Oakes Daylilies is a family farm that has been around for four generations. We know daylilies because that’s all we grow. Nestled in East Tennessee near the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, we’ve been growing farm-fresh daylilies for over 40 years and have built our business on sending huge, healthy plants that take off right away. We don't sell daylilies that we wouldn't plant in our own home gardens.
As gardeners, we love to share what we grow! That's why you'll receive free daylilies (we call them "bonus" plants) with every order. If for some reason a daylily doesn't grow for you, no problem! We offer a lifetime guarantee on all our daylilies.
Thanks to our large, healthy daylilies, our lifetime guarantee, superior customer service and a passion for what we do, we have earned a stellar reputation across the country. We take your trust-and our daylilies-seriously.
Carnival in Mexico is one I would love in my garden ❤❤❤ it would look so good with all my white panicle hydrangeas. I have a garden tour of my backyard on my channel. I’m running out of space but I could tuck it in well
That's Wild Horses. That picture was sent to us by a customer and we think it's just gorgeous! Wild Horses is one that can look nearly creamy white to almost pale yellow depending on soil quality and available sunlight. We think the contrast with the dark purple eyezone looks fabulous either way (but then again, we love eyezones!)
We love Nutmeg Elf. It's got a great color, but we especially love its smaller blooms-- such a cool departure from the typical large bloomed spider-type varieties we often see
Some of our best rebloomers for zone 10a are Frankly Scarlet, Persian Market and Dewy Sweet. Lemon Vista is also a fantastic bloomer. It is not registered as a rebloomer, but we get rounds of rebloom from it and so do our customers.
Great video! The one question I have is if I divide the day lilly but want to transplant it a week later will that be okay? How long can the clump be stored out of ground before replanting?
It's best to divide and plant the same day if possible. However, if you absolutely can't get both done the same day or the next, the next best thing is to temporarily plant it in a pot and water it well. If you don't have a pot available, it's possible to leave it unplanted for a week, but you'll need to move it to a dry, cool place that's out of direct sun. Once you plant it, make sure to give it plenty of water-and keep it watered-until it begins to green back up.
Thank you so much for this info. Since watching your videos, I have now 3 blooming proliferations. Santa's Little Helper, Sunday Gloves and an unknown coral. Looking forward to getting more. Thanks again!
Thank you! I finally found someone to assure me that it'll be okay if I dig up my overgrown, messy daylilies and divide them in early August rather than live with that mess out there until later in the fall when it's too chilly to do it!
I have bunches an bunches of orange daylilies. It good eating their blooms. I have so many. I am planning to divide up some batches that have grown compacted & spread out the beauty as well as have plenty of blooms for eating 🙂
When buying day lilies like those ordered from you and planting them how often do I water them? Will that inch a week still be enough to get them established?
It depends on the weather where you are and when you planted your daylilies. If it's super hot and they're newly planted, you may need to water them an inch or so a couple of times a week.
We have six containers of daylilies that are blooming at the moment, we water them with a watering can twice a week. Its been a rainy summer in Ireland with temperatures of 70 degrees so far this year but I check the containers daily. If the weather picks up I will water them three times a week.
Sounds like a great plan. You are correct to check the containers daily. Daylilies in containers tend to dry out faster than if they were planted in the ground.
We are selling these but not currently. We grow everything we sell. Sometimes we have to take them off our website so they can increase in quantity in order for us to offer them again. They'll be back as soon as they get large enough!
I'm new in all of this. Can you please tell me how often The lilies need to be divided. I divided one clump 2 years ago and transplanted somewhere else but the ones that I transplanted never bloomed. What have I done wrong? I know they need full sun but can they survive with about four hours of sun per day? Also, can they survive if planted in pots? Thank you for your help. 🌾
There's no one size fits all rule when it comes to dividing daylilies. You'll know it's time to divide them when they get too big and/or stop blooming like they used to. As far as sun goes, they need about 6-8 hours of sun a day. If yours aren't receiving that, it might explain why they haven't bloomed since you transplanted them. It also can take different varieties of daylilies different periods of time before they start blooming after dividing. My most recent order I got from Rosie!❤ I love that we got to see who helps, great when they give a smile or a comment, too. I appreciate that you introduce everyone and do not take them for granted. I love the videos for fun interest, it is nice to refer to them when you need the education, also.
Thanks for your kind words, Jennifer. We're all part of a big team, here. It takes all of us to make Oakes Daylilies work. We're glad that came across. Thanks for watching!
I do this every year and you would be surprised with the variations from the parent plants. From one orange parent, I have gotten peach, yellow, rose and a bi-color orange and yellow. I guess you never know what they might have been pollinated with.
My Strawberry Candy daylilies were a beautiful pink when I bought them, but over the next 2 years, they started turning a peachy color, losing that beautiful pink. There are no orange daylilies in my yard, nor in my 3 adjacent neighbors' yards.
We are thankful that deer aren't a problem for us here. Many of our customers who have this problem have suggested a repellent called Deer Defeat. Obviously we can't recommend it since we haven't tried it, but our customers that have used it say it works great.
@@joycemaine1728 Yes! You could plant them now. We typically suggest you plant them at least a month before your first hard freeze. If you planted now, they would definitely have enough time to get established before your cold weather hits.
We're not sure yet. To be featured in the catalog, we need daylilies that have large quantities. For that reason, we typically check our fields and make catalog decisions once shipping slows down (usually in October).
a use for darker flowers is to add fake depth. if you put DARK foliage or flowers in the back of a narrow bed, and bright or light foliage and flowers in the FRONT it can make a narrow planting bed look deeper
I believe Rolling Raven was shown on a short a few days ago. You have such wonderful varieties, a similar replacement would be acceptable for most. People don’t realize you are not just an online business right? Since we are experiencing 108+ heat index, will be ordering later in the season. For now need to decide on my favorites which keep changing😎.
I know you sometimes have sold out of some daylilies , or you skip a year selling them, or change it up for some that sell better. Have to say that Rollin' Raven caught my eye, too. By the way, am expecting a shipment from you rhis week or next. Thank you, have gotten many lovely daylilies from you, and only one that did not grow.
"Rolling Raven" isn't available on your website. Why show flowers that you don't have. I get all excited to order a given daylily and its not even available. I do enjoy and learn from your videos.
We appreciate this comment. We are growers and grow all the hybrid daylilies we show in our videos. The plants we sell are live plants and they can sometimes sell out or sell low so we have to divide them out to increase our stock. When that happens, we have to wait for them to increase in size and quantity in order to be able to offer them again-- and we're at the mercy of Mother Nature for that! This video was about beautiful dark daylilies and Rolling Raven certainly worthy of that distinction. We will offer it again. 💜
I inherited from my old friend, William R." Bill" Pate, almost 75 of his hybrids. He"d be 107 yrs old now. Any that are named "Nolichucky... ", are his hybrids. He named one after me, "My Friend John". He was a Renaissance man. Unicoi County, TN. I'm down to about 10 after several moves and gifting them.
