I love the fact that the "bad guy" driver shows no emotion, it speaks volumes that his character was a professional that remained calm and knew what he was doing. He ended up making one mistake because well, he was the bad guy and no one can out drive plot armor. Different time, different style, just as good, just different.

I'd say the chases in "The Seven Ups" and "French Connection" come in very close second and thirds....

Every time I watch this I keep wondering if the Charger was an automatic or standard transmission. I know the Mustang is a 4 speed w/ a 390, almost evenly matched to the 440 in the R/T Charger.

What I heard: film editing had to edit out from film the Charger's brake lights, the Mustang could not keep up to the 440 Mopar and the Charger had to keep braking to film the scene as a close chase scene.

Well you can always check out the police chase scene in the movie the thing with two heads. It's almost a quarter of the movie long, wow lots of police cars lost, easily rivaling The Blues Brothers

How is this considered the greatest car chase of all times i have seen better in plenty of movies like gone in 60 seconds and about every fast and the furious movie?

I watched this because of an episode of Blue Bloods. I don't exactly get how this is the 'greatest car chase' of all time. The Blues Brothers chase was better, and even after that I would put basically most of the Fast and Furious Films over this.

What I love about watching this chase scene is trying to recognize all the landmarks and different neighborhoods. I grew up in the City, many of these old buildings and roads are still there totally unchanged. Oddly, it appears completely out of sequence from one shot to another, it’s like they teleport to completely different parts of the city in each take. One moment they are downtown, they they’re on the bayside, then the ocean side, then they’re to the south, then back in the middle of the city. Trying to recreate this drive would take all day. I love it nonetheless. I love watching old movies set in San Francisco, this and the Dirty Harry series are my favorites.

The Heavy driving the Dodge is Bill Hickman who was not only an actor but also a stunt driver and stunt co-ordinator on many movies including The French connection and The Seven-ups during the 70s.

I guess my old German family station wagon with a tame baseline engine could outdo those in most things *except* in 0 to 60. Mustang seem to have the softer suspension of those two cars, given how it rolls on corners.

The film's insurance underwriter would only allow Steve McQueen to film chase closeup clips -- like John Wayne in McQ. The real driving was done by Bud Ekins, who also rode the bike in The Great Escape. Trivia I picked up that makes sense. Great scenes and movies nonetheless. Seven Ups car chase coming next. Same stunt driver -- Bill Hickman. Do it.

Lol, the body roll, lack of traction and tyres squealing. These cars really could have benefited from low profile tyres, modern suspension and tyres, ABS and AWD. Maybe even lane keeping assist. 😅

When I was a kid buying his first car in the 80's, I was obsessed. It was either gong to be a 64 1/2 - 65 Mustang, or a Cougar. I settled in the Mustang. My dad helped me scout potential options. This was back when a guy could (had to - no internet) pick up an "Auto Trader" and pick up the phone and call potential sellers. He was an airline mechanic, and knew cars inside and out - great ally to have when looking for your first car. I had my heart set on a sweet little '65 notchback. When I think "car", I think "65 notchback mustang" to this very day. (Well, that and "Ford Fairlane 500 Galaxy Skyliner Continental convertible" with retractable hardtop - my next car : l Dad tried to get me to consider looking at fastbacks, but I was already smitten bitten in love with the notchy. Watching this, I get it. And this film came out when dad was a young man looking into his early cars. Great scene. McQueen's a stallion, and the Mustang fastback is an icon in its own right. Thanks for the share Cheers!

Robert Vaughn was in this, so I got my family to see it back in 1968, me being a big _Man From UNCLE_ fan. It was rated M due to the realistic violence. I forget what they thought of the plot, but seeing this chase on the big screen was unforgettable. We were buzzing about it afterwards, how it felt like we were actually in the car during the bumps. It's the car sounds that really make the scene come alive. I wish I could see it in a theater again. My home TV is too small.
