Nice scenic trip. I've fished Redmon Dam area for most of my life. Very familiar with it, but it's pronounced " Bar-Nard", not "Ber-nerd."

Are there public parking spots at the Hwy 281 takeout point? We need a shuttle taking us back to Nichol's Landing.

Hello, Did that paddle quite a while ago while visiting the area so do not remember. We used Guadalupe Canoe Livery right at Rt 281 to take us up stream. Suggest you contact them to ask if there is any public parking at the bridge or they might let you park at their place for a small fee. Hope you get to do the paddle. It was fun!

Great vid, thanks for sharing. Do you think you could launch a 13 ft raft at the put-in at Redmond? Hard to tell just looking at aerial imagery. Thanks!
@GoOutsidePlay
@GoOutsidePlay Год назад
Hello Daniel. It has been a long time since I did that run and have only done it once so do not remember anything about the put in. I would think there is plenty of room to launch your raft but to be sure you might want to go have a look. Also recommend you check the water levels before you go to make sure it is not too low or high for a good trip. Happy paddling. Go outside & play!

Best ride is staying to the left on the river. I live close to the Hiwassee. We love that river. What’s fun is to pick spots on the river to set up and play dueling banjos all day to the out of town kayakers. Some actually speed up without looking to the side where the music is coming from. Lol.

If on a guided raft trip you will be fine. If kayaking make sure you know what you are getting into...this is a dam release river. If you are a novice don't do it. :)

@GoOutsidePlay

This river is only paddleable when there is the right amount of water.... Usually in the Spring after heavy rain. Check the USGS gauge. You can put in further up river but I know of one group that did and they found lots of downed trees. I don't know about after where we took out but as you can see there is a dangerous spillway there. The Swannanoa dumps into the French Broad and I do know there is a dam to portage around in order to go further towards Marshall. Hope that helps.

These are not turbines. These are the spillway gates that are open. Simply letting lake water down the chutes. No generation there. The turbines are inside the dam. When the big gantry crane moves across the dam and lifts the internal metal doors that are in those arch looking caves at the bottom left at Wilbur, thats when they're generating.

@GoOutsidePlay

Actual time on the water.... About 5 hours but we stopped twice for breaks and were not going very fast. All depends on stops, paddling speed and water flow. :)

Thanks. We decided not to go further downstream as we were advised a waterfall below FM 311 now has steel rebar in the chute you have to go thru so you have to portage/drag around it. We are headed to a stretch above Guadalupe State Park in a couple of days. :)
