Appalshop started as a film workshop in 1969, and 50 years later we're still making films about Appalachia. We also operate a radio station, a theater, a public art gallery, a record label, a professional archive, a filmmaking institute, and a community development program - all aimed at documenting and revitalizing the traditions and creativity of the people of these mountains. We tell stories that commercial industries don’t tell. We challenge stereotypes with Appalachian voices. And we do it all with artists who are from and committed to this region. Stream one of our films, come take in a live performance, or tune into our radio station from anywhere in the world.
I have always been proud to have had Belinda as a friend. She was definitely one of a kind and an amazingly sweet and caring person. Intelligence was definitely not spared when God created this precious lady.
She was truly special in a very unique way and about as close to "Godly" as i have ever encountered in my life. That don't mean she wasn't a hellraiser and lover of life, music and party and she tackled those pursuits as fiercely as she attacked prejudice and stupidity. Most of all I am blessed to say, she was my friend.
Unions are political not truly for the men . Bin there done that . They even go as far as to tell a member who to vote for . Basically if not you get no work, they starve ya out basically.
I’m born and raised in Ohio. Literally lived in Cincinnati for 3 years and I’d like to say we do t really have much of an accent. But when I went to Red River Gorge, just 2.5 hours south of Cincy, I was utterly shocked by the accents of the locals when we would buy firewood from them. They were the nicest people and they always sold the firewood to us for dirt cheap so we’d typically give em some extra beers or smokes. They legit sounded like they were from the middle of Alabama, while just 2.5 hours north no one sounds like that.
Anyone know if the steel mill is still in Ravenswood West Virginia? Married couple could haul loads from there ( wide loads) $1,000.00 for 300 miles when I hauled out of there in the 90s.
I hauled equipment to the mine in shinnston West Virginia on a narrow road, after they unloaded me. Had to drop the trailer and a crane turned my trailer around cause there wasn’t a turn around at all…
He was my uncle and was always good to me. I didn't get see him as much I would have liked to. We had wilds time growing up in letcher County. You do what you gotta do to survive there.
Now tell me why you guys showed me when you said “dorky quiet kid” 🤔😭 No but this was a great project to be a part of and I had a really fun time! Keep up the important work! - Alaina
Most law enforcement officers are brainwashed dopes with sticks up their asses. Fair enough if a truck is 10t over weight on a set of axle groups. But if they came out tomorrow and said ohhh actually trucks can go heavier now its just as safe most sheep wouldnt even question it. Here in australia you pay the money for there bullshit schemes you can actually run heavier so it just goes to show its not about safety its all about money. Truckers are allready heavily regulated and heavily targeted they hide behind the its all for SAFETY song and dance to get there grubby hands deeper in your pockets. Most law enforcement wouldnt even be qualified to start a fuckn lawmower let alone tell someone if a truck is safe or not. Theyre all smug egotistical losers that clearly couldnt handle a job that involves actual work
My grandparents farmed out of necessity to feed themselves. They had 10 kids and lived in a remote part of Knott County. It wasn't that long ago yet seems so distant from what we do now.
I was raised in McRoberts and knew them boys all my life grew up and went to school they were some of my best friends back in the 80s new Vernon quit well he would help anybody he was a good person he was never judge for what he did people really liked him for who he was and I really think alot of Neal his late brother mark and Michael still to this day
Great glimpse into life in the Appalachian Mountains. It reminds me of my childhood times when people were honest and worked hard. It’s nice to know places like this still exist.
The beautiful Southern Accent is calming, peaceful and approachable. Hollywood has caused much of why people make fun of Southerners. If the grid fails with no electricity it’s the Southern people that will be able to survive with all their intelligence and survival skills unlike the majority of “educated” people. Language has nothing to do with intelligence.
