Welcome to my channel! In 2002 I thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail from GA to ME. I started on March 24th and finished on August 31st. Back in those old days there wasn’t all this technology to record the journey. Now in my 40’s I am rediscovering backpacking and learning how to document my trips. I am planning plenty of thru-hikes in the near future and in between taking multi-day trips to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park since it is only about a 4-5 hour drive. Hoping to join the 900 miler club by hiking all the trails in the GSMNP. I will admit I am no expert at this video stuff, but enjoy learning new tricks and editing on each trip. Hope everyone enjoys these videos and they inspire people to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Happy hiking y’all!!!
@@GrrBear I do carry an EpiPen, Benadryl and other meds just in case. Having a device is more of peace of mind in case things go real bad. Take care and happy hiking!🥾
great footage! Linville Gorge looks amazing! really enjoyed the timelapse on it. also, sweet spot to camp up high… glad you and Mike get to go out there! He needs that rigor
At 40:15. Looking at senter point, old foundation there used to be storage bldg for dynamite for minning days. It was shipped over from Senter Michigan where it made for all the mines of the old days. Not any explosions or accidents ever happened there. No smoking,no metal shovels just wood ones for spark saftey
Thanks for sharing! We missed you by a couple hours in Windigo when we started our trip from West to East. We stayed at a few of the same campgrounds too. You saw more wildlife but I guarantee my son and I ate more berries!
"Windigo" - (in the folklore of some northern Algonquian peoples) a cannibalistic giant; a person who has been transformed into a monster by the consumption of human flesh.
45:40 - WOW, is that all Quaking Aspen, or were there birch mixed in there as well? No sound on Earth I love more than sitting in silence among a stand of Quaking Aspen as the wind blows through. The ultimate peace.
Great video! Definitely will be planning a trip here within the next couple years. How bad were the ticks when you folks went in early August? I imagine black flies and mosquitos were a constant nuisance? Not to focus on the negative haha, just trying to prepare mitigation strategies well in advance 😅
Mosquitos were only somewhat unbearable at Siskiwit Bay CG and some parts of the trail in wooded areas. Breeze off the lake took care of most of them. No issue with ticks. You will love it there!
What time of year did you hike segment 1? I’m assuming September …. How was the weather? Hot or mild? Muggy? Possibly planning a section 1 hike early fall this year 2023
I would bring a bug net if hiking there June-late August. Also a long sleeve shirt. The mosquitos seem to get more active at dusk, so we usually got in our tent by then to avoid them. Hope you have a great trip!
Sure is! People swim in there a bunch in hotter months. Sign next to falls states 10 people have drowned in that swimming hole due to strong currents. The hike was much needed to clear the head. Hope you’re well, friend!
**Beware*** The Government has outlawed filming in all National Parks as of Oct. '22. You must have a permit to film inside of those parks now! Be careful not to get caught if you are making money off YT with your videos!!
BUMMER! You visited Feldtmann Fire Tower where I was stationed in 1966. You failed to video my old home where I spent the best summer of my life! It is now all but abandoned.
If you need to escape society, this is the place to do it. What's great, no cell phones/computers etc. Also, amazing wilderness experience. I have never heard anyone say they didn't enjoy a hike on the Isle. Lovely video, thank you!
I am so happy I found your video. I am planning a similar thru hike with my 13 year old daughter, any “must see” spots you’d recommend? It’ll be a 5 night trip for us. Thank you for making this, a truly beautiful place and I am so excited to be going.
You will love it! There are some amazing views along the Greenstone Trail, but found most the wildlife around the lakes and campsites. Getting up early before any one else paid off with multiple moose sightings.
It’s amazing the sights you see on your adventures. I’m awestruck at the places just watching on your videos so I can imagine the feelings you and your hiking partners have being there. Enjoy and take care.
Great video, I am heading for my first trip to the Porqupine Mountains Sunday, if I see one third as much wildlife as you, it would be amazing! Thanks for sharing .
So glad you guys got to adventure there. It looked so refreshing seeing Nick in the crystal clear lake water. I know you guys enjoyed the nature and outdoors the place had to offer.
It was great sharing stories about our trips over pizza and beer at the Windigo store! Hope you make it back to the island sooner than later. Take care!
Great video! Loved the scenes! Man, I feel relaxed... loved the birdsongs and flower zooms. Exciting watching you set up camp in those gorgeous spots, even as the winds kicked up. Clocked some miles out there! Happy trails!
😂😂 looked like you did some “green screen” stuff when you walked past that giant tree. Like you had been mysteriously shrunk down by some party of dancing sorceresses 🧙♀️
Doing Section 2 later this year, Section 3 next year and so on. Will probably do a few sections at a time once finished with all the trails in the Smokies. Looking forward to exploring the MST!
Nick, nice camping trip and the water falls were cool. Just wanting to know how that raccoon tasted? I know you guys had an excellent time. Thanks for sharing your trip. Say hello to everyone and stay safe.
Thanks Dale! Ana says hi! Hope you’re enjoying the warm sun down south and glad you enjoy the videos. Take care! And the raccoon tasted like chicken. 😅
Yes. The Foothills Trail is a great and very scenic trail. It is over twice as long as Art Loeb, but the hiking is easier. Lots of nice campsites and water sources. Very well maintained and well marked. Enjoy!
Man I felt for you when you decided to go back to the truck. Tough decisions when evaluating safety vs. enjoyment. Seeing all those wooden trail signs has me planning my next trip back to GSMNP. Great vid!
Great trip- thanks for all the info! I'm from out west, and researching for a trip... would love to visit in April to see the wildflowers and amazing views. I guess it wasn't too busy when you went, any tips for getting permits and would you recommend this trail for wildflowers? Thanks :)
Thanks! You can make reservations on the GSMNP NPS website. It is $4 a night per person for backcountry campsites and shelters. Most sites are limited to 12 people. Reservations open up 30 days before your planned stay( ex. If you want to stay at LeConte Shelter on May 1st, the earliest you can reserve is April 1st). They fill up fast, so reserve early. Best chance for wildflowers is late April/early May imo. Pretty much any trail at lower elevations. Some good wildflower hikes close to Mt. LeConte are Porter’s Creek, Old Sugarlands, the Cosby and Tremont areas. Lastly, check out the $1 map for trip options( mileage, campsites/shelters, etc.) Happy hiking!
Nice one, Nick! I backpacked that loop last fall, starting out of Cades Cove. Loved all those countless bridge crossings, & I had a bear encounter (Mom & 2 Cubs) about a mile down Twentymile Trail from the AT.
I guess going from Daniel Boone to Davidson is easier direction. Pay attention to water sources and fill up when you can. Use an app like HikingProject to keep track of where you are. It is easy to lose the trail in some sections. Camp on Black Balsom Knob if you can. Water at Deep Gap shelter is in front of shelter down a trail. Piped source at Butter Gap shelter right by shelter. Enjoy and take your time!
I do not carry bear spray. Would in grizzly bear country. Have seen many black bears and you can read their body language. This little guy probably got into some people food since there were a couple closed campsites near where I saw him. He was just waiting around to see if I would leave food around. I ended up annoying him enough with a loud voice that he moved away. If you listen closely in the clip where I am showing the closed campsite with the chimney, you can hear other hikers yelling. Ended up being the same bear they were yelling at.
