Was sailing on a schooner and this little sailboat would come so close to go in our wake. We did not appreciate the little seperation; but I guess since you were both coast guard both vessels knew what was the intention

I got to see this ship by walking past the Seaspan yard in a local park, the day before the naming ceremony. Pretty big, but the ship next to it in the dock was even bigger.

Hunting whales in Canada should and will be again illegal. The name of this diesel powered antiquated ship should be a reflection of all Canadians, a name everyone can pronounce and NOT a small highly subsidized special interest group in the middle of butt fk nowhere. My tax dollars ill-spent again !

Building cost overruns, probably not on time, diesel powered polluters, no guns and look at those 212 helicopters on the virtual deck. More garbage expenditures from a failing government, Liberals and Conservatives ! This country is really beginning to suck. And No l won’t leave it. Canadians need a new political party and real leadership

Neat ships. FYI, it’s considered polite to link to sources. A lot of us would like further information on the ships.

@@tonyt8950 The ships have a Wikipedia page. I shouldn’t have to go search Wiki to get basic information on what is planned.

I'm glad to see Canada 🇨🇦 getting some new vessels. Now they just need to rebuild their Navy, and they'll be set. Unless a current Prime Minister happens to cancel the funding. 😤😤

In the merchant marine, the Chief Mate, although being the Safety Officer, designates the 3rd Mate as the Safety Representative, who's duties are to check all life-saving & fire-fighting equipment, and as well, give shipboard familiarization tours to new crewmembers. Should the 3rd Mate be unsure of an item or procedure or otherwise, he/she then would seek guidance from the Chief Mate. The Chief Mate's primary duties are cargo - load/unload planning (including the sequence of de-ballasting & ballasting), in charge of the actual load/unload process, on-board maintenance duties for the deck crew, deck inventory checks and ordering, and along with those mentioned, the standing of a watch (usually the 4-8 watch). The fundamental difference between the CG and the merchant marine, is that our raison d'etre, is the carriage of cargo.

My sea going career as a Marine Engineer was through the 70's and 80's. For the most part the engineering spaces was the charge of the 2nd/1st Engineer; while the Chief Engineer was in overall charge of the whole vessel engineering wise. Some would join the engineering team at morning coffee break for a daily meet up (especially when the Machinery space ran unmanned at night deep sea); others would tour the engineering space with the senior watchkeeper. It was rare for the C/Eng to been in the machinery spaces unaccompanied.

If more young Canadians would have a clue, they would / should be taking the marine engineering program - whether at the CG college or any of the few others offered at community colleges across the country. The opportunities - both at sea and ashore are truly unlimited!
