I'm building a 17' Jet Boat powered by a 1.8L Supercharged 265HP Yamaha SVHO. This boat is designed with fishing, exploration, and river fun with my friends and family in mind.
@@carlvan7908 yeah pretty much, I think it reduced the full tilt by like one notch. But that’s plenty for what I needed. I sold this boat a few years ago and I’ve been building an epic jetboat. Check out my IG page for the new boat. @northern.arc.designs
I don’t unfortunately, but I bet if you searched boat control install or something you would find something on how they’re installed. Dangar marine on RU-vid has all sorts of videos on boat stuff.
Thanks for the video! I have a 59’ Johnson 35hp with the exact same shifter. Do you happen to have a video or know where I can find one of how to wire the ignition? I hooked mine up the the battery and the motor and it doesn’t do anything and I want to make sure it is hooked up correctly.
There’s also a channel called Brandon’s garage and I know he has one too. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t7mbcqRcSpA.htmlsi=Qhe3-0UpRf5ZrvrL
This particular motor already came with a key'd ignition when I purchased it with this boat, however the ignition was actually broken when I bought it so I paid a shop to put in a new ignition. I moved the ignition to the console after I modified the boat. There is a good youtube channel at "Brandon's Garage" and he has a video on installing a key'd ignition I believe. Hope that helps! I dont own this boat anymore because I build a jetboat instead. Check out my other videos for that!
Finally a Quality video that answers my questions on how the running gear is attached to an older Johnson outboard that formerly was a tiller set up. Great video
Great information. I just picked up an old boat that was stick steering and all that stuff was removed. But has the same motor on it. Now I see how easy it will be to reconnect it to how it came from the factory.
You can run them normally (mounted to the side of whatever console you are using). I just did mine flush just because I wanted to. I didn’t really change anything on the controls side of things besides building a bracket to recess it down so it’s flush with the console.
I think I have that exact same shifter… how did you hook up the cables in there? Existing was just inner cables (wire) my new cables have the eyes on them like yours… do you somehow take that off to expose just the wire? Needing help
It was quite a few years ago that I messed Around with it. But if I recall correctly there was a round little cylinder shaped end piece with a hold through it that you threat the end of the cable into and it’s held captive inside the lever “box” part. As you move the lever it pushes or pulls the cable. DM me on Instagram if you want and I can try to explain it better with photos. @Northern.arc.designs You can also check out my most recent boat project there.
@@Noahlochner0 yeah I don’t have Instagram or Facebook or anything really lol. I’m wondering if my cables are wrong… they look like yours with the holes in them to connect to the motor… but they have holes on the other end too, but that’s where it goes into the control box, but looks like you have to put wire in there… so I’m not sure
I honestly don’t remember. I think it tilt a few degrees maybe? This motor sat pretty far away from the ground when trailered so I never bothered tilting it even before I did the steering. There is ways to make sure you still can tilt it though, just make the bracket attach to the upper tiltable part of the motor and not the bottom stationary side and you’ll be golden.
Dometic SeaStar Safe-T Quick Connect Rotary Steering Kit, SS137XX www.amazon.com/dp/B0000AXUAR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_0QJ2H593H1135BPJ6GSB It’s this kit, but you gotta measure the length of teleflex cable you need for your boat. You can use any key way steering wheel with it.
Man please tell me you have picture of the layout of the inside of this boat! I’m rebuilding my 16 foot and can’t think of the layout I want. But watching this video I think I found exactly what I want!
@@chrisbeall5831 hey man I tried emailing you but the emails got returned. Shoot me an email real fast and I’ll reply to it with the photos of the layout. Noahlochner0@gmail.com
Hey I have a question would really appreciate it if you could help me, I have a 14 ft Jon boat with a 6hp outboard on the back and was wondering how you hook up a throttle cable to it if you can?
What motor are you running? Check the sides of your motor and see if there are any control cable brackets. If you haven’t yet, check out this quick video I did on how control cables are connected. If it looks like your motor is missing some of the attachment points for the cables, I’d probably venture to guess no. At least not without ordering some parts. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TnrzruI3RiE.html If you don’t see any brackets or connection points, I’d probably suggest running it over to any boat shop and ask them if there are brackets and parts available for that particular motor to make it happen. Hope this helps! You can always DM me on Instagram too @Northern_arc and I can try to help further.
@@darrylb4048 I’m picking up the aluminum for my new boat in a few weeks. I’m building a 265hp 17’ jetboat! I’ll be posting a lot more when I build it and document the process. Thanks for watching!
Where can you get that throttle cable, gear cable, and steering cable? I have a 14' MirroCraft that has an 85 Johnson 25HP tiller control pull start motor. I don't mind the pull start, but due to back issues, I want to build a console and be able to run the boat from that.
You can order universal shift and throttle cables and then order the ends that are specific to Evinrude/Johnson (they’re the same) or you can order cables that are specific for your motor. Either way works. And the teleflex steering cable, I’ve always gone with the seastar ones. Super good reputable company and the instructions are clear. I’ll add links in the description for parts to make all this happen.
Links should be in the description now. Hope that helps! Just measure what length of cable you need. Measuring directions should also be on seastar’s website in that link.
The throttle cable and shift cable are noth hooked to a little bracket on the side of the motor. She shift cable goes to a little lever which, obviously shifts the motor from forward, natural, reverse. The throttle cable is connected at the motor side to a little lever that controls the throttle.. My motor came with the little brackets for both shift and throttle. If your motor doesn’t have it, you can order the part online if you look around. On the lever side of things, I just ran the cables under my console on the right side and they mount into the bottom of that control lever. Left is throttle, right is shift. I don’t have this boat anymore or I would give a more detailed walkthrough. My buddy had a similar motor so next time I’m at his house I’ll try to explain and do a little video for you guys!
Haha I filmed this completely unprepared after working an extremely long graveyard shift. I definitely should have prepared better, buuuut I’m trying to make up for it by answering anyone who has questions about things.
Did you build the steering column and add the remote start? Do you have videos of those mods? I have a 1970 14' MirroCraft that has a 1985 Johnson 25HP motor, and I really want to build a steering console similar to what you did there. My motivation is the 15 back surgeries I've had. Sitting on those benches and having to stay somewhat turned to use the tiller gets pretty painful after a while.
So when I initially started this boat project I didn’t know how to weld aluminum so I designed them console and had my buddy weld it. The steering wheel and its connection hardware are from seastar I believe. It’s super easy to install. It comes with a template for you to mark exactly where the holes need to be and you just drill them out with a hole saw and a small drill bit for the bolt holes. This motor already had a remote start when I bought it, however it didn’t work so I brought it to a marine shop and paid them like 60 bucks to make it work again. I believe there’s another youtube channel which I’ll have to go find the link for, but it shows how to add a remote start. Admittedly, wiring stuff isn’t my strength so I leave important things to the professionals as often as I can. I cut my teeth into the boating world with the boat in this video but I’ve grown a lot in what I can do and what I know how to do. I would highly recommend doing a console and adding steering. For me, it makes the boating experience soooo much better. I’ve Also had back surgery and for my next boat that I’m going to build from scratch, I’m planning on designing some suspension mounts for some really nice seats for that exact reason. If you look up some of those air ride suspension seats, probably something like that.
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6Nm8lPZxzlk.html Here’s the link do the video on how to do the remote start. If you like this kinda thing, Brandon’s garage is a great resource for boat related stuff.
@@Noahlochner0 what do you mean by an air ride seat for a boat? It looked like in your video you made your steering console so that you are standing...did I see that correctly? If so, do you like driving the boat while standing?
@@shanepeter1616 Yeah Its a stand up console in that boat. I love standing up and operating the boat. It lets me see alot more of what is under the water in front of me, which is important because I typically run rivers and there is often a ton of rocks and debris that gets moved around each year. Air ride is just a type of suspension seat base. I'm planning on (Maybe) building something similar to the Shockwave S5 seat bases. Heres a link to their website just so you can see what i'm talking about and how they work. Essentially its got a few linkages between two plates. One plate mounts to the boat, the other plate mounts to the bottom of your seat and it is suspended by basically a bike shock that you can adjust the damper and rebound. Good for us dudes with back issues.
I get the sense that you are taking the title to mean something like a remote control. But in the marine industry, Connecting cables to your motor to be steered from a remote location on the boat is called remote steering. You can find kicker motor remote steering kits online. Sorry if the title is misleading.
@@Noahlochner0 Perhaps I am not "nautical" enough lol - I am developing a REAL electronic steering for electric outboards (similar to Torqeedo & ePropulsion) - hence my interest & subsequent comment on your video.
Homy Ficta awesome! That would be a fun project. I’m about to build a 17’ jetboat for exploring and fishing my local rivers. Ordering the aluminum this week! Should see some new content in the next few months. I’d love to see your project as it progresses. Are you doing and RU-vid videos on it?
