My name is Darin Starr and I'm a full-time bodybuilding coach. I'm dedicated to simplifying bodybuilding for everyone so you can see the greatest results for the effort that you put in.
Love this information! 1. For a 112 lb woman 1-2 grams of carbs is a big variance- 112 grams vs 224 grams. How would manage that number each day? 2. I've been taking Creatine daily for over a year and have no idea what difference it's made. But it's not expensive so I keep doing it. 3. What good is logging if I'm not really lifting that heavy? I'm not going for any PR's so just curious what the point is if I know mentally what I'm capable of (for my age and size) 4. Is someone holding the camera for you I hope? lol
1. I'd go right in the middle, hit that target every day and change it only based on scale data or how things feel. 2. No harm no foul - just not something I feel value in recommending 3. "Heavy" is relative - if you aren't lifting heavy "for you", you aren't working ;) There's always value in tracking progress. You always need to be chasing PR's, but only in the context of your current training program (week to week) - not lifetime. 4. Visor mount clippy thing for the ol' DJI GoPro clone, ha!
No first hand experience those but upon looking it looks like a 100% design rip-off, done cheaper. They also don't have a meal management bag so a direct comparison to this one wouldn't be fair. Even a lot of their colors and patterns are copied direct from WolfPak.
42:17: " Glorified rep counters". I have been saying this FOR YEARS! Another one: A certification does not mean one is qualified to teach and motivate people,
3:26: The industry is loaded with people who get their pro card and immediately add "IFBB Pro" to their Instagram or other social media pages and then instantly go into "coaching". Having a "pro card" does not mean ANYONE is qualified to coach ANYBODY.
Every time I see a new pro (or hell, even someone who just competes once) who then says "hit me up for coaching", I take it as a personal insult. Like...hey, I filed my own taxes, hire me if you need my help! Of course, laws and such, but still...
I have the 45ml meal management and it’s not practical to use I got it for school and the gym so I can bring my meals and still have my gym stuff but the meals take up the second opening. So all you really have is the big open and that where my gym stuff is wrist wraps knee sleeves shower items. I stopped carrying my belt because it just doesn’t fit. I would do the duffel bag one but duffle bag to school is weird and I won’t be able to ride my motorcycle
Agreed, you sacrifice a lot of space with the meal management bag - when I need to carry meals (not often) I'm glad I have it, but otherwise it really cripples the size of that middle compartment.
I haven't, but in browsing their website I'd give a left nut to have fewer product photos and instead have a decent video that shows the bag's features, would be way easier to grasp what it can do that way.
17:50: I put stuff like this under the category of "Things that I Cannot Control" and "Things that Don't Affect Me". Outside of just bodybuilding, one of my best decisions I made in my life over the last couple of years Is Not Worrying About Things I Cannot Control ( such as stressing out over politics and elections) and Things That Don't Affect Me ( Like such and such sports team or professional athlete, entertainer or whatever did this or said this. It doesn''t affect me SO WHY SHOULD I CARE).
Yep and you also probably know it's a pretty uncommon skill, being able to tune out stuff you can't control. It's a bit of a trick for a lot of people!
Sadly there isn't a generic answer, there are so many variables for each competitor - how well they do adhering to a strict plan 365 days a year, how easily they lose body fat (how quickly they gain it, also), and how comfortable they are walking around with a little extra weight. As long as the math works along with the history of what we've been able to achieve before (in terms of rate of weekly loss), there's some good flexibility we can find within the framework for each person.
I can share a billion examples but without context they're all just numbers, haha - if it helps, I never make any decision based on percentages, it's always the absolute values (grams of this, grams of that) that I care about.
11:30: I think the context of this myth is that people use it as an excuse and a crutch to eat whatever they want and justify it by telling everyone in their circle " I work out/exercise". Yeah and often "working out" is doing jack shit for 30 or 60 minutes while using more energy running their tongue muscles and using "exercising" their thumbs on the text keys of their phone.
It’s really refreshing to see a short, no-fluff instructional video like this in my feed. Didn’t have to click through 20 minutes of filler content just to find the important part. I don’t even have straps like that, but I had to stop and say thank you.
Great episode! I too love the Met RX and I occasionally find other flavors (churro and apple pie?) that are tasty too. Robert Irvine’s are sold at Costco and they are tasty. They have a mint flavor that’s pretty good.
The apple pie is decent, I think the 'fruity cereal' one is highly disappointing and there's another - I can't remember what it was - that I was pretty sure I was close to breaking a tooth on, ha!
@@fivestarrphysique Cookie Dough Chunk Puff, Peanut Butter Puff - I stick to the PUFF variety instead of the bars. They do seasonal flavors, which is fun. Denia might like these too.
I love No Cow 🥺🥺🥺 you picked a bad one. Birthday Cake and their non-dipped flavors are really tasty! And the most macro-efficient vegan bar on the market.
Just calling balls and strikes - that particular one wasn't the worst, but it was damn close. I also like to think: "if you can't get chocolate right, you've got a problem"
This was great!!! I’ve never thought to microwave a protein bar, that’s genius. Also I just tried the Robert Irvine Fit Crunch bar today, holy crap it’s good
Denia's got all the great ideas, the microwave is a solid one. And that Fit Crunch did not come to eff around! It's taking the title home all by itself.
I am so sorry to hear about your mom!! Hang in there and don’t beat yourself up. One day at a time, sometimes one hour at a time. Keep posting your progress!!
Oh I'm hanging in there and there's zero beating up of anyone, haha - I needed a break post-show I just would have preferred it look a little different! Turning the corner now though - thank you!
Thanks, I actually shot 6 (SIX) videos over the weekend that I'm editing to batch out, outside of the weekly updates and podcasts. Time to branch out! And a ton of course videos also, staying busy busy busy
I'm so sorry for your loss. I had a big loss in my family this time last year, and I just want to offer that the grieving process has its own learning curve, and it's okay that the process isn't "productive." And it's also okay if bodybuilding/working out just isn't serving you right now. There were days where just getting out of bed and showing my face to my family was the best I could do - and its okay that that was all I could offer. You said similar thinge to me at that time in my life, and I just want to offer up that you deserve that same patience and perspective. Grief takes on many different forms and how to manage it can change from day to day - and there is no "right" or "perfect" way to handle it. Please be patient and kind to yourself while you navigate this ❤️
Appreciate that, Grace - yeah it's a different process for everyone and in every situation. The only universal truth really is that it's not fun, and we would rather not. It was a great week hanging with the family, but at the same time now that I'm back home (as of 3.5 hours ago, now) I finally feel like I have a little space for my head to breathe, for the first time in 6 weeks really.
My deepest condolences 🙏🏾 .. this was super helpful and meaningful. It gave me pause, I get caught up with overthinking the process. And this reminds me to pause to smell the roses of life. Prep is just one facet of our multilayered life.
It sure is indeed - and it's easy to think "this is the most important thing in my life!!!" - and it is, until it isn't. And then the pendulum can swing back around.
Sorry for your loss. I'm with you in regards to the post show blues, but kind of early..I'm about a week out and the anxiety of post show binge eating gots me certain way..
Under normal circumstances I'd be in good shape - the big thing that I did to help with that is to write up my post-show diet BEFORE the show, so I came home from the show knowing what to do and also having some new stuff to look forward to. Unfortunately, other stuff happened!
I’m sorry for your loss Darin. Be gentle on yourself. The gym is always there for us and is going nowhere. Eventually lifting will feel cathartic again 💜
Thank you. The funny thing is that lifting has never felt cathartic or like a stress relief - just not the relationship I've ever had with it. I've always needed to go in with a clear head and treat it like work. Weird!
Well hopefully you’ll have them for sale. Let us know if/when you do. I’ll order for sure. Women’s Tee and Tank. A cropped Tee or Sleeveless Tee would be cute.
Very sorry to hear about the unfortunate events that led to this podcast coming to fruition, but I absolutely loved this one! And call me a weirdo, but I love math. I feel like I could sit with both of you guys and enjoy hours of commentary!
Not sure I agree completely about not logging workouts with apps although it’s a subjective practice. I benefit from the auto rest timers as well as 1 rep max calculators. Also u can search alternative lifts for similar muscle groups if the gym is packed and equipment is taken for the first or second usual options. I guess for really advanced lifters these aren’t necessarily that helpful though.
All fair points - I just know from experience in working with clients and what I see with my own eyes, phones in the gym provide more problems than solutions. Also in 25+ years of hypertrophy training I've never needed or wanted a 1RM calculator, which is indicative I think big picture of what these apps offer - stuff I don't need. I certainly always advocate for people to find their own solution, but a paper logbook is too quickly overlooked/dismissed these days and I think it's worth keeping as an option.
@@fivestarrphysique there is a lot to be said (good) about the physical act of writing things down also, to be fair. The 1 rep max calculator I find helps me know if I’ve progressed if I changed up my rep ranges or weights for whatever reason. So for example if I usually do 6-8 at 100 and then felt like going randomly heavy and hit 120 for 3, the 1 rep max estimate would help me know if I actually progressed in weight or not (unless u know a simple mental maths hack for this haha). Like was 120 at three more or less than 100 at 8? Etc. usually u shouldn’t jump around in programs but sometimes I get a bit bored or feel like going a little heavy . Not sure if that makes sense.
Great meeting you back stage and Congratulations again! I ended up placing 1st Mens Physic Novice, 2nd Mens Physic 40+, and 5th in the open. In the open I was talking to the other guys backstage before we went up and found out the 2 that placed 1st and 2nd were in their early 30's and 4th and 5th were in their early/mid 20's. They all had a little more muscle mass than me and I had a good 16 years on them so I'm not mad at that 5th place finish. My next show is in Shelby, NC June 22nd which will be different as family and friends will be there and my coach and team will NOT be there. Happy that I was able to experience Battle at the River with them to better prepare me for the 2nd show. Again, great to meet you back stage and best of luck for the future!
Chad thanks a ton for coming up and saying hi, it was great meeting you and CONGRATS on the finishes as well, super cool! And with the home crowd in 2 weeks that'll be fun, not a lot of time for 'improvements' but getting the first show under the belt always means the 2nd show will be more comfortable and have a bit more polish as well. Good luck!
@@fivestarrphysique Thanks! I'll keep you posted on how the 2nd show goes but FIRST - This Saturday I'm running in my 3rd Savage Race, doing both the Race and Blitz for a total of 8 miles and 42 obstacles. This is going to be a year of self imposed challenges lol
