What happens when you strip away most of the comforts of modern living, and instead choose to rebuild how you want to live from scratch? Chad moves from a comfortable condo in Portland, Oregon to ten acres of raw land in western Maine, with only a passing knowledge of how to homestead. Think of it like a midlife crisis as an art project.
My abysmal batting average of presence when doing a project is somewhere in the range of 10-30, so if you're at 200-300, I think you're doing really well.
Translation: Hello. I am also trying to make a structure from such arches. There is a problem. If there is even a small knot on the rail, the rail breaks. How did you solve this problem? Yes, this is indeed a challenge! I broke a few arches when bending them, too, this is actually to be expected. I don't think it's a good idea to reinforce the wood for the arch, as this will probably compromise the arch. My strategy was to try and find the wood in bundles that had the least amount of knots, buy more than needed, and only use the very best pieces of wood for the arches. The pieces with knots, save those for the horizontal and diagonal bracing, because those pieces you can reinforce if you need to. Good luck!
love your work ethic, but seem to work hard. what IBC totes metal frames open at the front you should be able to get these cheap. The music is mind numbing I like the talk no music.
Yep, the episodes after this one I do use IBC totes, and I was able to find them reasonably cheap used. Sorry you don't like the music, it's part of the gig for putting together these videos!
I'm sure your music story would explain it., 👍 a stationery excavator makes a good winch or crane. Stick with it, nature is a greedy mistress. Take care my friend.
If you get an old hot water heater paint it black leave it in the sun, 12v (very minimal power requirements) air pump to pressurize it. I used a pump from an old volkswagon camper van, then you can pump that water through an actual shower head and have a normal outdoor/indoor shower. I actually got two low flow shower heads and it was enough to pump them at the same time. I like being enveloped in the water when its cold out... plus you can invite someone to shower at the same time. Before I got the 12v pump I made a chamber out of pvc and used a bike pump to pressurize the tank. It would take 30 pump to get a decent shower. One other not is the tank was elevated by about 10 ft in relation to the shower that was 50 ft away from it. I like your commitment to this endeavor you are on. Spending that much time alone can be healthy and tough because no one around to project on. What keeps you from getting someone to share in your off grid life? Seems like it would be nice to have some help. This movement of returning back to homestead life it growing and there are lots of women who would enjoy living this way. I know that comes with a different set of difficulty but its a tradeoff that might help those cold Maine nights.
Thanks for the tips on shower enhancements. Believe it or not, I actually thrive on the cold outdoor showers, I do it all through the winter. The indoor shower is really in case I have company ;) Speaking of company, yes, I would enjoy having a partner out here now. It was important for me to do the first bit myself, but now it would be great to share the experience with someone. I'm dating, but haven't found that right person yet!
Tanslation: Unfortunately, I don’t understand why there are so many 1000 liter containers. But I think I’ll see in the future. I thought I mentioned it somewhere in the series, but to clarify: cut firewood takes time to season before it's ready to be burned -- about half of the containers will contain freshly cut wood, still in the seasoning process, and the other half will contain wood that has already seasoned from previous years. And if I accidentally bought too many, they will be easy to re-sell ;)
Translation: Unfortunately, I don't understand spoken English very well. Or rather, I don’t understand it at all. I haven't used it since graduating from the academy 15 years ago. And as a result, I stopped understanding. Are you able to use the 'Transcript' feature of RU-vid? I'm not sure if it would translate to your language directly, but if not, you could take the English and use translate.google.com to perform the translation for you.
Partial translation: Good morning, I would like to know. How did you treat the wooden arches themselves against rot or did you not treat them with anything? I did not treat the arches themselves at all, they have no contact with the ground, and the moisture is low in the shed because I keep it open most of the time. I did stain the bottom seals, since they are close to the ground, and the stakes that hold the frame to the ground are pressure-treated wood, which should prevent rot.
Translation: In winter, does the snow slide off the greenhouse on its own or does it have to be brushed off? Great question! Sometimes it sticks at the very top, and a simple bump on the inside of the plastic shakes it off. That might not even be necessary, but I've been pretty conservative about snow pileup on my buildings, because the last thing I want is for them to collapse!
Agreed but if you built wood raised beds they could sit inside to keep the wood from rotting. Just cut very bottom out. I would look nice too. @@lifetolive_one
Hi Chad! Nice to see you hard at work. I like your definition of systems; I first heard of systems in psychology as “a collection of coping behaviors that help reduce chaos for an individual” and realize this can be done for personal DIY projects as well. Chaos reduction is my #1 goal for this year… obviously as you said chaos is inevitable and we can never get it down to 0, but I’d at least like to reduce it.
Loving this! Caepenter joiner from the uk, spent my whole career doing things on my own you really needed 2 or 3 blokes for so totally feeling you! nothing beats the satisfaction! Got my sub!
I write and record my own music for the videos. That piece at 7 minutes is one of the more unusual ones I've written. It's a Kala Ubass, finger snaps, and thigh slaps.
Translation: 👍Congratulations on getting closer to Nature!! Let's watch how the System will destroy itself when those with Consciousness and Abilities leave it🫣 Be Kind, Chad✊️ I worry about this, too. I would not want to go back to the days of the caveman, modern life has solved so many issues, but I don't believe we have collectively paid enough attention to what this easier lifestyle is costing us.
Translation: 3:36 You are the first to build a gothic survival arch with such a Philosophy. In 1965, I lit the stove and carried buckets from the well. Composting and powder/filled toilets are more familiar to me than the “conveniences of civilization.” I can't claim to be the first, because I used plans from bow-roof-shed.com ;) However, there aren't many RU-vid videos showing the construction, that's for sure. Sounds like you know how to survive without modern conveniences -- kudos!
You can find the plans here: bow-roof-shed.com They're pretty good, I had to figure out the end caps myself, otherwise I just followed the instructions.
Your level of introspection can only come from a software developer. I used to work at blackberry. I remember spending months making a date picker control that was then never used. Talk about thinking what using your time valuably means.... When I turned 50 I bought land and am almost done my 1.5 story cabin. Feels so good to use my HANDS to make something I can see. My rule is I do it all myself. I had to pay somone to do the culvert becasue the towhship didn't allow diy. Everything else I've done by myself. I've brought every 2x4 in my truck and carried every piece by hand to the build sight.
I also enjoy working with my hands and seeing the results, obviously ;) Sounds like you have a nice setup there! I also still like programming, though, just gotta balance it with other stuff that's not so heady.
Just found your channel and I've gone through all your bow roof construction videos. I think you've done one of the best jobs covering your construction. Subscribed!
