problems to list here. DON'T BUY Kohler ANYTHING!
Thanks for the video - when I called Kohler theysaid buy the removal kit for $34.95 on Amazon. This toilet has been a nightmare ever since the first one lasted only 2 yrs since the no longer had parts for the supeflush unit in it; had to get new toilet. Kohler terrible on service. I also bought a Bemis as replacement since I refuse to pay $190.00 for Kohler replacement seat to match my one piece-price gouging!! Since I am eldery lady with none ofthese tools gues I have to cal plumber to replace my toilet seat
I have essentially the same, Craftsman brand. It's great for leaves but I also use it for cleaning up the pavement. I'm on my second bag and they should have improved the design by now, but I see no difference in current, 2024, models. Air leaks develop at both ends of the bag and leaves and dirt can blow out. I made some seals out of old blue jeans and duct tape. I've had tears that I've fixed with Gorilla Glue and denim. After 10+ years of good service from the Techumseh engine, it is leaking some oil on top of the deck. It still starts on the first pull, even after sitting all winter. I'm looking for some other vacuum to replace it. All I see is the DR, but it seems to have a better bagging solution.
Same issue. However I went down this path serval time, just like you, maybe more. But thank God for your video. I was just about to order another Kohler anchor. But started another round of my RU-vid search and found your video. I am going to Home Depot and maybe Menards TODAY. Thank You. 👍
Not bad...for a job that (on any other toilet) would taken 10 minutes max! But I'm glad I found your video. We need to change out one of these and this will be very helpful!
I am stuck with one in my parents’ bathroom upstairs and I can’t twist the screw-wing-twist thing out since the hole is like half an inch in diameter or something like that. Thanks David for the help! I can try some of these suggestions. I couldn’t seem to find a video about this particular horrendous toilet model and how to deal with it and it’s half an inch or so sized hole where it’s so hard to take the screw out. 🙂↕️😅 Why on Earth would Kohler make such a badly designed toilet in which you have so much trouble changing a seat??? 😒😤
Nice, been struggling with the wrong hardware delived for a week now. You got it, kicked that toilets ass! #10-32 x 1-1/16 in. Brass Expansion Nut Model #814368 does it and it suggests the correct stainless screws when ya add em to the cart. Thanks man!
This was a great source of information. I probably would have been talked into a new toilet if I hadn't seen this. I found the expansion nuts at Menards and bought stainless steel screws and washers. At the end I had the original seat firmly in place. Fingers crossed that it will be easier if there's a next time.
David, you are my hero. I have a Toto soft close with the same issue and yours is the only helpful video I found. The replacement directions on our model are straightforward however ours is CONCEALED like yours with no way to access the tightening nuts provided without tentacles (which I do not possess). I don't know why toilet designers do things like this, there are many working designs around this on later concealed toilet designs unfortunately ours is an older model before reason and common sense kicked in. I'm now off to Home Depot or Amazon for expansion nuts. Dumb things drive me bonkers and I can really feel your pain. I'm glad you resolved this nonsense and hopefully I will too.
I've been trying to chamge my toilet seat for 3 months now. Today new dremel bits arrived. Finally starting to make a drilled hole into one of the bolts. Have to keep going. Looks like I have to order new drill bits again. This is the worst toilet in human history.
Excellent source of information on how to tackle this problem.Thank you so much. I found that Home Depot no longer stock the Everbilt 1 1/16" expansion (or well) nuts. But my local Ace hardware store had a drawer with 1 1/2" #10-32 well nuts for which I got #10-32 3" stainless steel pan-head screws. These have a much more substantial head than the #10-32 1 1/2" Everbilt screws and are needed to reach the 1 1/2" well nut. Be sure to put the #HK36 adapter over the well nut before you tighten the screw to expand the well nut and wedge it in place. On my first attempt the screw was drawn into the soft rubber of the well nut and would not come out so I had to sacrifice it by drilling it out and then doing it the right way with the #HK36 adapter in place before cinching up the well nut to wedge it in place. The EverBilt stainless screws have puny heads and you should insert and extra washer into the #HK36 adapter before tightening it up to prevent the screw head pulling through the #HK36 hole into the well nut soft rubber upper.
Was looking for new Koholer seat and wound up here. I have to say LMAO pun intended. I have a Kohler Rialto toilet installed by plumber which worked fine for about 6 months after that it became a Ford (Fix Or Repair Daily) toilet. After 6 months it began running continuously and required adjustment almost daily until adjustment used up and had to buy new flush valve assy and then another. By 3rd time learned there was a repair kit and went to plumbing installer with kit number and he plops down the entire assy again. I guess the parts guy thinks everybody except plumbers are stupid, he's quite the sales man or so he thinks. $60 assy vs. $12 kit, hum let me think? Found a work around for the never ending running toilet by using the standard wall valve. By the time was about to buy 3rd std. wall valve bought a ball valve type instead. Had a grey Kohler toilet seat which with age has now turned about the color of your seat/lid. This has been going on for 40 years LOL. Will chek out that Bemis seat. Thanks for sharing.
FYI: Call Kohler and you should be able to get the kit. I wonder if they have done anything to correct this problem? Mines 18 years old and while I did get the kit from them for free i never did use it as we were afriad it would crack and were not paying someone 150 to do this. Frankly, I cant believe a company of there size and supposed experience made this mistake or am I missing something.
I thought I might have had a lemon, until I posted this video and saw all of the other folks who had the same issue! I actually got the kit and one of the anchors broke and kept turning after I installed.
I had a Troy built chip vac brand new. It lasted only three years and the engine blew. It was serviced yearly and used only in the fall. The bag was replaced 5 times at a cost of $189.00 each, because the fasteners on the diaper broke off and could not be replaced. The machine back was open and when you used it the dust blew in your face and by the time you finished using it you were really dirty. When I first bought the machine and added oil to it, used it for 10 minutes and it was leaking oil. Brought it to be serviced by authorized Troy built service recommended by Troy built. The oil seal had to be replaced and Troy built doesn’t cover oil seal replacement even though the machine was brand spanking new. I had to pay the $95.00 to replace the defective seal. I should have returned the machine, my stupid mistake. I had an old Troy built that was used for 23 years, 1,000% better than the new cheap ones built in china! They are a piece of Junk!
Wow, sounds like you had a terrible experience! I just finished year three and its still going strong and made my life a lot easier this year. I read a lot of folks had issues with the bag before I bought it, so I i have been careful how I handle it and I'm still on the original bag. I fill about 30 - 40 bags a season. I was also warned about the dust the machine puts out. The first year I actually bought a disposable suit, but I never used it... I probably could have. The other thing that I learned this year is aside from wearing earphones, because it is loud, you should wear a respirator/mask. I didn't in the beginning of the fall, and inhaled some god awful thing that had me coughing for weeks. I now put on an N-95. All that said, for me, this machine has made the nightmare of cleaning leaves, more manageable than any device I have ever owned.
Thank you! I followed everything, My old seat was still attached - I got one anchor out because it broke while trying, then yanked on the seat until the second anchor came out. Installing the new anchors- yep I broke one of Kohler's $12 aluminum anchors, and had to drill it into the cavity in the toilet. Waiting for a new set from Amazon, so I'll get 2 more chances. yay!!
sorry, just saw this... my bag holds a good amount. I sometimes blow leaves into a large pile and then run over them with the machine and its amazing how much it compacts the piles. What has been your experience?
I tried everything until I finally stumbled upon a merchant at EBay who sold the correct hardware: the expansion nut with the hex hedge screw and the regular screw, and also the bolt that made it possible to hold the hex hedge screw in place while tightening to expand.
Yeah, really not thrilled with the hose vacuum. I tried it a couple of times and was not impressed. for my shrub and garden beds i use a blower and then I use the Vacuum to run over the piles and pick them up.
Thank you for this excellent, informative video! Home Depot wants something like $950 for this delivered (self propelled unit) I was leaning towards getting a lawn tractor but I like mowing with my Lawn Boy walk mower so this machine seems like it may solve my leaf problem without getting a tractor. Thanks again!
@@davidcomora I ended up buying it on-line on the Troy Bilt site. Got it with tax for around $800. I had so much fun with this thing. My neighbor has a huge willow tree that drops these branches all over my yard so it was therapy to feed them into the chute! I removed the hose assembly because I just use my leaf blower to clear the leaves away from the house and then pick them up with the leaf vac. It's not so clumsy then. It works great. Starts on the first pull and did everything as advertised.
Will this suck up those pesky little helicopter leaves. They seem to get stuck in the grass. The rack or leaf blower doesn’t work, they stay stuck or cling in the grass.
You will notice that when the bag fills up, that the unit is harder to push due to increasing weight. Mine is a 10 year old Craftsman with variable ground speed self propelled making the work much easier. It also can be switched to a nozzle exhaust to be a blower too.
Yeah, I'm 61 and the arthritis is kicking in... I love the machine, but sort of wish I went with the self-propelled version these days, as it does get heavy.
