Hi John, I have all mine on shelves normally, so I'll doublecheck the fit for all the UHQR and One Steps from MOFI, Impex and Craft when I get back from vacation in a couple of days. For sure the dowel spine UHQR would have to go in spine up, but I have to see if there's enough clearance to sit under the edge properly. I'll get back to you Sunday night.

Thanks for the tip on the 2016 reissue of this album. Do you know how much of their catalog was re-released during this campaign by the same group/people responsible for this one?

I think it was Close to the Edge and The Yes Album, but I believe the former is cut by Chris Bellman. I'll see if I can dig up info on Discogs. Looks like Close to the Edge was 2012 by Bellman The only Rhino release of The Yes Album was cut by Ron McMaster At Capitol, and I've not heard it but if you love The Yes Album go straight to the Atlantic AP 45. It's worth every penny.

I know this series is a few years old, but it seems you do respond to later comments. I've only recently found your channel and am enjoying catching up on these old classical labels episodes. The other day I picked up a box set from the Time Life Records series called The Story of Great Music: The Romantic Era. It has a slide out box like the Reader's Digest boxes, with a slim booklet A Listener's Guide to the Records and a larger booklet with a history of the Romantic era filled with nice color paintings! Mendelssohn, Liszt, Chopin, Verdi, Schumann, and Berlioz. It's also in excellent condition. I haven't had time to listen to any of it, but I also have a set of 10 Time Life cds I bought in the 90's called Classical Favorites. Great works performed by great conductors and soloists. I believe it was a monthly mail order series. Are you familiar with this lp series, and was it as well known as the Readers Digest? Thanks for all these videos on Living Stereo, Mercury Living Presence and this current one. It's great to see someone keeping alive the memory of this era.

So cool you are going back through some of my older content! This was a favorite video at the time. I was very happy with it. It also showed me there was an audience for some classical reviews. I think the Readers Digest recordings are in another level in that they were all done specifically for this series under the guidance of Gerhardt and Wilkinson. The Time Life selections were pulled from many different sources and labels. Pre existing recordings. So I never really took to the series. I tried a few and found I preferred the readers digest approach to the project. Still for people that had no idea where to start and wanted a simple way to be exposed to the classics, the Time Life records would fit the bill. I see the Readers Digest recordings on the same level as original Decca recording, in other words superb in their own right.

This popped up in my feed, and I was very happy to see that one of my favorite vinyl people did a review on this killer album. I alternate between Pink Floyd and The Doors as my favorite rock band of all time. If Jim Morrison didn't have such an untimely death and The Doors with Jim went on to make more music, it is very possible The Doors would be my favorite band of all time. I must concur with how terrific this version of the LA Woman album sounds. 😻 I was thrilled to hear that Doug Sax did his magic on the AP/QRP release. His The Mastering Lab also originally mastered the Pink Floyd The Wall album, my favorite rock album of all time. I have LA Woman in a number of versions, including the first pressing. This AP/QRP version smokes anything else I've heard. If it's any consolation, Mike Esposito of the In Groove and a big time fan of The Doors says the 45 rpm AP/QRP smokes anything else that has preceded it in sound quality. He says that The Doors is his favorite band. I have all of these AP/QRP 45 rpm versions of The Doors albums with Jim. The one that sounds the best in quality across the different albums to me is Morrison Hotel. 😻😻😻 LA Woman has just been released in an AP/QRP 33 1/3 rpm UHQR, so it remains to be seen how good that album is. As a huge fan of The Doors, I just had to have a 33 1/3 rpm version of LA Woman with the UHQR royal treatment. 🎤🎸🎹🥁

Hello, I'm so glad you found this older review. I notice there is a renewed activity with it. I was very impressed with this 45 and still am. So much so that while I immediately ordered the UHQR, I cancelled it the next day. I'd love to have it but just could not afford it. My friend Oz got two, and I'll get to shoot it out against the DCC, and if I must have it and it's sold out, he'll have his retail copy for me.
@audiophileman7047
@audiophileman7047 2 дня назад
@@ThePressingMatters In Chad's announcement about this UHQR, he said that the 45 rpm version sounds a bit better than the inside tracks on the 33 1/3 rpm. That may not appeal to people who love Riders on the Storm, last song on the second side of the 33 1/3 rpm version. It's a matter of what's important to you and how much you like this band, and I definitely understand about budget. I like everything else that comes with a UHQR beyond the record itself. Sometimes I don't feel like flipping the record more than once. A UHQR release doesn't just give you a great record made to the highest standards; it's a celebration of the album. 😻
@ThePressingMatters
@ThePressingMatters 2 дня назад
That's true, and I am a big fan of the series. I have nearly every one. I'm very curious to see the box quality, the jacket and to hear what Bernie did with it. I'll probably cave and get it if it's as good or better than the DCC.

Congratulations on the new turntable My origin live Calypso has speed adjustment set screws on the motor and from time to time with weather conditions and such you do have to adjust your speed control and it is especially noticeable on piano. People don't realize how important a rock solid 33 and a third is for a lifelike musical presentation. The human perception of accurate speed is uncanny. Another thing to consider is vibration control ginkgo audio makes a vibration base for your turntable I know they're expensive but something you need to consider. I got mine on sale of course.
@ThePressingMatters
@ThePressingMatters 3 дня назад
Yes some isolation solution is in the cards, though it's not an issue I notice. I wouldn't have believed how much of a difference speed stability and accuracy made until I heard the VPI with the ADS. It's something that once you've had it in the system. You don't want to be without it. It is more lifelike and unlocks the music from the record.

@@ThePressingMatters The reason I mention vibration control, it's kind of like the speed thing. when you hear it and then you hear what it's doing you can't go back. I mentioned the ginkgo audio number one because that's what I own, and Michael fremer reviewed the product years ago. He was very impressed. You might want to do some investigating into this. it's a thing for the future to consider when you want the next upgrade. That's why I mentioned it. I was on audiogone forums years ago talking to some folks about what I owned and I was thinking about doing a tone arm upgrade or maybe a cartridge. Great videos Scott- thanks! I ordered the sample packs to figure out what I need to re-sleeve what I have and look at the inner sleeve options. Question- is there any reason you can't use the 12" Dual Pocket Outer Sleeves w/ One Flap for the front side of a gatefold to avoid having the tape left on the inside? Thanks again and sorry if this is a redundent question.
@ThePressingMatters
@ThePressingMatters 3 дня назад
Hi Steve, I'm trying to picture what you mean but to get the wrap around flap (no seam) on the spine you have to do it this way. Now if the inner tape really bothers you, there is a dual pocket tape on flap sleeve. That could be used so that there is no tape strip on the inside. You should watch the follow up video - go to the end to see a demo of cutting the flap. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nGTQNbH9fCU.htmlsi=O5ONTSL2-n2BfHbp You can also NOT cut the inner flap and join the back piece flap to the tape in the inside, right across the center of the gatefold. I found this solves the tape strip being visible but creates a bunching effect. I prefer to cut off the strip with a paper cutter. You'll see in the video how that works. Personally I soon forgot about the white tape strip and don't think of it as an visual obstruction, but a nice visual feature.

Hello Scott enjoy your channel Thanks for the review. I have the rhino reissue that bettered my original Japanese press but not by much. so thanks to you I will not be purchasing the rhino Hi-Fi reissueI. did just purchase the reissue of Black Sabbath original press rhino Hi-Fi. I also purchased the bad company album going to compare that to the Kevin Gray rhino remaster of 2012, I believe. review of both records forthcoming on my channel. My older brother bought All Things Must Pass just after it came out. He was 21, I was 12 and he looked me in the eye and said George Harrison is the greatest Beatle and i believed him....Until I got into high school. It surely is the best solo effort of all The Beatles, I'll give him that. But he never got close to those heights again. Critical & Financial. Of course it was all tied in to Apple and Allen Klein. He probably never got his fair share. Poor Bugger. They all did their best work within a few years after the break up. I think it is the greatest collection of songs any of them did. Not counting the Apple Jam it's pretty tight, and of course it could have made a killer single disc. Hi Dave, When I bought most of mine they were 12.50, but that was 20 years ago. My collection was about 2,000 records at that time so you can imagine. But I used these through five moves and not only were they easy to use, they protected everything. Not a dent or crease anywhere, just perfect. So, great boxes for 5 moves, plus a second life as storage to hold my overflow today as you see in the insert pictures. I know $22 is a different story but I spent that on resleeving the records that would be in that one box! Actually more. So for me it's a worthwhile thing, but I understand the entry price seems steep.

The only drawback is that the opening for the handles has a rather sharp edge that digs into the meat of your fingers, so I wear work gloves if I need to carry the things for any distance longer than a minute.

Great suggestion, and that it fits the Kallax is smart. Price is right too! I love IKEA but the closest is a day trip.

I'm sure glad that you put this video out, Scott. As you may recall, I talked about moving. I plan on moving my record collection myself and need boxes to load on a moving truck I will drive long distance. I was just just getting ready to buy some cardboard boxes designed for vinyl records from Amazon, but now I'd really like to consider these. I'm a technical person to some extent, so I'm always interested in spec's. Would you happen to know what the weight and edge crush limits are for the Ultra Boxx? I'm using heavy duty boxes with a 75 lb weight and 45 lb edge crush limits for other things (not records) I'm packing. Are the Ultra Boxx boxes stackable and how many high does the manufacturer recommend? As always, thanks for making such really good, interesting videos! 👍👍👍

@ThePressingMatters 10 дней назад
Something to consider, because they are so great for storage after the move. They will outlast us! I will check the stats and see if I can answer your question. I seem to remember 3 high is their stated limit, but four is possible. I've done it many times for short periods Because of the vertical corrougation they are extremely strong. I'll see what I can find out.

@@ThePressingMatters Took a look at the manufacturer's website. Unfortunately, they say not to stack them more than two high. That's not going to work for me. At this price, you should be able to stack them 6 high. Put vinyl record next to a product name, and the price skyrockets. 😲 It's looking like heavy duty moving boxes will be the best, most affordable option for moving and storage.
@ThePressingMatters
@ThePressingMatters 9 дней назад
@audiophileman7047 Ok sounds like it wouldn't be for you. I'm surprised at the limit. I definitely had them 3 high at least with no sign of failure. Be sure you were not reading the cardboard version, which I imagine is weaker. I'm glad you found a solution that's better for your situation. If they are designed for records, they should be good. If you have a link I'd like to see what you are considering.

@@ThePressingMatters It was for the Ultra Boxx product at the link in your video. It was in the Q&A just below the description. I'm looking at using the U-Haul Heavy Duty Small moving box. It looks like it has the proper dimensions (12 5/8" x 12 5/8" x 16 3/8") for vinyl records, and they mention using their heavy duty boxes for vinyl elsewhere. They're $2.48 per box where I live. They're double walled and have an 80 lb weight limit and a 48 lb ECT. That's pretty tough! 💪 I could always use their medium boxes with some packing if I have to for bigger sets. I'll explore all of this some more, since I haven't actually used them before. 🤔

These boxes would be ideal for moving but they seem kind of pricey for that kind of one and done deal. I’m curious, do have records that aren’t displayed in a record shelving unit?
@ThePressingMatters
@ThePressingMatters 10 дней назад
Hi Chris, they are excellent for moving! Easy to lift, stack and are very strong. After the move you just use them for storage as you see, my collection surpassed my shelf space. So that's where they go till they are sleeved or on their way out the door. I have 2,000 on sleeves and 2000 at least in boxes.

I think so Chance! I still wince a little at the price hikes over 20 years, but at this point my connection is quite valuable and if I had to do a move, I wouldn't trust it to cardboard boxes. Even those can cost up to $10 so when you see it in the context of an investment that will outlast you, it's definitely worth considering. Add to that they are not a throw away after the move, you have the ultimate box!!

I think if people are storing these in their basement or not in humidity control environment, some can get moisture/humidity absorbing packs from Amazon to stick them inside these boxes… 🤷🏽 Safe Travels Scott!!

Good point! Although this material can't absorb water, the box itself is not waterproof, though when combined with sealable sleeves like the Vinyl Storage Solutions can keep mild humidity at bay. Your suggestion of silica gel packs is an excellent one, and added to these two tools, gives you great protection. I might order some now! Thanks!

Hi Joey, Yes, forget U Haul boxes. They will damage your collection, and forget stacking them. I've done many moves with these and they protected everything. Perfect weight to lift for most anyone, handles, lids, won't absorb moisture, won't cause foxing, and after you move you have a bunch of great boxes for your overflow.

Great video! Stereo was a major innovation in the 50's and just the experience of listening to music that was "dimensional" was a revelation. The inside sleeves of the Living Stereo records explaining the way stereo works are great. The musicians, arrangers, and recording engineers for the records you showed were top notch even though the music might have ranged from fluff to meaningful. I have two copies of the Peter Gunn record, one is an American pressing and the other is a German pressing. The two covers have different colors. I went to a used record store some years ago and the owner put about a dozen pristine classical Living Stereo records in the "free" section. I grabbed all of them and they were like new. Nothing exotic like the stuff in this video - Chicago Symphony, Rubenstein - but amazing records, wonderfully recorded (the story of the recording technique is fascinating).

Hi Frank, Thank you so much! What a great comment! I was very young during the Living Stereo era, but my parents were swept up in it with their new stereo console about 1963. I remember the Living Stereo banner and the Peter Gunn artwork, as well as the 1812 Overture by Morton Gould, the one with the striking painting on the back. My mom liked lire classics from Fiedler I loved looking at the recording information and seating charts when provided. I've always been fascinated by the classical and pop Living Stereo records. I hope you scroll back through my videos because I've done a lot of Living Stereo Classical titles, both in groups and individually. Scott, great video even though I’m a little late from when you posted this. I was able to pick up an original Monarch pressing at the Austin Record Convention this year for about 100 bucks. To me it sounds really really good. I agree that the 45 RPM is the best bang for the buck for most right now. Do you recommend the other Doors AP 45 titles for the rest of their catalog?
@ThePressingMatters
@ThePressingMatters 11 дней назад
Yes I recommend one more in particular and that's the LA Woman 45 cut by Doug Sax. It's ironic that you found this older video today because Chad just announced an LA Woman UHQR at 33.3 mastered by Bernie Grundman. I don't believe the UhQR will or is intended to top the AP 45. As it's still available new for $60, I'd say it's a much better value and excellent bang for the buck that most likely will not be topped.
