OuRnB exists on two core principles. The protection of Rhythm & Blues, and the celebration of both its origins and the figures that transformed it into a foremost musical genre.
Bravo, this is one of the best on The Supremes yet, I would have like a little more of the frictions that came with the group, what makes legends most, but this is the best yet thank you, Standing in the shadows of The Supremes.
I don't understand why " Nothing But heartaches" didn't go number 1 I love that record, there are some silent and visual empty spots, with a tighter edit this should be on one of PBS "American experience" shows I see shows of people I and many people never heard of it's a total disgrace that nothing has been done on this group, a group showcased in the middle of the Civil rights era, while news stations were showing protests, dogs and fire hose being turned on Black people, then you turn on Ed Sullivan and see these awesome glamorous girls with Diana's perfect diction on TV, The Supremes are never giving credit for that as well.
Frank Wilson took the challenge of the Seventies Supremes and blazed them into history. MOTOWN, still stuck on this Diana Ross over the name when just call that version Supremes featuring Diana Ross.
Correction….. Lynda was not a “temporary replacement” for Cindy Birdsong while Cindy was on maternity leave. Cindy left the group and was replaced by Lynda Laurence. Lynda was signed to Motown as a member of The Supremes. Lynda did not come into The Supremes “temporarily.’ When Lynda joined the trio she was never introduced as Cindy’s “temporary replacement.”
She was only in the lineup officially from 1972-73 because Cindy was pregnant. So, although you are correct in that they never said she was temporary, considering the fact that Cindy did return to the lineup after having a child is what led me to say that. Hope this helps. Thanks for the comment and clarification.
Luther and Will Downing are my musical father and uncle, in terms of the yin of Downing's masculine baritone voice and the yang of Vandross' tenor voice is anything but amazing. Maaaannn his music was my soundtrack of my life
Thank you for making this truly about "The Supremes" and not about Diana Ross. Especially, thanks for recognizing the incredible velvet-voiced Jean Terrell and her nearly-four years as lead singer. Diana and Jean were the only two officially appointed lead singers of The Supremes. After Jean left, the group had no releases for nearly two years and was eventually refashioned as an "Ensemble Act" with Mary Wilson very evenly sharing leads with Scherrie Payne and (later) Susaye Greene.
Thank you! Admittedly, I am a Diana Ross fan, but what a lot of people miss about the supremes is that each member brought something to the table. Although I could have touched on that more, your comment makes me feel i’ve done well enough. :)
@@ournb5811 but the truth of the matter is that it was Diana Ross’ unique beautiful voice on all the singles that made The Supremes and it was her charisma with that “extra special something “ that she brought into the group of beauties they were unique there was a lot of girl groups back then but their talent class style looks surpassed the rest they were really THE # 1 American group of the 1960s only the Beatles had more hits but they were British ,Elvis was the number one solo artist ,it was Elvis The Beatles and The Supremes wow ! Three little girls from the ghetto were 3 Black American Princesses back in those days in the 1960s it was unheard of The Supremes was the first of everything …………..they broke all kinds of records they were truly Supreme and everyone love them and knew theme they were a household name
Just a few things: -I misspoke in the beginning, they were a quartet in 1958, so there were four members not five. -I left out More Hits By The Supremes, which was released in 1965, mainly due to time. Hope you all enjoy, I have been a Supremes fan since I was ten. I know all their number ones by heart. This was a labour of love. 🫶🏾
Can we please get the Dinah Washington video back or maybe a revamped version??!! So many legends that you cover looked up to her and copy her singing style. Love your work ❤️
Cindy is the first R&B singer in history to leave a group for a rival girl group. ( Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles vs. The Supremes) Sangin' vs. Singing
@@nutinman4uDefinitely! I personally think The Supremes and Motown at large made black music for the masses, while LaBelle and other black owned labels had an emphasis on vocals as well as crossover appeal. Thank you for your comment 🫶🏾
Whitney Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963 - February 11, 2012), was an American singer and actress. Nicknamed ‘The Voice’, she was one of the bestselling music artists in history with 220 million records sold worldwide. She is the only artist to have seven consecutive number-one singles on Billboard Hot 100 from “Savin’ All My Love” to “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” since 1988. Houston began singing in a church as a child and became a background vocalist while in high school. With the guidance of Arista Records chairman Clive Davis, Houston signed to the label at the age of 19. Her first two studio albums, Whitney Houston (1985) and Whitney (1987), both peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 and are among the best-selling albums of all time. Houston’s third studio album, I’m Your Baby Tonight (1990), yielded two US number-ones including the title track and “All The Man That I Need”. Houston’s rendition of “Star Spangled Banner” at the Super Bowl XXV in 1991 received widespread media coverage. Houston made her acting debut with romantic thriller film The Bodyguard (1992), which became the tenth-highest grossing film to that date. Its soundtrack won the Grammy Award for Album of The Year and became the bestselling soundtrack album of all time. The lead single “I Will Always Love You” won the Grammy award and remains as the best-selling physical single by a woman in music history.
Sam Salter has the best unique voice I've ever heard, ultimately he's the best singer to me. I definitely love his stylist singing unique sound. This video was well put together I enjoyed it so much thank you for this, I appreciate your hard work on it.
If she had a bigger label and management behind her, she could have had more commercial success. She was/is stunningly BEAUTIFUL and could SING. There was a whole package there that no one really took advantage of. I think Straight Up had crossover appeal all over it and was very much in touch with that time. It's baffling it never crossed over to pop and didn't make much of a dent on the R&B charts. In fact, it was a bigger international hit, particularly in the UK where it peaked at #11 - her biggest hit in that country. MCA didn't know how to promote their black artists, but Mary J. Blige was an exception at this time. Mary had good management behind her and had already cemented herself as the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, so all the MCA had to do was care and invest in her success.
I followed Chante since Loves taken over and i definitely kept up with every cd single maxi single and so forth....Like you mentioned MCA couldnt and wouldnt promote her correctly....if they really took the time to hire people to help and not short cut her then we would have....More of her....no pun intended but its the music business and its a tough ride to be on
I didn’t realize how much influence she had actually I just forgot because those looks alone were iconic and groundbreaking around the way girl shhhhh ✨Miss Jones deserve her props ❤🫶
Miss Jones sounds like she’s effortlessly singing sorry to say, but I never really liked Mary J’s voice…..no offense to her or anyone. I’m entitled to my own opinion.
Not until he heard what me and Ron G was cooking up wit the MixTapes. Gi listen back to the "original" Whats the 411 album. Now THAT album is sultry and Anita Baker jazzy...Puff heard me and Rons stuff and "the remix" was born. #dontplaywitme
David Ruffin is one of those dudes who had a conversational singing voice. A voice that is out of this world. David Ruffin despite having a substantial amount of problems had one of the best voices I have ever heard.
Johnny Mathis, Andy Williams, Jerry Vale, Jack Jones, Tom Jones, Englebert Humperdinck, Al Martino, Lou Raws, Eddie Fisher, Bobby Vinton, Nell Carter, Glen Campbell, Freddie Mercury, Pebo Bryson, Steve Perry, Mickey Thomas, Mike Reno. George Michael, Glen Jones, Tevin Campbell, Perry Como, Michael Bluble. James Ingram, Howard Hewett, Sam Cooke, Donny Hathaway, Ronnie Dyson, Kenny Loggins & Josh Groban, Tony Bennett, Ronnie Milsap, Larry Gatlin, Steve Warner, Vince Gill Lee Greenwood, Johnny Gill, Bing Crosby & also Luther Vandross. The great voices in music.
Trey Songz is a good singer but most definitely Sam salter way better. To be honest with you I thought Trey Songz was trying to be like Sam Salter and I said to myself he must have heard sam salter sing because it seemed to me he was trying to replicate sam salter singing style.
