@@PinchAPennyWithJenny yeah my wife used to have a 2 hour commute to Bowling Green!! (From our old house, which was also in the area) And my kids commute to other boros for school, also 1:45 each way. That’s why we drive them to the subway. Saves them 30-45 minutes on the bus 😬 But if you can work from home, this is a great deal!

Also, in case you’re considering purchasing a coop, my little sister used to live in Mr Vernon. 1 block from the metro north. She used to commute to grand central in 30 minutes!! She bought her 1 bedroom about 10 years ago for $60k, sold a few years ago for $120k. Prices are still around $120k for a 1 bed, 600 sf -650sf. $650 a month maintenance. The area was convenient to shopping and restaurants etc, within 2 blocks. Only the supermarket was 1 mile away.

As a fellow frugal person, my philosophy is as long as it doesn’t hurt anybody else. We always pay our fair share when going out with friends. We always tip 20% unless they deserve less. We always use coupons. Always try to travel in the off season. There is no waste in our house. All food gets eaten. We never buy bottled water. We never use Uber eats. Etc etc. There are so many ways to save money. Good job showing people how!

It all balances out - if you are working from home, you buy less clothes, and have less transportation cost. Better to turn the temp up and get a small fan to circulate all the air in the room - then you don't have to wear that noisy contraption. You can probably find a used fan on Marketplace. I am in Mass. - hot and sticky this summer and I work at home 4 days a week. My electric went up $20 this month. My goal is to keep my gas and electric under $100/month and I do it by setting my Ecobee at 74 and using a small Honeywell fan from Target. Quiet and just enough to dry the air and circulate it.
@PinchAPennyWithJenny
@PinchAPennyWithJenny Месяц назад
True! I guess the extra $24 went from transportation costs to electric bill. I'd still prefer to stay under $100 like you too! 😂
@PenniestoDollars
@PenniestoDollars Месяц назад
I agree! $24 is almost a tank of gas for me.
@PinchAPennyWithJenny
@PinchAPennyWithJenny Месяц назад
And if you multiply by that by a few months, it's easily an extra $100 that can be spent elsewhere! ☺

I have two fans that I use during the summer. I got both fans for free from my job at the time. I was working at a school that didn’t have air conditioning so we had fans in all the rooms. Some of the teachers got together and wrote a grant to get air conditioning in the building; once we got that, we didn’t need the fans, so I got to take two fans home that were going to be thrown into the garbage…I’m in a studio apartment in NYC…A few years ago, I qualified to receive a free air conditioner from the city. I chose not to get one because I would have had an extra 50 dollars a month added onto my rent if I have air conditioning. We’re not charged if we have fans!
@cherylT321
@cherylT321 Месяц назад
I like the fact you have a gas stove. I’m in a studio apartment and my gas stove saved me when Hurricane Sandy hit. I was able to use a match to get the burners to light so I was able to make hot food and used the burners to keep warm…I use a cast iron frying pan for cooking most of my food in, even though I have stainless steel frying pans and pots. The cool thing about the frying pans are I ordered one during the pandemic. It came dented on one side, so they sent me another one for free, and I didn’t have to return the dented one…I also got a large stainless steel pot and some lids that fit other pots I have. The pots and lids I got for free because someone threw them out when there was absolutely nothing wrong with them!

Use fans not AC. Change your light bulbs to LED. Don't use a lot of lights and use candles or flashlights. If you use your computer you don't need your lights on. Unplug clocks and use battery operated devices. Use shades that keep the light out. if you live in a condo and pay to heat water for a shower or to wash dishes turn the hot water switch to off when done. Never keep the hot water switch going when not using water. You can get a varuety of battery operated lamps at Dollar Tree,

A hot weather tip from rural Australia... Place dark, thick blankets or sheets over those bright windows on a hot day. Why? It keeps out alot of the heat. It won't cool your house like AC but you will notice the difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures. Oh, keep those lights off too because that will create unnecessary heat indoors

I keep turning my a/c temp on the thermostat up so it clicks off. When I get too hot, I turn it back down and do that several times a day. I have a fan right next to me on the floor blowing right on me. I have a fan right next to my bed. I have an overhead fan in my living room. I try to wash in off-peak hours, and have a water saver on my shower head. I turn the hot water down when I take a shower. With all that, yes, my bill went up about $60 dollars in this hot weather. I'm in Florida, and it's been in the mid 90's with high humidity. In the winter if it's cold, I do the opposite with my thermostat. Anything to keep the unit from constantly kicking on, which draws a lot of power. I also use commercial cool cloths around my forehead, wet. They work really well at keeping the body cooler.

I understand your angst but being comfortable is worth $24 especially if you work from home. I hang emergency blankets from my curtains. They reflect the light to the outside and keep my place at least 30° cooler. I do run my air conditioner and will continue to do so because it's worth it to be comfortable.@@PinchAPennyWithJenny
