This is very helpful for me. I live in Texas, so I have to rely on roller skiing for training pretty much all year, except for a small number of days in the winter when I can travel north to ski. Thank you!

Looks like a good test protocol overall and superior in many respects to what I've done in the past. However, don't you find that clamping on something with the teeth creates tension, distraction, and uses muscles that one wouldn't normally use, no matter how seemingly slight? Also, my experience in labs is that the testers want to attach HR chest straps way too tight in their efforts to avoid errors which (for me at least) make me feel as if I can't breathe and actually causes chest cramping. I prefer using my own strap and syncing it with the tester's electronics. Do you not do simultaneous lactate testing? It seems not.

Hi there, In our test, athletes can choose to wear a personal HR chest strap. We don’t do simultaneous lactate. We can pull heart rate intensity zones just as easily if not more accurately than stepping off the treadmill for a lactate, dropping effort, and then getting back to speed. A sustained stress load gives us a cleaner look at a steady ramp up to max, in a timeframe that yields really clear data and enough time in the spectrum of energy use, but is still short enough (~15 min) to yield close to a max VO2 value at the end.

I need you as my instructor. I’ve hit a plateau (and not a very high one). I can only get so much from watching videos. I would love to have a real person pointing out my faults. Do you ever give clinics in South Carolina?

Hi there! We have availability for one-on-one coaching in Madison, WI, and Minneapolis, MN. Unfortunately, South Carolina is out of our service range.

Wow! Well done! Looking at those students I wonder if making them work on their balance on one ski would help them in keeping their forward hip position. They have a tendancy of always keeping both skis on the snow which keep bringing their hip back. Thank you for sharing you are an amazing teacher so intentionate to your students.

I'd also try using the arms like you would with poles in your hands to work on keeping the pelvic area, belly button forward and a straighter body over the balls of your feet. Pretend you have a string attached to the top of your head pulling you up...

This video needs to be remade. Not well thought out on USSA performance triangle and PSIA 3 skills of continous forward motion. Push-off, weight transfer and balance are first skills to teach before hip rotation of of ski that you transfer your weight on to for the balance and glide. From what l see of the students many do not have the basics down.

Today a gym instructor who never saw enough snow and surely didn’t do a cross country skiing told me that I do it wrong and then showed me the “correct” way with a lot of squatting and bending. 😄 so, I decided to find a RU-vid video uploaded by skiers just to double check if my technique became so bad and I forgot how to ski. Apparently I still have it and do it right. I miss the snow though. Cheers from Scotland!

Rollerskiing actually works better in the winter. With a dusting of snow, you have to actually kick with technique and sometimes even herringbone.

Short on time, what about Short on Energy? How do you train best if you're already tired? Hit it hard off the blocks? Or get the "Runners High" effect going with your remaining energy, to carry you thru the focus of the day.
