Yes, absolutely slip would be better than water. I just use water for middle schoolers to make the process easier and less messy. I would still scratch which is also commonly called scoring.
It would be possible to create a hole in the base and make or find some type of plug to run the cord through but that could leak. This type of cord is very narrow and discreet so to me, it was the easiest and best option to run over the side.
Yes any sonnet should work with the beat. It would also be possible for a rap or poem to work with the beat but not necessarily be a sonnet. The best way to check is to count the syllables of each line and check the rhyme scheme
I forget the exact brand it wasn’t anything fancy. Any set of graphite drawing pencils should work similarly. Just make sure you have a range from hard (4H, 2H) medium (HB) and soft (2B, 4B, 4B)
