Pretty much agree on all points, the show isn’t perfect but it’s quite solid, and while I am generally not very enthralled by Bethesda’s contributions to the series , I have to hand it to the todd for a series he was intimately involved in being such a good distillation of what makes fallout interesting. And importantly, it FEELS like playing a fallout game for the first time, I think my favorite moment was when Lucy looked at the ripper and back at the enclave dude and said okey dokey to herself. Absolute 100% fallout moment. I personally have two minor gripes, one being so core and fundamental that it ultimately doesn’t matter, and the other being silly: 1. I don’t love that they went out of their way to make LA post apocalyptic again instead of post-post apocalyptic. I really enjoy the themes of society rebuilding and while they obviously touch on it, conveniently they figured out how to make the story a rehash of the messy and kinda incoherent world of fallout 3. But like I said, this is so baked into Bethesda fallout complaining about it is tilting at windmills lol. 2. They criminally underutilized Ma June and Barv. I DEMAND that we get more Ma June and Barv. I would pay good money to Amazon for a web series that’s basically clerks but it’s all the weird situations and travelers they encounter running a junk shop in Filly.
they nuked shady sans, an og fallout map in fallout 2 and 1, todd hates obsidian. it’s not a good fallout show, you can say it’s a fine show, but not as a fallout one. california is supposed to be thriving not in ruins like bethesda fallout games force.
I agree, west coast should be thriving but for the general masses they see Fallout as a post apocolypse, not the post-post apocolypse that 2 and New Vegas are. I guess Amazon were trying to make a show that appeals to the most people, as opposed to a show for the diehard west coast fans
I would give it 6/10. Maximus is boring and useless for the story. Lucy father's evil plan was random and would not work anyway... Lucy's mother and her friend.. again, their story was not making much sense... shame.
I feel like the show missed the mark in most areas tbh. They don't explain the ideals/factions of the NCR or BOS, which to people who to never play the games might confuse them(as well as other things like never explaining the pipboy, Enclave etc). The retcons in the show are unfavorable and distasteful towards the West Coast games. Shady Sands moving to the Boneyard, the Eastern Brotherhood somehow in a decade becomes a diet Enclave(if they wanted dumb and cult like bad guys, Caesar's Legion is right next door to the NCR), Shady Sands not being the capital, the iron man suit power armor. Then the writing is the worse bit for me. Maximus being a complete moron while being a member of the BOS doesn't make sense, he can scavenge pre-war tech and identify it, but doesn't know the birds and the bees. The Master not raiding the vaults in literal sight of the Cathedral in the Boneyard. The 33 vault dwellers not detecting rads on the raiders when they pose as the dwellers from 32. The Enclave existing at all, Titus not surviving the yao gaui, but when Maximus wears the armor it actually does its job. Even then why doesn't the Ghoul destroy him in Filly since he knows the weakens in the model? 3/10 for me, only saved by set design and The goat(Ghoul)
Fair enough! You bring up some really valid points and I definitely agree with some of them, especially the logical inconsistencies of the writing. I do think it's strange that FEV and The Master are never brought up, as you said. Maybe we'll see some of the Legion and the Unity in Season 2! The problem is that Fallout is massive and has so many facets of lore that they can't really fit it all in to 8 episodes while having a smaller personal story. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
The retcons are like, whatever. It's not really a retcon since the show is seperated from the games. It doesn't change the series itself since the show exists outside of the games. Like the Shady Sands relocation is just to explain away travel time. It's not that big of a deal. Also, Fallout's always been woke lmao

When you said on discord that you’d give it a 6 or 7 I thought you’d have a lot more negative to say, but I was pleasantly surprised. Makes me wonder what sets your standards for an 8-10, haha!
A 10 is a perfect peice of media, and very few things actually manage that! I only call it a 7 because there are more things I'd like to see and I think the pre-war section was a bit wasted on me. But to a viewer who's never played the games in depth, they might really appreciate it! Thanks for your kind words man!

reasons why i much prefer Fo2 rather than Fo1: 1. More well done worldbuilding with settlements having intricancy and connections between each other, economically fo1 have its foundations but didnt went that further to explain which kinds of productions each settlement specialized at in order to trade with different settlements, fo2 really used the economic concept of Comparative advantage, exploring that every city focused on producing more of certain resources in order to have a highlight in the world's economy. Vault city being the provider of medical suplies, where NCR provided nearby regions with food (due to their brahmin herd) and water, being the biggest economical power in south california, the NCR also stablished the usage of Gold coins as a trading method, trying to return to the ways of the old world, which as a result, valued the resources of redding, which had a gold mine,etc.... it feels stronger and more well connected. This also influences quest design. 2. The differences in politics and places influence the gameplay either. General rule in fo1 was that you shouldnt hold your gun when entering a different town. In fo2 the rules of each place will depend on their policy and structure. NCR followed the rules that were previously stablished by Fo1 with the addition of Raiders being permanently banned from the city, Anarchic societies such as New reno wouldnt care for such things. its the rule of the strongest, everybody has to have a weapon and know how to fight in order to survive that hole. This wasnt the case with vault city, which was so isolated and restrictive that just wouldnt allow for any outsider to climb into its walls, so the player has to get a day pass to join the city just at mornings and go at night, couldnt enter with drugs and had extremely limited acess to which places he could or couldnt get at without becoming a full citizen. THATS immersion. 3. Evil playtroughts do work. In fo1 this isnt a thing. evil npcs were coded incorrectly and just doing the mainquest gave you way too much good karma, while you didnt have acess to a whole lot of negative karma givers. this meant you literally have to go on a killing spree for no reason in order to get negative karma, which wouldnt work at the end of the day. Fo2 made evil playtroughts awesome. 4. Better itemization: Big guns had literally 3 weapons in Fo1, an extremely low ammount of guns, fo2 has LMGS, multiple miniguns, a variation of the Flamethrower and a bunch more. small guns have more well done weapons, instead of having just 1 smg you have like, 5, theres more armors, better weapon progression,etc... 5. Better build balance: Unarmed is good now, charisma has uses instead of being a dump stat and so do multiple skills, hell, Sneak is extremely great in this game, even steal is better (althought here is because of sheer game design and not skill changes itself). 6. Better companion A.I: No questions. 7. Encounters make sense: instead of people traveling throught the desert in groups of 1 or 3 people, now we have bigger groups that are much better equipped, it not only works better to paint the world as harsh, but its actually dangerous to travel around locations, unlike Fo1 which was a cakewalk. 8. Freedom and CNC: Most of choice and consequence in Fo1 was restricted to instant reputation penalties and people refusing to talk to you, aside from that, ending slides. Fo2 has much more than that. Early on you can irritate Lynette by not doing the Ghoul quest correctly and get permanently banned from Vault city. You think it stopped there? Later on you could find a questline revolving around Jet and how much it caused problems in a lot of different regions in the wasteland, specially in redding. Trying to help, you might try to investigate, tracking the source of the Jet problem in New reno and finding myron. If you ask Myron about a way to heal jet addiction, you will find about a possibility to create a vaccine using a resource that you cant find anywhere else aside from Vault city. Guess what? you was banned from that place, essentially creating a chain of events that lead the entirety of the wasteland to be doomed by jet addiction. Fo2 isnt "quantity over quality", its overall better quality as a whole.

Fallout 1,2,tactics were far superior games than Vegas and fallout 3. And you're just being a sheep with your hate towards Brotherhood of Steel. The game was actually quite good for what it was. It was definitely more faithful to the lore than 3, 4 and Vegas.

Journey is one of those games I keep hearing great things about and want to play but just never get around to it for one reason or another. I finally got around to watching this, and as someone who has very little knowledge of the Fallout franchise this was still super enjoyable! The editing was simple but effective and nearly all of the jokes landed for me! (4:06 in particular is too real) Only real complaint I have is the lack of, or very quiet music, especially when you're specifically **talking** about certain tracks from the game. I know that most of the OST is likely ambient tracks and I think you **are** playing them sometimes but they're simply too quiet compared to your voice. I had to rewatch and crank the volume to make sure they were even playing cause I thought I imagined them 😭 All in all very epic video Tubbz hopefully I'll have time to watch the Fallout 2 one sometime soon lol 🙏
Yeah, there's a tonal shift between FO1 and FO2. It's like a movie with the first being a tense survival-drama with bits of action, and the sequel being just as loved, but more of an action movie. In this case, you've got the 'absolute virgininal wastelander, vault dweller fish out of water with very very nasty things all over' vs 'bottom of the barrel wastelander tribal that at least has experience in the waste, but has sticks and spears whereas there are very nasty things with mechano-servo powered armour and expanding civilisation' Looking forward to the FO:T video, as I think that game gets a bit of a kicking unjustly.
Agreed, I do wish that Fallout 2 felt more like "tribal" with different types of spears or something but I get why it isn't. Tactics will be fun to tackle!
