So happy to see Danes as service dogs, my Danes only going on 10 months and brings me more joy than ever. Happy to see them at work helping and doing the same for others
Have a Great Dane as a Blood Sugar Alert Service Dog - LOVE this breed, they having AMAZING personalities and are extremely intelligent! Love what the Service Dog Project does for people as well!
We are training our great dane for my wife to monitor her blood sugar because of her HFI do you have any suggestions on things you found difficult when training because of size or personalities and any solutions you found? Thank you
Start training YOUNG and lots of positive reinforcement! I actually have trained (and still do some) many different types of Service Dogs, for many years before I needed one myself. My Dane is my second Service Dog personally, had to medically retire my lab a year early at the end of the summer. As far as other recommendations, use a traffic lead for the most part once they get large enough - the hands-free leashes are REALLY easy for them to trip over (and possibly hurt themselves)! Just be patient on the occasions they decide to be a little stubborn, but they are pretty easy to train and are very intelligent. Watch out for them being afraid of things and work them through that, expose them to lots of different sounds and smells. :)
