Thanks for that, I loved it. I spent my childhood in Pukerua Bay, walked to Paekakariki along the beach/footpath a couple of times and travelled on that railway line twice a day to college and back - brought back some great memories!😊

We used to visit my dads parents in danniverke every Xmas so got to go through the gorge a fair few times. Us kids were quite scared, and dad knowing this, when it was quiet eg 6 in the morning he would go quite fast, just to make it even more scary 😳🤣

The seaviews gardens were lovely. There used to be a bird avairy, rotunda, music and other things up there!! The water tower changes colours at night! The old Trading Post is now a huge Mitre 10. The horse drawn carriage is returning to foxton soon. The forest has all been cut down near the Wake Boarding area sadly. The River Loop, Skate Park playground area and beach are lovely walks with my wee dog. Did you see the wharf down by the Boating Club? Another lovely area! ❤

Hmm As a cyclist who has retired I thought I might add a few comments on your commentary that may improve future ones. Firstly I do not find appealing introspective comments as you are travelling around. Comments like those about the folk song are much better presented. They do not sound like they are being presented by a wee kid that doesn't have much else to say. Sorry I don' t want to discourage you. I did find this a vast improvement on the video you did on the Manawatu Gorge bike trip. Comments about the old railway carriages being dumped at Taumaranui are also well done for example. Hope that might be some constructive input to someone who has not the courage to do such a presentation himself.

I'm not usually a reckless, trespassing law breaker but I love this route now and so do plenty of others. Cycled it a once when it was open to cars and trucks and it was terrifying and genuinely dangerous. Now its far safer than the heavily trafficked alternative Pahiatua track. The slips have mostly stabilized now that they are not being removed from the road and the encounter probability to rockfall is almost negligible due to the low use during wet stormy weather. This type of closure smells like apathetic risk aversion and low priority for funding walking/cycling projects. The large holes in the fence next to the intimidating signs seem to be tolerated but what a shame this can't receive a small investment to officially open an important connection. Hope your video can encourage some action. Closures are often for quite valid reasons but I would invite the small number of commenters from the "Tsk! Tsk! brigade" to relax about this one. It's really not that risky. Perhaps consider that rules are for the obeisance of fools and the guidance of the wise.

Chillax, all you safety freaks. There are more risks, with worse access, just about anywhere in the NZ bush. What about all the people drowned crossing rivers or fishing from small boats at sea? Are they all irresponsible, too? Tell you what, why don’t you try to get rugby banned? I’ll warrant you’re at more risk of injury playing a game of footie than you are cycling gently along the Old Gorge Road for 80 minutes.

It’s so refreshing to see a kiwi couple adventuring around and giving real facts and history, not all these sponsored influencers. We watch all your videos and when we travel around, and go to places you’ve beenwe always think about your R&D adventures and have a laugh. You always look like you’re having so much fun - love your cheeky attitude towards travel and signage and “closures.” Thanks for the great videos and good luck catching up to Bobby 😉

My understanding where the name Wainuiomata came from. After Teraparaha invaded Lower Hutt and the women and children fled over the hill into wainuiomata where they were found weeping. The translation is Tears of Mata, who was a Maori woman.

As a young teen in the mid 60s I visited my older married sister who lived in Ngongataha, made friends very quickly, it was the first time I ever drove a car (1950 Ford Prefect) I was 14 and even had my first romantic kiss there… yuk lol. There were places that tourists could go called Rainbow Springs and Fairy Springs where you could play with tame trout, some locals had a back yard with a small hot spring which some converted to cook food from the naturally heated volcanic underground, others built or constructed a private mineral bathing pool, very therapeutic, there was no place like it. Others my age took me to places where we could catch fish, mainly large Trout, was an amazing experience will never forget it.

I remember the go cart track at Pauatahanui when I was younger, it was known as Duck Creek. At Battle Hill there was a grassy open area by the stream, at the north end of the reserve where my dad's work would have their kids christmas party. We'd play games and Father Christmas would come with presents.
