Hi there, my name is Tom, and I'm a composer from Amsterdam, NL. Composer in Dutch is "componist," therefore... Tomponist!

I'm a 29-year-old writing music for films, games, animation and production music. I started this channel to give an insight into how things are going along the way and how I try to develop myself and my music to encourage those on a similar path. Or just to give a peek behind the curtain to whoever is interested.

I make videos about composition, orchestration, the creative process, and the ups and downs of working as a media composer.

When you recreate a Bergersen tune, you know very well that you're gonna spend the next six months to finish it. Long soundtracks are pain to recreate but paying off when done :) Working on 'Impossible' track. Wish me luck

Pretty nice, I'm a composer since my 15 YO, I do it as a hobbie, no money involved, but I'm just curious about the real orchestration. VST instruments sound amazing, however some movies or proyects want the real orchestra, is that more for a personal goal?, is there any law that says movies should play real orchestration? I know that no VST can equal a real orchestration but people can't realize it, so I wonder why directors etc want a real orchestra, because it involve spending money and time, how much does it cost a 2 minute orchestration? Or depending the orchestra they would do it voluntarily? Or each musician receive a paid separately? It is just a curiosity rolling in my head constantly.
@tomponist
@tomponist Месяц назад
Booking an orchestra for a film can get pretty expensive, which is why a lot of projects don't have the budget to do so. There's no requirement; it usually depends on what a producer or director wants and/or can afford. I do believe myself that having a real orchestra will always give a better result than writing with VST's, how good these may get in the future

Sweet bit of insight! Im not sure about the last premise thiough. I've had many a professor instruct that players will subconsciously arrive at a balanced dynamic unless indicated otherwise, even in spite of minor changes of the density of a texture. Since we work so often with samples it can be easy to assume that adding parts/doublings = higher volume when in a recording setting it's often not the case. Just a thought

Hi Tom! I wanted to ask if you learned how to conduct on your own at home? Otherwise have you attended any courses or a conducting degree?
@tomponist
@tomponist 3 месяца назад
Hi Bogdan, thanks for your comment! I learned to conduct at first by asking the conductor of the Wind Band I played in at the time (I was around 16-17) if he could teach me the basics. I wanted to learn, because I would conduct a group of players for a school project later that year. Then at conservatory, I had conducting as a side subject for about 4 years. I think learning to conduct is mostly about making music with others and gaining experience that way. You can learn the rudimentary things at home (like how to beat which time signature), but then the real learning comes from just conducting someone (this could be just one friend playing a piano; this is what most of my conducting lessons looked like).
