The Kentucky Automobile Dealers Association (KADA) is a trade association representing Kentucky’s new and used car dealers. Formed in 1938, KADA is dedicated to providing the highest quality service to Kentucky’s dealers. KADA is here to protect the interests of dealerships throughout the state and with the Kentucky General Assembly and state regulatory agencies.
Most Americans cannot afford an ice car for travel and an ev for local, not to mention the source of charging electricity, which is probably coal. Then the environmental question of mining battery components, not to mention spontaneous thermal runaway fires. No thanks!
Perhaps Massie needs to take a road trip in a recent Tesla in 2024 and not tell stories about road tripping in 2013. This have vastly improved! I just drove from New Jersey to Chicago in a Model Y and never had to wait for a charge longer than it took me to eat and go to the bathroom.
I saw a short clip of Congressman Massie asking Buttigieg about power demand equating a refrigerator to an EV saying an EV takes 400 times the power. That seems like a poor choice to compare. An EV is more like the load of an AC. The statistical average person drives 37 miles a day, that is around 11.1 kWh for an EV using 300 watts per mile. Charging at night would be no problem for the grid. People are not using the AC as much at night and most other loads have also been reduced. Things will change as we go forward in time, there are other large power hungry businesses like computer farms. We will work out how these are accomplished. This power load situation is a long-term problem and will be solved in the next decade or two. We didn't build all of the roads first we build them as needed.
Love Thomas, he needs to spend a little time learning about the CCS charging networks and how the rest of the EV world lives. He is right Tesla has it all in place and it makes it dead simple to own an EV. It is pretty easy and getting even easier now by the day. So things are getting better. Like he said on a daily basis it is easier to own an EV than it is a gas/diesel vehicle. EV's are fun and can do most of what people do in a car. The politicizing of EV's is a huge mistake. Tesla has agreed to open up their network. Everyone is moving to the NACS Tesla standard for the plug so things are moving to a single standard in the US. We need more infrastructure. It is a national security issue. We need baseload and storage. Look up Tesla Megapacks. The grid power feed from the car is called V2L(vehicle to load) and V2G(vehicle to grid). It is being worked on today. Lots of progress has happened since this interview. We still do not see any Super Duty or Heavy Duty vehicles that are electrified yet.
Massie says Biden wants 50% of every car sold to be electric by 2030, then gives stats for "if half of all cars were electric"... except most consumers are not going out to buy a new car. Even at 50% of new cars being electric, overall saturation of EVs would take several more decades to reach 50%. Most people would continue driving their current vehicles.
... Except that the goal is to get us out of our ICE age cars and in to our 15 minute cities. ULEZ, insurance, No spare parts available, all these means and more to pry those old clunkers, if you will, out of our cold dead Elon batteries. Fasten your seat belt.
We have zero problem roadtripping in an EV. Its clear Massie owns an old Tesla with low range and alow charging. New Model S goes 400 miles and charges back to 80% in 20 or 25 minutes. DC to Kentucky would probably be one charge.
Many of the voters in his area can not afford $40k. Many folks can only afford a used car that has to do everything well. I’m glad you are in a good enough financial situation to buy a great car like a Model S. I sincerely am. We need to acknowledge that everyone is not as fortunate as us. Some folks need a good ICE vehicle. I think you missed the point of his conversation.
@jeremyanderson7741 the average price of a new car in the US is $49K. Many people in Kentucky can't afford any new car - not just EVs. That's why used vehicle options exist though.
This is damage to factory fresh new cars. The dealer should give a discount for damaging the OEM road-certified and factory QA tested brake indicator just as if they scuffed the paint and did a mediocre repair inferior to the factory finish.
Massie throws some shade at Ford for not having a reliable charging network available, since Tesla's proprietary NACS connector prevents Fords from using the Supercharger network. But since this video was posted, Ford (along with many other OEMs) have adopted the NACS connector. This video provides a good example of how quickly technology is changing. Ford management saw a problem and moved to resolve it. As an evolving technology, EVs will continue to improve to minimize their shortcomings. The same can't be said for ICE.
This video is old. Tesla already does Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) from people who store energy in batteries. There will be Zero problems with the Grid. He KNOWS that he merely needs to add more Battery Storage and he solves ALL his off the grid problems. Same for nearly every home or business. EVs Globally this year will outsell the ENTIRE US Market. The US is dragging arse because BIG OIL and BIG Coal OWNS part of Congress. Pretending that China hasn’t already hit about 50% plugins and will wipe out nearly ALL ICE sales in China by the end of the decade is sticking your head in the sand (or BIG OIL money pot.
I like Massey, but his "you are paying for the fuel in the cost of an EV by buying it with a 20-30k battery" theory is deeply flawed. You still have to buy the electricity to "activate" as he says, the battery. Your fuel is electricity which you buy though its cheaper, and a 20-30k gas tank. Not a deal. For a math guy he certainly didn't do the math.
EVs need to have the ability to tow a small "range-extender" trailer, a small gas/diesel-powered generator that can provide a steady recharge of the batteries. It can be left parked when not needed, or even rented out to someone else to use for a few days. Think of it as a "modular plug-in series hybrid".
Clearly you don’t own an EV because that’s foolish. Norway is already 90% New EV sales and will replace almost ALL of their entire fleet by the end of the decade. They don’t need range extenders and drive all over their VERY Long country.
Being from California Massie is by far my favorite person in Congress. Like his practical statements on owning an EV. Since this interview Ford will soon be using Tesla superchargers. I think Tesla is far ahead of everyone, but I think Ford will be getting it together soon on EV.
Ford is likely to go BK in the next downturn. GM is already losing HALF its sales in China in the next couple of years. They can’t make enough EVs that people want to.
Scam pure and simple. It comes pre-installed by the dealer at a huge marked up price. You can have it removed, but you do have to pay a dealership service fee. You can not have a vehicle delivered factory new without it, even though the factory does not install it nor promote its installation. It is a dealerships' underhanded upcharge for a worthless product. You can remove yourself but have to have some knowledge of car wiring. I wonder if there is can be a class action lawsuit for tampering with oem products?
He makes some good points but the stuff about batteries made in China is a tiny bit off in that China has all the lithium mostly because they are the only ones interested in it. There is lithium all over if we want to mine it. Also there is sodium batteries. I guess the thing he does not say is that EVs are being made by Tesla and the Chinese, and they are getting cheaper, and big cities don't like the pollution from ICE engines. We need to have an EV industry, but we need to include the dealers as well. I think a good way to go is to lease the batteries which gives the dealership some residual business from EVs.
Let me save you all some time.... ALL of the information discussed in this video is related to legacy OEM brands. It's all about the lame EV offerings from the ICE manufacturers and their excuses for why their electric vehicles are not able to compete with the Teslas.
Pulse is a scam that dealers are adding to cars to make more money ,, it takes very little time to install and honestly its more of a distraction to others then a help. I just got suckered into it by my car dealer - told him no add ones - and he said that one was non-negotiable,, now my brand new car is going to have a blinking light that makes it look like a bulb is going out.
