Geranium contains Geraniin, a dehydroellagitannin, which, from my research, is likely a strong anti-viral, which is likely why it was used for colds by the natives.
Thanks for information on the relationship between ants and wild ginger. As a teenager in southeast Ohio in the 1970's my autumn adventure in the woods was to hunt wild ginseng. I often would pass small patches of wild ginger in the old growth woods. On one occasion I stumbled upon an abnormally huge patch of this ginger growing upon a steep hillside in the woods. On top of this hill was also an ancient burial mount, more likely of the Hopewell culture. I've often felt these ancient people may have planted this particular patch some two thousand years ago.
Red Oak’s Crow Path trail is where the skunk cabbage is, near the boardwalk area. I used to work there but sadly, recently left because I moved to Kentucky. I still listen to your show! And guess what…I have a praying mantis out my window right now. I had no idea why it was there, but you taught me that it likes to eat paper wasps. I have a paper wasp problem. Hopefully not for long! 😆
Hmm, common names can apply to multiple plants so can’t say for sure, but what I’ve heard called Indian love grass is a different species of North American native grass Eragrostis pilosa.
@@garybrinker4522 yeah, the blooms look a bit similar, but a lot of cultivars of different species of eragrostis have purple hues in the leaf blades and the flowers have a purple tint as well.
I love this thank you so much. I ordered viola seeds and the owner was kind enough to send me Jacobs ladder seeds as a gift. How lovely, can’t wait to put it in my shady spot that’s bare out front.
I planted some rattlesnake master last year, so I’ve only had it for one season (they didn’t flower last year as they were small). What do I do in the spring (now) for pruning and maintenance? I’m hoping they lived as none of them are showing growth yet (most plants here are just starting to grow). The leaves are all brown and crunchy. Should I cut the leaves back or just leave them until I see growth?
How have the plants done?I just planted 3 small transplants of them cut down to the base and put in my native pollinator garden. Curious to see how they do. This is my 1st experience with Rattlesnake Master, so any tips are appreciated!
@@theghostofteddyperkins3687in my climate (zone 3/4) we get a lot of snow, so these aren’t evergreens in our area. In the spring I end up cutting off the dead leaves. I think mine are just not in the right locations and with the shorter growing season (I won’t have most flowers until sometime in July or August) unfortunately they haven’t done the best. They still grow but I only have 1 or 2 out of the 10 I planted that have flowered. Not sure if it just needs more time, but they’re hard to transplant so I’m sort of stuck where they are. Sorry it’s not great news from me. Hopefully you’re in a better zone!
Glad you found us Christine! I'd be glad to send you registration info if you'd like to join the live Zoom; we meet pretty much every Tuesday at 8pm Central time.
