Thank you for doing this. I'm scheduled to assemble a Kibler kit with SOAW soon and your videos give me a good idea of what to expect.

Nice speed. What ram size and pump/motor size are you using? Starting my build in December. Cheers!

Too strong, under built. Carbon monoxide poisoning. Switch to electric asap. One cylinder ideal to prevent roll. Good initiative just got to scrap that design. Look at my press

Very impressive but there is way too much flex in the ram.

Gas powered? Treadle yet? Fix leaks? can you breathe?

Love it. How did u learn to build it? Im wanting to put one on paper so i can eventually build one too. Im inundated with youtubes that dont say much about the engineering behind there presses. Plans or a place i can plug in numbers and have a better idea of what i need would be awesome. Yours is the best functioning ive seen yet in the diy group. I have a huge electric motor. Just meed to know what else i need. Thanks a bunch for sharing your project.

It's a beast - a regular TREX forging press - nicely done mate and thanks for sharing!

Amazing job! Would likle to see the whole setup though. Whats the tonnage of the press?
@rhitee93
@rhitee93 7 лет назад
It is a little over 37 tons. It will move about 3 in/sec at low range, and about 1 in/sec at full force. I'm still tweaking some things, so there is a good chance I'll do another video soon and will show the whole setup.

amazing job, the gussets look like shark jaws needs something less noisey for the motor like a 3 hp. electric ?

Thanks. Unfortunately I don't have power in the shed where I do my forging, so I had to use a gas engine. It takes a 14hp engine to run the 22/7gpm two-stage pump that powers the press. An electric motor could be smaller than 14hp. I haven't calculated the size it would have to be, but I suspect it will take more than 3hp. Ultimately, I will put the engine outside the shed in a lean-to, but for now I am fixing some small issues. (Like the leak you can see in the background)

@@rhitee93 Since AC motors will happily draw a lot more amperage than rated HP, for intermittent use, you can get away with about half the HP. The key here, though, is the intermittent part. Since you are only really loading the system hard during the main squeeze portion of the cycle, a 7.5HP electric motor should work (assuming your pump is designed to run at the RPM an AC induction motor runs (3450-3600 RPM). An 1800 RPM motor is probably too slow. This way, you don't burn the motor up. Electric motors are so different than a gas engine, as load increases, amperage draw increases, meaning more torque output, whereas with a gas engine, as the load increases, RPM's drop, which means torque output drops as well. This is why you can often replace a gas engine with a lower power rated electric motor.

I have everything and was just wondering how you wired your vfd.. did you find a video of it or just have a good knowledge of wiring?

I've been looking at this setup on eBay. I've got a 1.5 hp motor laying in my shop I thing would be a good fit. Do u recommend the Oregon blade maker setup?
@rhitee93

I have been very happy with the grinder, and would claim that it is an excellent value. I have no reservations in recommending it. I used a 1hp variable speed motor on mine. I love the variable speed, and would not want to be without it now. However, now that I am more used to the grinder, I find that I can overload my small motor if I lean into the platen real hard while grinding on a large surface. 1.5 would certainly be better.

That looks like a long Deba. Nice clean cuts. You made the knife? I just lost a 12" yanagi yesterday. O1 tool steel seems to harden in air....
