This would have been about year after the rails were removed. The north end was always flooded. For about seven years, this corridor was just left for Mother Nature to reclaim.
It’s on the former Madison Branch of the Illinois Central railroad between the communities of Belleville and Monticello. It’s primary purpose in its later years was to haul coal to the UW power plant in Madison. However, it lost its purpose when the WICT got its coal from Prairie Du Chen, instead of the Chicago Pacific in Freeport. Maybe parts of the line could be reactivated in the future for commuter rail, though it’s not likely for a long time.
