I think Buddy was technically a fabulous drummer, after all he had drumsticks in his hands since he was 18 months old. But and there’s a big but, Buddy was very restricted by virtue of having zero interest in other musical genres. If I were to pick my favourite drummer based on talent, musicality and multi dimensionalism, it would have to be Billy Cobham. Billy is very much his own man and a brilliant composer to boot. Every Buddy solo is like a drum exhibition, but sometimes it lacks soul, covered up by the ravages of the physical effort spent on it. There are some fabulous Drummers out there…Steve Gadd for instance, multi genre, trailblazing (solo in Aja), great collaboration with the likes of Al Di Meola. Circling back to Cobham, he was not just exceptional as a drummer, he innovated and trail blazed in a way Buddy’s tunnel vision restricted him from achieving. There is no world championships or olympics of drumming, it just comes down to favourites. Buddy will always be loved and admired for his exceptional technical ability and no one should grudge him that.
The one and only Bruce song recorded by Boom Carter….Max Weinberg once said he could not figure out or play that snare-hihat breakdown so he made up his own part. Bruce’s best-known song, and the one neither of his “other drummers” Mad Dog of Mighty Max played on.
Ive been trying to get faster at double bass and after watching this and isolating the ankle stroke, i realize how weak my left calf is. Will definitly put this into my practice routine. I have a feeling this is what i need.
