It's a bit of an abstract term, but it basically means trying to make things sound more cohesive. So less like one instrument being stacked on top of another, and more like a singular sound.

I tend to go through manually and clip gain each track vocal track before the mix. I normally have two sessions, one that is the production session and one that is the mixing session. So all the clip gaining will be done in the production session, before the mix. Oh and I don't have a specific dB measurement to shoot for. I'm just trying to get the vocal as a whole to sound more consistent, pre-compression. Hope that helps!
