We have a small catio we bought from a kit. It’s panels that fit together, and we positioned it next to the house where we had a cat door from when the cats were indoor/outdoor. But our current cats are so food motivated that we do let them out during the middle of the day or when we are outside too. If we aren’t home they are in, but they have the catio if they want it.
I’m guessing they avoided the rubber tree and croton because they’re pretty caustic with their sap. Rubber trees being a Ficus (figs) and Crotons being part of the Euphorbiaceae (spurge) family. So related to poinsettias, fire sticks (Euphorbia tirucalli), crown of thorns (E. milli), etc. with that burning white sap. They’re just a more tropical euphorb. The ones the rats went after seem either non-toxic, like the Calatheas, or semi-edible (to animals) or have edible cousins. Although with the Aroids, some animals still taste and try their luck! Aroids like the Philodendron, Colocasia (Taro), Alocasia, Dieffenbachia (dumbcane!), peace lily, Pothos, Scindapsus, Syngonium, Anthurium, Monstera…!!! Lol, aroids in general are all considered “toxic” - though I feel like for aroids, the better word is more “irritating” than “poisonous” or toxic. Of course if you ate enough of it, it could cause problems. I’ve eaten taro greens, and they were slightly undercooked, and I was fine, but it did feel like I had sharp sand in my throat and my mouth for the whole day; so a mild and slightly bad irritation from the calcium oxalate crystals. But stopped after a few hours. I think some animals are fine with it, but most avoid it. That’s why monstera have holes in their leaves, to look “sick” and keep animals away. Rats don’t care though, lol
i have a rats also...i live in the middle of cornfields & have a flowing water creek....they ate all the hearts off my SOH variegated, parts of my 3 holiday cactus, & some others...this is only a winter battle & the cats get ! & there's another...... i just got a mini orchid the day after I had to put my little doogy to sleep....I've always been scared of those.....beautiful place.
