As a Canadian aviation engineer, I wonder why you chose a DeHavilland Dash 7 9PT6 engines!!!). Interesting as a glider.
@BenErikNess
@BenErikNess Месяц назад
I flew the Dash-7 with Widerøe in Norway in the early 80's and revisited the aircraft in Egypt 15 years ago with Petrolium Air. The performance was incredible, airborne in a split of a second... That really made an impact on me. On the other hand, it is very rarely modelled, and that appeals to me. So that means I had to design the plane myself! Why a glider? 4 engines (the nacelles are slowly in the making) with motors, and a complicated set of retracts on a powered model just made the project too complicated. So I opted for building it as a glider… More info on the building of the model here: forums.modelflying.co.uk/index.php?/topic/42170-pss-dash-7-dhc-7-build-blog/

@@BenErikNess very cool makes sense and yes rarely modeled so it made me curious. It was developed early 70s as aggressive STOL for projected Montreal Toronto corridor which didn’t really materialize. Replaced with Dash 8 Pw100 in 80s. Still being built as Dash 8-400 I think. I actually did engineering work on the PW150 which is on the 400. Look forward to seeing it with nacelles!

Hi Ben, I have a question: what sheet/plate you use as a guide/deflector on the output after it is cut? I mean as shown at 0:52 in your video. Is it some board with aluminium foil on one side? Name and source where to get if possible please. Nice & good detail on setup, very usefull.
@BenErikNess
@BenErikNess 4 месяца назад
First off all, thanks for the kind words! It's a painted sheet of metal, actually made for outdoors - to keep the water off the wall under a window. My idea was that the metal would help to cool down the depron after the cutting process. It does not have too much effect. However, it prevents the cut depron in curling up too much... So, it will work quite well without...

@@BenErikNess Ben, many thanks for so quick reply. I see, the purpose something similar as in Hilmar Lange video. I almost finished my build. Once more - I appreciate your advice. Will need to experiment to fine tune the setup. All the best. MR.
@BenErikNess
@BenErikNess 4 месяца назад
@@mrombit605 I did use 3 full sheets of depron to fine tune speed and heat to end up with a setup that gave me consistent quality of the sheets... Another experience was that the tension of the hotwire had to be much tighter than I first thought, during cutting. Do remember to slack the hotwire when turning it off - it will prevent it from snapping the second time you use it 🙂

If it cuts and there are a lot of very fine stringy fibers all over the surface, is the wire too cold or too hot, or am going too fast/slow? Any tip would be appreciated.
@BenErikNess
@BenErikNess 7 месяцев назад
It's a very good question! If the wire is too hot or the speed is too low could be the answer. To find that sweetspot took some time, with trial and error... However, when this happens the sheet gets slightly more stiff. I use 180 grid sandpaper and carefully rub the surface and the sheet becomes more soft and easier to shape.

There is something hypnotic about those ultra low-speed airliner models, they seem to fly at just the right scale speed. If only there was a larger indoor space to fly them without the constant need for tight circles. Maybe in a zero-wind day they could be made to fly outdoors, that would be quite the show.

I like indoor models because of more realistic scale speed. The key to determining scale speed is airplane lengths per second. Real life or model, it needs to be the same.

Well, depends how you see it. This venue is only 40x40 meters, quite small for this plane. So it's actually quite a challenge to fly it, I run out of space really fast, First and last turns has to be very coordinated and sharp in order to land nicely.
