A former article creator for an e-Sports team turned serial hobbyist. This is but the latest of my ventures as I cause all amount of chaos, and generally make a little bit of a fool of myself. But it's all in good fun, after all, if you can't laugh at yourself, what can you laugh at?
This channel is dedicated to my forays in gaming, I'm planning to start off simply enjoying games that I've already loved for years, maybe sharing them to people who've still yet to discover them, or serving up a big ol' slice of Nostalgia pie to those who enjoyed them alongside me.
Outside of RU-vid, I am a writer, I used to write for the Web Comic series, Guided.
The Age of Sigmar release divided a lot of the Warhammer Fantasy community in my local area. For some they were happy to see it back, but also classic fantasy players in my area weren't terribly open to it, and so it became very divisive. People always seem to love or hate it! And if they hate it, they REALLY hate it :')
Fucking FINALLY! I've tried Pop3d a bunch of times in the past fifteen years with no luck. I never had the patience to look into it, but after rebuying it on steam I thought it was about time. This video did it; everything working bloody wonderfully. Thank you so much!
Love this game, been playing it since the release, such a great multiplayer game too! Also this is a great series! Just a question, why are you not using "the click" to summon multible fireballs with the grudgebringer sword and the bright wizards spells, flaming skull!!?
in the first warhammer (shadow of the horned rat) you could take losses while chasing down fleeing units, i think that was what happened to your greatswords.
I use to play this when I was a kid, and I was addicted, little 12 year old trying to figure out the bloody balloon level and barely getting passed it and forcing my mum to win all the levels so I could play the god level. I'M SO EXCITED IT'S BACK!!!!
If you want to be finding the game, then I suggest a Tutorial Series on becoming a better player isn't for you! Perhaps you should google it instead. 🙂
Stranger things have happened, since the release of Populous on Steam all manner of people have been talking about playing it on the Steam Deck and more
You won't be able to play online with the steam version as they didn't add native multiplayer support into the release. So this is the 1.5 version which is built by Populous: Reincarnated. Which is where we play online.
I must have been playing this when I was about 7-9 years old - bringing back good memories. I could never ever get past the first level to feature the necromancer - neither could my dad.
The ice wizards is really good here. He has an ice tornado just keeps going right off the field. You don’t even have to move and just send tornado after tornado till there’s nothing left to fight
Are you serious? This is one of the easiest battles in the games. They come at you down the entire battlefield and you just shoot them to pieces. Also if you hold alt and click a magic item you can make them drop it so you can pick it up by another unit. I think it’s alt
Funny the cannon can’t move despite having wheels and the fact it must’ve been moved to the battlefield. Also you can change the formation with + and - if I remember rightly
A couple notes that might help future users: The first time I typed in !beta, I actually did not get the pop3.exe file, or the ddraw.ini file (ddraw.dll was already there, but that's not it of course). I just got updated Language Files, Skins, Populous and Matchmaker. I tried it again when I couldn't find the relevant files, and only then did it say Updating DDraw and Updating Populous 1.5, and after that I had the relevant files. When I launched pop3.exe, I did get the nicer settings and a more fluid mouse control, but the resolution options in the menu (which otherwise looks like the one in the video for 1.5) still only went up to 1280x960 (no scroll bar). What helped is putting "hardcodedResolutions=true" on a separate line in the ddraw.ini file (for the pop3 section), a suggestion I found on the Discord.
I played this game on PlayStation as a kid. Needless to say the control scheme wasn’t optimal for the platform, making an already hard game harder, but I was still captivated by it.
I return to watch this youtube series every now and again as a nice bit of nostalgia from when i played it when I was younger, though as I remember it I never did manage to make it past the Bogenhafen mission. Your commentary giving some nice background and explaining all the intricacies of the game is always so fascinating to listen to.
Thanks! I always try to do any game I play justice. People can look at old games negatively but I like to tell a bit of the story, we can often thank a predecessor for something we hold dear! I always think of Alone in the Dark inspiring Resident Evil for example
Bro dont advertise Steam. Point people towards GOG instead. Steam release of decades old game with DRM is laughable and Steam practices of making OS obsolete blocking users from accessing their games till they buy newer OS is so low of a behaviour.
I remember playing this as a kid on PS1. Finished it once but played the campaign a bit differently, my melee units were badass in the last mission cause i used alot melee fighting throughout the campaign. The only thing i remember or think i remember was the unit with haleberds/pikes ( dont know exact spelling)? I didnt see them here or did i missed them?
So it depends who you talk to, but I'll go through some common ones for ya: Priests:- This unit slows down the game dramatically, as the accepted way to kill off a tribe is with warriors, this unit, whilst easily countered on the offence is a slow, turtle unit that makes games twice as long and for many 'unfun' Swamp - A guaranteed way to kill the enemy shaman or any Fire warriors stopping your shaman, the instant kill mechanic offers no counter play. Hypnotise - will still appear on certain levels, but, typically this spell is too strong at stopping troops reaching the Shaman, and with magical shield turned off, there's no real need for it. Magical Shield - A guaranteed way to kill a shaman and win any game or make it monotonous and unfun. Both of the counters to magical shield are exceptionally more expensive AND hold less charges. What's more, we separate our troops, so you'd need up to 3 hypnos per one Magical Shield. Angel of Death: People think it's overpowered. It's not, but you know people. Invisibility - Hard to deal with your defences being circumvented, or putting the Shaman in an unreachable death scenario. Spies - Used to burn trees, this unit is exceptionally broken in certain maps, useless in others.
Loved this game, had a group online and played the multiplayer so much lol, Mortars and that Horn that made everyone run away got to a point when tnearly every unit had a horn :-). Thanks for making this, I got all the way to the end and killed Nagash and then my laptop battery ran out and I never got round to finishing it again
The games already on GoG. I wish people would stop buying games that aren't revamped and worked on for modern PC's on steam. Your money isn't going to someone who deserves it, you're only harming indie devs when their games get pushed of the newest release pages with shitty large dumps old broken back catalogue releases (not refering to the quality of the game design)
Absolutely disagree, this is my favourite game and I will spend money on as many copies as possible! The boom that the online community has seen from this has helped out the Populous Community immensely, with active players fresh faces and more discussion than ever. I would rather that than see X Simulator has released, personally. As this benefits me. Selfish? Yeah, but we're all selfish to a degree.
Hey, I followed your guide and everything works but the animations for spells and and the game itself are moving way too fast. I tried messing with the game speed with the shift + the minus button and it shows I'm already on the slowest speed. I'm almost sure it has something to do with the game trying to run at my resolution or something. I'm on a 4K tv at 1920 x 1080. Not sure if you have any ideas. I also tried reducing the frame rate in the ddraw with no effect. Any ideas?
I'd probably need some footage to see exactly how fast things are. Populous: The Beginning is an old game so even at 60 FPS the game's animations have been accelerated 2x what they're supposed to be. So I'd need to see if it's normal fast or not. You can try using your actual machine instead of the config file to limit Populous to 60 frames (or 28 if you want that original feel)
@@lovenjigaming3517 Do you all just play with it at 2x speed? It looks like it's at 2x speed and I'd prefer it would be at the original frame rate. Is there a way to tap the frame rate on it within that ddraw file? If not how do I cap it with my machine? Or maybe is there a slowdown command that goes below one within the game itself? I noticed I can speed it up but I can't slow down below one. Thank you for any help you can provide. I'm excited to play this game again.
@@lovenjigaming3517 I just noticed there's a way to mess with the settings further in the matchmaker program that I didn't see before. There's a checkbox for "high framerate". I wonder if I uncheck that if it will let me change the frame rate to 28 in the ddraw file.
@Keebler311 Well, only the animations are in 2x speed. The game is still constrained by its function which has remained unchanged. The game uses something called Game Turns, there are 12 game turns a second in which it can call code, this remains the same no matter which version you're using. So although the animations are all sped up, the entire game functions normally. Which is why/how we can play it. That's why footage will help us determine whether you're seeing the fast animations or whether your entire game is behaving faster than it should. Almost all modern graphics cards allow you to apply specific settings to the games in which you play, this can include quite strict frame limitations, which can help prevent higher end games being greedy with the frames, but might also help you in a situation like this.
@@lovenjigaming3517 That's interesting. Really good information. I'll play a couple levels and pay attention to how the game functions. I've never heard of a game structured like that. That's actually pretty cool. If I have further problems I'll upload gameplay to my channel and have ya take a look. Thanks again for being so helpful. I really appreciate it and the video. I can't wait to relive my childhood with this.
Thank you. After 25 years, the game still rocks! I checked the language options and i don't see Japanese ( 日本語 ). Is that possible to play, on that language too?
Not that I know of. There are opportunities to add additional languages if we have the resources to do so. Our only Japanese player is Tsuyoshi, and I believe he runs the game in English, unfortunately.
@@lovenjigaming3517 Understandable. Otherwise, it'll be great to see that language too. Since the Japanese version for PS1 and PC version named ポピュラス ザ・ビギニング also exist.
The last thing I expected to find when I looked for "Dark Colony" was a twink wolf boy talking about it. Very interesting channel you got here, Lovenji. Gonna give it a sub and watch some more of your videos. :3
Thank you! Hah, I don't use that model much since it doesn't really work all that well. You've gotta really like Populous to follow me for too long though :P
New PC versions of 1, 2 and 3 were recently released. But is it worth it? Ok, it will be able to run on newer Windows, but what about multiplayer, which at the time was a dial-up modem, has been updated for Internet connection? There's even a 60% discount for a limited time.
Well this guide sets you up to be able to play online with Pop:Re's matchmaker. Sadly they didn't add any in game multiplayer support, but this version will work online
Yeah, that's been the case for a lot of us at Populous Reincarnated too, we already owned the game, but we have to boost those sale stats! I've actually been using my copy a lot lately though...
Thanks Sven! We do our best to things going, be it with tournament ideas, helping one another out, or custom campaigns! We're always trying to do something to stop this game dying ^^
