I tried the approach of helping my sister with an open heart. Opened my home to her even. Even thou I was and still am going through some major health issues. While here she expected my husband and I to constantly run errands for her, wait on her hand and foot. To the point my health got worse. When mentioning this to my sister, that I gave to be diligent with what I eat and not over doing. That she needed to do for her self more. She walked out of the room. Refused to clean after herself and still demanded we do for her. My husband pointed out that I was getting worse. She shrugged ..literally shrugged her shoulders and asked if was going to go get the fast food she was requesting. She has a car and can drive by the way. The next day he asked her to leave, find someone else to stay with. When she left she stole money as well as personal items. I said nothing just wished her well. Two weeks later she has pneumonia..they find she has cancer. She is now living with our brother. Her daughter has been taking her to appointments. I am going 3 times a week to my appointments. I have cancer as well. In the month she has been gone she has not once called to check on me. I have checked in on her tho she hasn’t spoken to me. Today I wake to a text sent at 5am. I didn’t see it until 9. She texted telling me to come get her for a dr appt. Her appointment is at 9:15. So yeah not happening even if I could drive right, which I cannot. I feel like crap no being able to help her but also upset she would not talk to me at all or even see if I am ok. I am sure my brother has kept her in the loop same as he has me. But it seems it seems to me I do not matter to her at all. Just trying to get past the guilt of not jumping and running as I have all my life to help family, even tho no one in my my family has done the same for me unless I pay them. So it is hard knowing she is so ill and I can’t do anything and yet glad I cannot. Ugh
I couldn’t disagree with this more it’s not that they look to you in time of darkness. It’s not that they look to you as comfort it’s more like they see a sucker . A person that has a hard time saying no. They’re usually quite manipulative and they always seem to need something and they don’t even spread it out. Ask this friend first ask this friend second they just asked the same person over and over because they don’t care if you’re busy, they don’t care if you don’t want to do it and when you do tell them know, what do they do? They get mad so I don’t understand where you get this that they think of you as some sort of wonderful person wanting to help. I believe that this day and age people are struggling all the time or at least a lot of people are single people are struggling or they would ask their husband or wife, but instead they turn to another single person that needs help them self, but do you think they would help them ? No . Rant over.
No it's not special.its taking taking taking and when you have a problem they are just never available or they just don't value or respect you enough as they treat others different or better. Than you.

My two grown daughters call me whenever life throws them difficult circumstances. I have always come to the rescue with finances or other help. The last time they called was really a demand to move into my home because they needed a break from financial responsibility. I said no. I haven’t heard from either one of them since. I’m getting to the age where my health is not As good as it used to be but I never get that “ hey Dad just calling to see how you are doing”. Call. I gave them advice last time I handed over money that I couldn’t afford to give them, that advice was ignored but the money was spent just the same.
Thank you you’re one that’s in touch with reality people don’t call because we’re the only one that’s kind of a egotistical thing especially the mechanic like there’s not 1 million mechanics people want something for nothing whether they’re your child or your friend or your neighbor or a relative other than child everybody wants something free nobody stops to think maybe they’re busy maybe they have a problem maybe they have a life and have things to do many many people think only of themselves
As a retired mechanic of 36 years, I realized how people, including family and friends would often call only because they needed help with a repair and I would help them till one day I noticed that they only contact me when they need help again with repairs in something and it irritated me! Till one day it donned on me that out of ALL the people in the world, they called me! And behind that thought was the realization that maybe it’s because I AM the ONLY ONE who they trust and KNOW is most likely to be the one that is able to help them? And with that a sense of gratitude for being able to be reliable and trusting of others has a way of uplifting my spirits. Thanks and Aloha 🌺
I bet you don’t charge them either and so your conclusion to that I will bet is they call because it’s free you’re not the only mechanic but you’re probably the only free mechanic and you’re needing to make yourself feel better right now about it which I think is really sad
That is far from my intention or my message. I am hoping we can recognize where another person is and try to see their point of view. We are not doormats. We can assert who we are, set up boundaries, and be flexible when needed. All with kindness.
I really love her suggestion of what we should say to them so that they realize we are aware and we feel unappreciated. But, I kind of get the feeling you have. I'm done giving free advice to somebody that only calls...FOR FREE ADVICE!
Basically, yes, that is what she’s saying but now she’s backpedaling because she didn’t realize how ridiculous it sounded in the first place who has time when you’re working full-time to help someone on your day off most people have a family most people are tired and want to rest or they have plans Grown adults should try being as independent as possible. Of course there are exceptions to every rule, but for the most part if you’re going to need someone’s help you should first rely on your family and when they can’t help you, then you could ask a friend, but not when it’s over and over and over and no end in sight. You can also tell when someone appreciates it and when they say they do. This world is full of entitled people, but I guess this doctors never come across them.
