I am a personal development coach and use the Internal Family Systems model (IFS) to help my clients make the changes they want to make to live the lives they want. I created this RU-vid channel to post videos of some of the ideas, tools, exercises, and workshops I use to help my clients. Videos in the Parts Work Practice playlist address what to expect in our pro bono sessions that help participants get to know their 'parts.' Videos in the Self-Led Project playlist include workshops and exercises that I use in my signature group coaching program.
"Great conversation! I'd love to hear more about recognizing the signs that you're nearing your limit before hitting 'defcon 3.' I often realize too late, and my 'meet the deadline' parts overpower my 'self-care' instincts. I know the sensible advice is to stop and go inward, but I could use a 'trick' to actually follow through on that."
Thank you Bill. This was really helpful and I have added it to my daily playlist labelled "Morning Courage." Different parts responded to the nature scenes and the slow meditative pace of your statements and suggestions. and by the end of the video I definitely felt more presence of Self.
I was glad to hear you say that you weren't comfortable with the term "boundaries". I feel the same way. The idea of boundaries comes up a lot in therapy and therapy courses I've been taking. Boundaries feels like less connection - like I'm putting up a wall between me and the people close to me. I prefer to think in terms of "needs". It's important to communicate your needs to have a healthy relationship. When someone tells me their needs and what's important to them, I feel empathy and a deeper sense of connection, and I have a better understanding of how I can contribute to our relationship.

I have been a part of Bill's IFS grp almost from inception. Fun to watch the development, Bill is phenomenal and successful at who he is and what he does. Yes, and Laurie assisting in a variety of capacities...her involvement does not go unnoticed. This podcast gives a deeper appreciation of who she is...would like to interject that we are in the Aquarius cycle, the current energies are moving toward shinin as your true self. Astrology is another facet of IFS, it is archetypal and fits.

As Laurie's mom, I have watched IFS and parts work play a huge role in her healing. She has used her skills to help me heal my own inner trauma. I can't wait to watch her journey!

Wonderful conversation, thank you! I'm currently half way through Newfield Networks ontological coaching training and IFS foundations training and it occurs to me that Self access is like the ultimate ontological function. So cool!
@billtierneycoaching1 I think just searching IFS content on RU-vid. Was thrilled to hear your background is very similar to mine. I was an introduction leader with landmark many years ago and am also in 12 step recovery with AA in addition to the ontological and IFS coaching. I also have taken mind-body coaching with Dr. Howard Schubiner for chronic pain and inflammatory illnesses like autoimmune issues. Very cool stuff!
I believed... 1. What was happening out there was causing my suffering 2. What was happening out there had to be managed and control to manage and control my suffering 3. Some emotions are just too painful to tolerate 4. The best I can hope for is a life without suffering.
I'm glad you lke it Autumn. I have found it useful to formalize the internal space and make it safe, familiar, and comfortable to meet with my parts when they need my attention or when I am curious about them. "Inside," until recently was undefined. Now, I go to a place on a cliff overlooking a valley in a local state park where I used to stop during long runs for grounding and meditation. I spent enough time there to vividly remember the setting. Now, I have that space inside me and can go there any time. The imagination is an amazing and powerful faculty.
Hey, great video, people my age and people from my "hometown" don't even understand anything like this and make me feel crazy for talking about it, but we do have polarities that need to be realized, and you help me understand :)
Yes, using this definition, acting from integrity means that thoughts, words, and actions are all inspired by Self or Self-led parts. "Out of integrity" would indicate the influence of activated and burdened parts.
I discovered IFS as a therapy client in 2016. I started coaching in 2011, mostly influenced by The work of Byron Katie and recovery using the 12 Steps. My career path included 21 years in retail grocery, 3 years in auto sales, 2 years in P&C insurance and 16 years as a mortgage originator.
This really stood out for me: "Having that internal sense of safety and welcome" - Alison Dyer. (In regards to the question: What is it like to live with IFS?)
@@billtierneycoaching1 so for most of my life I have had a lot of anger and mistrust towards the outside world (society). However through my (Self) work in the past six years I have started to realise (this year) that by far most of that anger and mistrust is actually in my inside world. It's my parts who have anger and mistrust towards mySelf. (But as a coping mechanism or adaptability mechanism I have externalised that anger and mistrust). So that sentence that Alison said really resonated with me because I sense that by continuing my (Self) work, by forgiving mySelf and trusting mySelf (as well as unburdening my exiles), I can achieve that "internal sense of safety and welcome". It's all about looking in... not out :)
It's kind of hard to put into words, but there is just something about, I guess, the connectedness between the three of you and the way you talk about IFS. Something very soothing and endearing. I have been on a journey of self recovery/discovery and healing for about 6 years now. I was introduced to parts work 2 years ago through EMDR (but that didn't last), but I have been learning about IFS now for a few weeks and in my discovery of IFS I stumbled upon you channel. IFS is making so much sense to me and the way you talk about IFS in your videos is teaching me even more/better on how my own parts function and how I can connect with them. In the Lesson 4 video you talk about the wednesday group meetings and you mention that they are open for all. I am very curious if I can join those meetings. Are those meetings still going on? Should I just send you and e-mail?
Such a great conversation!! Thank you for clarification that exiles are unburdened/updated a little at a time. I like the layer of the onion reference. Also, the image of bringing the values, standards and rules and beliefs of parts from our unconscious a little at a time for updating is fantastic. I got a lot out of the breakdown process of each part, Bill. Love the analogy of parts collaborating for the same goal with one part on either side of the boat trying to keep it from capsizing! Alison, thank you for sharing your caretaker part and collaborating parts with us!!
Hello. I loved the work! I have been trying to research for an insightful vid that educates the topics in this RU-vid vid! 👩⚕️ 👍Your explanation for sure reminds me of the channel of this awesome health enthusiast Dr Ethan! Dr Ethan's demonstrations are informative and I actually learned a lot for my practice! I recommend you watch his page out and give the health enthusiast a subscribe! 👉 #DoctorEthanMedLife
Really good. I have studied Cliff Barry’s Shadow Work model and there is so much overlap. Find the part, characterise it, get to know the part and regress the scene IE you weren’t born (probably) with this part, where has it showed up on your life before? I loved the honouring of the anxious part and seeing how it (I think) played an important manager role in an early chaotic childhood. Thank you 🙏🏻 I will be watching more!!
Thanks for the comment Louise. I love that the IFS model has taught me to be compassionate toward my parts. My entire system has softened now that it trusts me.
