First and foremost I love action games with lots of depth and room to break down their combat systems to see what parts work the best and why. That's the bread and butter of what I do here! But don't be surprised when we upload videos on JRPGs, platformers, first person shooters, and even movies! If that sounds like it's up your alley, then I welcome you to sample some of our content!

I agree with a lot and disagree with a lot. I love Sekiro but I don't think it is devoid of all the ways to avoid danger you talked about. You can use stealth and then running to take out swarms of enemies. You can even use stealth for bosses in Sekiro, something you can't do for any other Souls game. You talk like it's a knock on souls bc you just use that little circle button for everything. Well Sekiro substitutes circle for the L1 button; rinse and repeat. You make it sound like the combat in Sekiro is so much deeper than souls; I genuinely don't see it. The style of fighting in Sekiro is different than Souls, but within Elden Ring and within Sekiro, I don't see Sekiro as this multi-varied encyclopedia of fighting styles. I think there's much more variety in Elden ring bc of things like spirit ashes, weapon arts (which you just flat out asserted we don't get to count, which is absurd), and the variety of different character play styles and weapon types. In Sekiro, you get one weapon, and then a TON of useless skill trees. I used Ichimoji double and Whirlwind slash a few times (things similar to weapon arts which you said we don't get to use, so I can just say you can't use these right?) but there are entire trees that were totally useless. The prosthetics were cool but nothing major in terms of winning most boss battles. Good luck using your axe against Isshin Ashina, or your firecrackers against the Headless. Actually, going back to your "Souls are easy compared to Sekiro" point, some of the proesthetics seem to only exist to gimmick certain bosses. So put another check in the column of "ways Sekiro lets you circumnavigate difficulty": they do it by giving you gimmick prosthetics that only exist for specific bosses. I find your points in this video all over the map
Boomer shooters is just a modern way of saying arena shooter or doom clones as they were originally known. Arena shooters were the original type of shooter, and halo just shares a lot of the fundamentals aside from the standard fast movement the games are known for. If you look at any fighting area of a doom game, they are typically big nonsensical arenas meant to be good for gameplay rather than realism.
The combat system is not too hard, it just lacks player agency. Let me explain. In a perfect duel, both fighters would go back and forth at each other, they'd obviously each have their own strengths and weaknesses, but overall they try to control the fight in a way that favors their strengths. See most irl fights like UFC or boxing matches. Now, to extend on that idea of back and forth, it means each fighter has the ability to win the fight in both attacking or defending stance. Some may be stronger in defense (Jujitsu/wrestlers), others maybe better offense (boxers/muay thai), but the idea is their opponent need to pay as much attention (respect) when attacking and/or defending. To give weighted distribution to the duel analogy, the two fighters would have an "importance ratio" of 1:1, meaning they are evenly matched, or in terms of percentage it'd be 50-50 split in terms of power. Now, what this translates into gaming is that a perfect fight is both the player and the boss going back and forth, each taking turns attacking and defending. This is essential and is largely missing in Sekiro. In Sekiro, players MUST respect the enemy's moves, especially bosses. Bosses will almost always outrange and outdamage the players, and more importantly, their attack animation is faster, meaning if we try to attack just face to face, they can hit us faster despite starting later. In this game, we are always on the weak side... And the power balance is more closer to 10-90, the 10 being Sekiro. There's not much back and forth, more like back back back back... And back a few more times before we can do a single forth. This system creates a game that feel frustrating to play, because our attacks are weak and slow, and our stronger attacks all consume resources, while the bosses can deal death blows after death blows. The duel is not a dance, it's a game of chicken, basically, deflect and maybe poke. If someone likes this, this is great. But if they want a bit more control of the flow of the battle... Well they can use combat arts and items to help but they won't do much to turn the tide of the battle. Point is, Sekiro is an ultra-tuned game for a very specific playstyle. If the player like that, great. If not, it's suffering. Personally I prefer a combat style closer to 50-50, even 30:70 is fine to me. But Sekiro is so weak that I can't enjoy controlling the character. In contrast, the recent AC6 (or any AC games since I've played all of them) is very close to 50-50, where we have the power to destroy bosses as much as they can destroy us. Even most Soulsborne games are very close to 30:70 on most builds, and for casters it can even be 70:30. I still like Sekiro more than most games out there, but the combat system feels miserable to play for someone who prefers to go on aggression.
Sekiro video. But. Actually. Super relevant. The Elden Ring Reforged mod replaces backsteps with a duck, and you can sekiro block with any weapon. Also light load = bloodborne dodge
After 5 years i finally beat Isshin, the Sword Saint. Ofc it was an on and off try and loose type of situation, even didnt play or tryd for over 6 months. Yesterday i killed him on my first try. Never got this kinda feeling in any Soulsgames ever. Really love Sekiro combat but the last boss was just a fucked up " i dont know how we can piss of the costumer so we just make last boss unreasonable hard/unfair/notfun" type of boss. Still, Sekiro is my Soulsgame to go :D
i bought it on PC but haven't played Legends because of the need for a PSN account. But if this mode is fleshed out more.. it can compete against Nioh 2
Sekiro is waaaay easier than people talk about it. It has the most transparent combat system I've ever seen in souls-like games if u paying attention. All attacks r pretty well telegraphed and unblockable ones has actual reasons behind it - u can't block low horizontal swipe (jump), grab (obviously) or thrust (mikiri/precise parry). Same as lighting - u touched the ground u'll get the charge (is how electricity works). Everything else is just watching and feeling combat flow. Every other attack can be blocked. I mean EVERY attack. Even a freaking bullet or fist of a giant monkey. The only bnllsh!t boss in there is the demon of hatred cuz he completely ignores core game mechanic. U need to dodge him cuz parrying bites u in the ass. Aside from that - beautiful game and one of my favourite by far.
Legends has the potential to be a standalone game, tbh. But it'd also need to compromise with being a live service game and I think a lot of people would hate that
Every FromSoft game has an inherent easy mode. It’s playing the game. Maybe you’ll die a lot but eventually you’ll just get used to the enemy’s attack patterns and once the enemy becomes predictable it becomes much easier.
A shame Legends will probably never get the kickstart it needs for new content. With it's sale still being restricted in around 180 regions since the Sony incident, the new playerbase is gonna be severely limited. Which sucks, because at the very least we're owed some new legendary gear or perks. Or maybe some more masks so that %95 of the Ronin class doesn't depend on you buying directors cut.
The problem, as I see it, is what people mean by "skill". Skill in this situation basically means MEMORIZATION. So, when you say "putting in the work", the "work" is essentially just taking the time to memorize enemy patterns, and react accordingly. With a game like Sekiro, this aspect is turned up to 11, to the point where it's what I call Reactionary Pictionary. Not being enamored with extreme Reactionary Pictionary, is usually not a "skill" issue. It's a "I find that ish boring AF" issue. Please understand, I love ER and BB, so I'm not a hater. I'm playing through Sekiro atm, and I am honestly starting to get bored (but I am enjoying to a point). You're Gamer d!ck isn't bigger just because you enjoy the slog of Reactionary Pictionary. You simply have different tastes. IMHO, the vast majority of gamers could master Sekiro, IF they wanted to. The reason they don't, is because they honestly just find it boring. IF you want to feel more like a man, get your azz to the gym. You ain't getting laid because you enjoy, and are good at, Extreme Rote Memorization: The Game.
I disagree, I’ve played Elden ring RL1 and I’m currently at the end of my first Sekiro playthrough and it never felt like a game of memorisation, Elden ring and the souls games definitely are. The overcommitment to all actions and the heavy delays means you NEED to learn the enemy movements and your own. Sekiro’s combat is highly reactive and responsive, most of the bosses I’ve beaten first try and the others I just needed to calm down and make better reads, hasn’t felt like a memorisation game at all, it feels much more like a flowing rhythm game if anything and that’s just the pacing component. Outside of the lack of equipment and classes it feels much more freeing than the other souls games (not that it is one) and I think it’s great
@@sinelacico823 You sir, are the extreme exception. The VAST majority of even hardcore gamers found Sekiro to be obnoxiusly difficult. Mainly I believe, for the reasons I listed. My reflexes are fine, it's memorizing the patterns, so I react perfectly, each time, that's the problem. Memorization. Just because you're a genetic freak, doesn't mean the rule doesn't exist, Mr. IBeatMostBossesFirstTry 🙄
as someone who beat the game you are absolutely right its not hard just annoying, i hate when a game tries to force me to engage with a mechanic, its whether i can do it it more of why should i when there are more fun things to do.
@@OYME13 hahaha well some of the harder ones took me quite a few now that I’ve finished the game, but I still don’t feel like it’s much of a memorisation game. I beat Isshin earlier today and being aware of the mechanics and understanding your opponent to at least a basic degree can take you far. Just train a little with the basic goon enemies and the undying, look up frame timing for your deflections. It’s not much of an effort and knowing how the game functions behind the hood helps a lot.
I’m glad I didn’t see the OG review of this game mode lol. I would’ve been so salty if marvels avengers (a total failure of the looter shooter genre) was the only comparison you had to make. Anyway, this looks amazing and I plan on poking and yelling at my homie when I get out of work to grab a copy of this on pc.
As a person who beat and platinumed Elden ring before even buying sekiro. I beat gyoubu without parrying a single attack because, that what I did in Elden ring, but when I first fought genichiro the combat finally clicked and it actually wasn’t that bad.
Oh no no no, don’t blame the game with the lightning either😂 the room right before genichiro has a poster on the wall that tells you that you’re able to reflect it
I know I’m late but I couldn’t for the life of me beat Genichiro but once I bought it on steamdeck I beat him on my second try.. I think using a wireless Xbox controller really makes this game more difficult especially in the early game.
Lmfao... I just got Sekiro. I was able to beat all the aouls games.np first time thru. This game tho... Hy crap! Yes. It is hard. But i feel.like afro samurai when i do things right. And im slowly getting better. I got to lady butterfly and lost and now just got to the guy on the horse i.think, it i gatta hit the hay. If you like samurai champloo or afro samurai and ur rdy to get ur facw stomped for a bit... This game is amazing.
I'm glad that Sekiro is my first FromSoft's game because I don't think I would like it as much if I started with a different game like Dark Souls or Elden Ring for the same reasons you and the people you've interviewed said
Tbh i'd love legends to get the destiny level of support (without the scummy pricing for dlcs) cause it definitely could garner a huge fanbase if it wasn't so short
