I work in retail and the first one I don't mind because I don't like it when I'm approached when I'm shopping because I have real bad social anxiety and that makes me nervous and uncomfortable. You have to understand there can be a reason why someone doesn't want to be approached when they're shopping.

I would say introducing other characters like mothra, king Caesar, battra, etc is go down the road of mythology. There could be another gas in the atmosphere on top of oxygene and carbone dioxyde that humans can't handle, but that the Navi need in little quantity to survive. Or, like @Nikninja said, it may be the concentration of each gaz in the atmosphere. So, yeah, it can be explain with science. ;)
