Hey I'm Paul! I'm a long distance skateboarder who helped start the small genre of "skatepacking" I'm also a world champion distance skateboarder, aspiring filmmaker, world record holder, sports science nerd, a dad, observed trials cyclist, traveller, and musician. I use this page to practice making videos as I prepare to make a self filmed and produced adventure sport film, and to leave bits of knowledge that I have learned over the years skating across countries and working with athletes.

Super nice & informative video! I'm 32, doing LDP after years of cycling and... I never experienced achilles tendon pain when longboarding (maybe beacause the max distances I do are around 50km / 30mi)... but I feel it in barefoot/drop zero shoes transitioning, when doing long walks after periods of not using zero drop shoes. However, I'll surly incorporate exposive excercise in my training to become faster, even rope skipping, I'm almost not doing it since years! while I was more familiar with rises and drops 😁
Best advice i have seen online. Belray also have some very good waterproof grease (marine quality). It is also kind of thin in comparison to some other high pressure greases. The stuff for the edges of the board is good to know! I use shoe goo and if it is the same without the stickyness then it is a high quality bumper/ waterproofing for the edges👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you! I'll need to look into the belay grease. Seamgrip +Sil is basically a super low viscosity shoe goo and it is much less grippy due to the silicone. I would imagine mineral oil might work well too. Lots of stuff to try!
Hey Paul, thoughts on using mineral oil for the sidewalls? Of course it wouldn't last as long as grease but would it be safe, similar to applying on a cutting board? Thanks and great video! Are you planning to release a video on your Alaska trip?

@@0rdsec I haven't spent as much time on them but for pure pushing I think they may be one of the best. they feel like smaller wheels because they are so light, but they have more feed back because they don't have a ton a urethan, yet the larg diameter for the weight doesn't make it harsh. they are really weird. Much more grippy than you would think they would be. I do prefer the feel of the hokus a little, but I would rather the smaller size since I run my setups pretty tight (axle to foot platform) and it doesn't afford a lot of room.

I'm really enjoying the Karmas and I agree with what you said about their being very grippy - I'm still very much a noob and I'm afraid of going downhill, but these make me feel really stable while carving and I feel like I can manage more speed just because I feel more in charge. Actually looking at a Hoku setup as well (likely the Supersonic) - just have to sell my eboard first, I'm a lot more into pushing :)
@@0rdsec yeah I recently set some hokus on one of the bamboo super Sonics, I think I have riptide crank bushings in the rear and soft seismic ones up front) on bear trucks and it's so comfy and fast.
Food safe wax (bees wax) works wonders on waterproofing maple boards (heat can help from next to a heater/fire if vigorous rubbing isn't your thing). In the field you can use skate wax to rub down any wear spots to keep the weather out. You can buy grease packed bearings cheap, and they work better for all weather (for non-extreme use) than the modern speed cream and magic oil stuff, but they won't "spin forever". There are even high-end versions like Sano that most shops seem to have.
I only have a combo of beeswax and coconut oil that I mixed together into chapstick tubes and was hesitant to use that since coconut oil can go rancid. I instead put some mineral oil along the sidewalls of my Trip. Now I'm worried this might affect the wood glue, do you have any idea if it's safe to use?
A goodl video. I'd call this more of a caveman variation rather than a fastplant because, historically, a fastplant leaves the front foot on the board while grabbing with the back hand like a frontside air. I used to ollie into them back in the day.

I'd like to think I'd be able to to do this some day, but for now I just like listening to Paul explain it. People should take notes on his style of teaching because I do not feel looked down upon whatsoever even when I dozen off and got distracted by the squirrel Paul didn't put me down.
⚠️ It's not called a fastplant. Luckily the best way to find out the true answer to a question on the internet is to post the incorrect answer and wait for the replies! .... Sooo after some consultation the closest thing I have to a proper name for this move is "almost a flat land bean-plant, but with one too many steps". Or maybe it's just a variant of "running for the bus" Feel free to reply to this to continue the debate below!
Potentially for a few reasons. One is that the core is closer to the inside edge. But my thinking was I wanted it to roll as well as possible on pavement also, so I figured more flex would help with that. I did accidentally stud the inside lip of one of the wheels though. 🤦 I placed the wheel in the rear so it would return to center easier. The studs penetrate more the more it slides. So when you begin to slide the resistance increases. It's tricky to get used to.
It's the board that had me switch from my previous partner Rayne. (I still ride loaded boards too). I hope you are enjoying them. I'm glad I was able to help.
I used this on my Penny Nickel board and it's working well. I added grip tape, 1/8th inch rubber risers, and larger wheels. I've ridden through plenty of rain a few puddles that submerge the bearings. A couple weeks later the wheels are still spinning smoothly. My next step is to waterproof my G-Bomb deck with the silicone sealant.
Heck yeah. Ireland is a perfect spot to test this method for sure. Thank you for the feedback! I find it can loosen up a tad as well once the grease settles. It also will heat up and act more fluid when going fast too. Good luck!
Hey Paul, I’m from Fairbanks, and I’ve been planning a longboard trip down the Alcan for a couple months. I can’t believe I found someone online who already did lmao. I was wondering; about how many miles were you able to cover in a day?
Oh wow! Yeah. Maybe you should message me on instagram @paskapookid and I can speak to you about it in depth. I believe I averaged 73 miles per day, but that includes days in town. It does not include my (single) day off. (That puts me at 70.5 miles per day) I would try to do 100 miles or slightly more if I was skating a full day. 22 days (I took one complete day off because I got water in my hard drive and all my camera gear).
Simple things like wear gloves... (while packing grease) so wrong man... what are you teaching people?... you get like 1 ride in water without good marine grease and your bearings will stick...if you get the water out by using displacement from grease to get it out your bearings should work until the balls themselves start to firm micro holes... or pin holes... at which you can just replace the balls or until the walls of the inner channels start to form groove lines... then you need new housings!!! Kinda like an engine rod bearing!!! Only smaller... just keep grease in your bearings and then eventually replace them, you can take all these precautions but really it's only a small extra amount of life for something not that expensive!!!
Sorry I don't understand. It sounds like you are arguing for the use of marine grease. I agree, people should wear gloves. The grease can't really wash off 😂 . But you know how mechanics are with the stuff. I understand it's not that toxic when it's new. Like motor oil it's not toxic until it gets contaminated. The gas on the other hand should be avoided. The benzene in the gas will make the air in your home a carcinogen. As for the rest of what you wrote, I don't try to remove water. The grease, if applied to un-lubricated steel creates a film that prevents water from contacting the steel. I don't change the lubrication. But you can add marine grease to a lubricated bearing and expect it to work. I honestly do this one time and ride my bearings for years without re-applying lubricant. Then I replace the bearings. But some may want to refresh their bearings. My system has been tested and been through some of the worst conditions anyone has subjected their bearings to. I apologize if that's not what you are trying to say. I figure I may be way off mark.
Oh I think I get what you are saying. Yeah displacement can prolong the life of your bearings without having to do this crazy method. But I won't carry the extra grease on my extended trips. All the little things add up and my pack will get too heavy.
@PaulKentSkates no yeah mostly you got what I was saying... the water thing was mostly for the people asking you about how you keep your bearings good...
And yeah as long as they are greased it should last quite a long time... don't carry it with you, mostly my point was if your bearings stick usually they just need to be greased...I just didn't think the whole washing process was necessary and the way you did it in the video was a little unorthodox and possibly counter intuitive...
@@rkaidag74 it's the method used to wax chains for cycling. The goal was the same with marine style grease as it is with paraffin, to achieve a tenacious thin molecular bond to the lubricant. Many degreasers leave a film that prevents this bond from setting. Again I took it from my cycling hobby. But I don't like using gas as I figure it can age the retainers the same as propellant wd40. I do appreciate you taking the time to comment. I just made a "what I'm doing right now video based on what I've done that works." But having people with more technical know-how or differing experience helps me think through so I can better advise people in the future. Maybe I can find better degreasers that can do a much better job too and be safer.
So not bad of a video but by the time he's packing grease I was at cringe...a couple things wrong here... first children need adult supervision, second even you shouldn't be in a room like that with so many chemicals evaporating into the air without a better circulation and a respirator or some sort of mask...personally I suggest doing that outside without a mask or if inside wear a respirator....I did like the blow dryer grip tape remover joke though.... lol funny tech joke.... anyway... there is a better way to pack your bearings and you shouldn't use your hands, lastly I almost never have to do all that nonsense... just take a table and a piece of paper pack your bearings with grease by pressing the bearing into grease on the paper... you only need to clean them like that after you apply and the grease has been washed off after a ride or 2 in water/mud... but that's a huge waste of time...I get multiple rides out of any good bearings unless I go through water... and well marine grease would be the awnser I use it on all kinds of rc boat motor parts and well none of that is needed!!!
Correct children need adult supervision it didn't occur to me to recommend that since the people doing long distance skating are all adults and I didn't figure this video would spill over to the general population. I also may have forgotten that not everyone knows how stupid I'm being and may miss much of what I though was hillarious. I agree with you, the gas is super terrible for you and super dangerous. Even isopropyl alcohol can be super bad if you inhale too much (as you know). I should have considered mentioning these great points. And that the only reason I did it inside was for the camera. I think I forgot that many people may miss the implication that I am being a complete idiot for using gas and doing this indoors. I actually have footage I can use of another time I used isopropyl and I got a headache, while outside. That could be a decent PSA. This video is part stupid, but also I'm prepping for crazy extreme situations. I will travel thousands of kilometers across remote areas with only 1 or 2 spare (individual) bearings, as I carry all my equipment in a backpack. I deal with a ton of rain and can't dry the board before going to sleep. Often towns along my route use a lot of salt, in the winter. I have even skated roads in the winter or on a wet salt flat. Thank you for the feedback. I completely agree. And I will post this so people see it until I get organized to make a proper video.
@PaulKentSkates and yeah np bud... figured I would try to let you know how I felt at least... so many kids watch RU-vid and ask silly questions about stuff like skating and bearings because you know they are kids and don't know lol....
