University of the Arts brings together visual artists, designers, actors, dancers, musicians, multimedia artists, filmmakers and more, and acts as a catalyst for their creativity. In a vibrant community at the heart of Philadelphia, UArts students cross traditional boundaries to develop new ways of expression and influence in a world where creative thinkers are needed more than ever. The institution's roots as a leader in educating creative individuals date back to 1868.
You can see the look on Kerry Walk's face knowing that this would be the only time she would be doing this. I hope she and David Yager feels guilt for the rest of their days for this.
I originally only watched this video because it was a part of my English assignment, but watching this video was so inspirational and touching (especially as an artist myself). Neil Gaiman has a way with his words really!
Neil Gaiman charges $100,000 for a speaking engagement. I understand he does this because he doesn't want to do too many. Fair enough. I love his work. The man could read me the phone book but I also think his charm is not of value to the students here. When asked, (paraphrasing) "how to make a living as a writer/artist?"" he gives his slow, small smile and his dry English delivery saying, "you need to learn how to monetize your work". And everyone laughs, but student's money, a lot of it, was spent on this interview and his speech and I believe it is a cheap shot to say something that trite and useless to those stepping out into the mad world of creative work. Talking about making art is a whole lot easier than talking about how to monetize it and students need that more.
I literally am watching this video solely because I have to answer questions about it on my English exam tomorrow. It is 3 am right now. I should stop procrastinating..
When Neil talked about the transitioning and future, who knew AI would impact jobs in the creative field first. This world continues to surprise me and not for the better.
I probably loop back to rewatch this at least once per year. I have a transcription of it in my "commonplace book." Decades of being a writer, and I still need this message often.
In the beginning of the talk, someone is strangling a woman and as the talk progresses she falls silent, probably dead. Yet the audience is unmoved. The audience has no soul.
Aaron I love your background guitar playing on [Taylor’s “August” in long pond studio sessions]. I wish I know how to play what you played in that song. It’s soooooo goooood!
Yes shout out to my granddaughter Hale' C. Butcher who attended the commencement after getting her balchelor degree in music in vocal performance and minor in music education in December 2021. Also for being a lead vocal in the song "With A Little Help From My Friends" at the ceremony!
