Don Was Detroit All-Star Revue is an annual concert held in Detroit each July where Don and the house band perform a revue style concert with a variety of Detroit's best artists and musicians.
Thank you, Mr. Andre Williams for your art! The story of "Bacon Fat" seems to be true but not complete in "Testimony", Robbie Robertson's detailed autobiography. "Bacon Fat" was proposed by Garth Hudson to Duff Roman for recording by Levon and The Hawks on Roman records, Toronto, Canada, (1963 or 6?). Robertson rightly, IMHO, credits Garth and himself as having written "Bacon Fat". But there's this earlier "Bacon Fat", written in 1956 by Andre Williams, and recorded as a talking Blues for Fortune Records. It became a top-ten hit at that time. Now it's likely Williams' "Bacon Fat" may have been the inspiration for Garth Hudson and Robbie Robertson, who were students of the old Blues and early Rock played along the Chitlin' Circuit. But comparing the two recorded "Bacon Fat" tunes, it's clear: 1. by the different lyrics; 2. by the Hawks' organ & guitar versus Williams' sax instrumentation; 3. and by the beat; that Williams' "Bacon Fat" and the Hudson-Robertson "Bacon Fat" are different compositions related mainly, perhaps only, by sharing the same title. -Doug Pratt, Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

I remember Rob Gillespie playing with Rob Tyner in an iteration of the MC5 at Joey’s on Jefferson in Detroit, about 1977. He knocked me out! I’m very sorry to hear of his passing.
I just found this again. They were so good. Thanks for posting this. I'm grateful for getting to see Robert. I miss him so much. The whole band was excellent. I was fortunate to see them numerous times. They kept getting better and better.
@@petedazer3381 If you're interested there's a video about a tribute they held for Robert. It won't let me share it, but it's easy to find. Just put Robert Gillespie guitarist in and it should come up. The Channel is Man on The Street. At the end there are some clips of him playing that I had never seen. They put another video up after the tribute. Jamie the interviewer talked to many of the musicians who played that night. People had many good things to say about him.He was a kind man and people loved him. He knew he had talent but he worked hard. He knew he had a gift but never acted like it. He was humble. I know you would have liked him. Robert's old great friend, Mike Skill of the Romantics told me this after he died. "He was a shooting star." 💫✨🌟Thank you for your comment.
