Sailing the world, that's the goal. We thought we were ready but we ran aground. We're into our refit 2.0, Ixion will be better and more prepared than before and will we begin out journey sailing the seven seas. It may be only be a Catalina 30, but it's a massive journey.

We've been taken by the serenity and freedom of being at sea and now have set ourselves on a course which will lead us across seas and braving the oceans of the world to share ourselves with all of you and explore how the peoples of the world choose to live. Join us as we sail across the world, documenting distance ports in search of building human connections. Your contributions will enable us to produce better videos, upgrade to blue-water boat, reach more people, and leave the world a little bit better than how we found it.

We're not looking to tell only our story, we want to connect with people around the world and help tell their stories too. We're looking forward to sharing our adventure with all of you!

I think in your shoes, i'd have cast an aluminum keel with a lead bottom designed to ground and lighter. Also have taken out that whole bottom of the boat and built it closer to the rest of the hull. You sure had enough materials.

I know this was a bit ago, but do you recall what type of glass you used? Catalina's plans call for 24oz roving and 1.5oz mat....and then the obvious second question: how has it held up over the past 2 years?
@toussaintcruise6054
@toussaintcruise6054 7 месяцев назад
This was a great series! great detail, and easy to follow! One question I had is what type of fiber glass/ resin did you use for this repair? it looks like the pdf calls for 1.5 oz mat and 24 oz something, but it's my understanding that epoxy cant be used with fiberglass mat (chop strand) only with cloth. and it looks like y'all are using cloth.
@ChrisDenny28

Just did the job on my boat yesterday. Used 24 oz roving and 1.5 mat. Some mat is compatible with epoxy, but most is not. You have to check.

As a gay sailor I find so much joy and peace in being on my boat and am outraged at you being confronted by such ignorance. My husband and I have been together for 25 years and living in upstate New York we have not had to deal with too much homophobia and ignorance. Sail on my fellow sailors and let the breeze carry you forward, be safe and conscious of those around you. Looking forward to following your channel. Regards Rob

I have a 1976 C30 Hull 203. I bought it in 1997 with maybe 8” of water over the sole. The windows leaked. The first thing I did was put a garden hose in turn on the water till it came out in the boat turned it off unhooked the hose and emptied out the water. I had a big smile I never touched the keel bolts I ground it and cleaned it There was a 1/2 inch gap going about 16 inches from the front. I filled the gap with 5200 and glassed it over. In 2015 I replaced the A4 gas engine with a diesel. In 2018 I tried to go to the north channel in Lake Huron from Sandusky Ohio. I didn’t make it . About 20 miles north of Port Huron is a point called Kettle Point They call it Kettle Point because prehistoric trees are just under the surface they look like the bottom of a kettle. I had been motoring for two days and hadn’t studied the charts when I thought I was clear I turned right let out the jib. Was in heaven for 5 minutes then boom I saw 2 feet on my depth sounder then I was looking at the sky preying for big waves. I did get off and on my way for a short while then steam from below and I saw my spare 12 volt battery floating around. Called a May Day and got rescued by the Canadian coast guard they pumped me out. And took me to Grand Bend Ontario when I went sideways a gallon of antifreeze broke a hole in the muffler. Had to wait ten days then went back to Ohio, the insurance company repaired my keel by removing The keel from the hull . There was no particle board left just mush. They had to put space heaters under the stub To get it dry enough to glass. After that I had to get a survey and he put $1500 Value on my boat. So now I just have liability insurance . I’m not planning any big trips but I have islands close by and great sailing on Sandusky Bay

Congratulations and Best Wishes! I still love Cape Cod even though I haven't been in 50 years. My grandmother took me there in 1970 when I was 14 - The Summer of Love was still happening. I had a very different experience - I not only missed the forest for the trees, I didn't even see the trees. My somewhat moral grandmother was shocked by how many young women were not wearing bras. Every time she spotted one, she'd grab my arm and say, "Isn't that disgusting!" and my horny little straight boy got another look. I always agreed with her, but what I really meant was, "Thanks I might've missed that girl." If anything else was going on, I had no clue. I imagine I'll visit Cape Cod again in the next couple of years, probably anchor or moor off P-Town. And now I know what my courtesy flag should be. Thank you.

@@SailingIxion Thanks. PTown as I remember it looked about the same as in your video. (The pier was all wood and kind of rickety.) My (great)Uncle Bob Roman owned the Surfside Hotel (I think that was it. He had to take off a new top floor because it blocked someone's view). My grandmother and I stayed at her other sibling Anne's (Sverid) motel just over the line in Truro, Anne's son owned the place on the Provincetown side. (I guess the Romans and the Sverids were the Patels of 1970s Cape Cod.) Provincetown was gay back then, I remember my uncle mentioning it, I just didn't have a clue what that actually meant -- too busy being 14 years old and clueless. Hope your wedding was terrific.

Good job. And great talk about chemical and mechanical bonds. What I like when using epoxy to glue a fitting on, or fix something (like big holes in a sea kayak I repaired) is to have rough surfaces. Then if there's some 'issue' with the chemical bond, the epoxy has its 'fingers' into and underneath the surface. (As I'm sure you found out from your hair, the more surface area epoxy has to grab on to, the more tenacious it is.) What I've seen on too many videos are these types of connections that should be rough and ugly for a great mechanical bond, instead sanded smooth and pretty. On the outside? Sure, you don't want your fiberglass to grab and snag. But down in the bilge? You guys have your heads on straight. Good work. That is a lot of epoxy. Ever see one of your cups start to melt, deform and then begin smoking because the curing epoxy got too hot? I'm dreading the video where the intrepid amateur boat restorers are mesmerized looking at a plastic cup melting and smoking while behind them the whole boat.... Sorry. It's just too terrible.
@SailingIxion
@SailingIxion 2 года назад
Thank you for the compliment. We do our best to get things right the first time and like my father says, “not Mickey Mouse the fix”. (Not sure why Mickey is bad at fixing but that’s beside the point) Actually the first time I was testing and “playing” with epoxy I mixed it in a regular plastic Dixie cup and boy did it melt! Since we were laying so much glass and using so much epoxy we definitely kept a schedule so that the entire project didn’t go up in flames (literally). Honestly though, the hardest part was keeping air out of the laminate. A part of me wishes I had tried to vacuum bag the fix. If I had dropped the whole keel I definitely would have done that.

You can probably find as old as 88 that doesn’t have the wood core issue that causes the Catalina smile. But if you’re looking, find a tall rig, they perform better especially in light winds and be sure to get a survey. Don’t be fooled by a pretty paint job on the motor, bilge, or boat always get a survey.
