The question: 'were they created by nothing or were they their own creators' is a loaded question (like the question when did you stop beating your wife), it assumes: that those who do not believe in Allah, may think that everything came from nothing and also assumes an act of creation as the only option. The better question would just be 'does the universe have a creator?' We don't know enough about the universe, and only in recent times have come to understand somethings about space and time. It can easily also be said that the universe is where the buck stops as the necessary entity. When we look at things we observe we see matter just changing form, nothing really has a beginning or end. Energy is neither created nor destroyed.
