I recently moved my family from the suburbs to my late fathers mountain home he built. We went from a small apartment to 26 acres and I am in a bit over my head to say the least. Decided to make this channel to track the progress of the random projects I attempt on the property.

Hope you enjoy!

If you had shortened the strap...you would have had no issue....strap that long puts the weight to high on the tractor. Also, 8n tractors are far too light on the front.

If you mentioned it, im sorry i missed it. But are you using an overrun clutch on the pto? You definitely should! Also i had the same issue with grass winding up on the shaft. I cuy a piece of 4" drain tile to act as a shield. Worked great!

If you still have the 8N, get on Yesterday’s Tractors forum. They have lots of info and help for 8N owners. They also sell parts and manuals. The N Club forum is exclusively 8N stuff and full of information. I hope you didn’t blow a head gasket or worse when tractor overheated.

Mix in some Marvels per the instructions on the jug for the next 6 months of gas fill ups. If it isn't worn out rings, your rings will become compliant again, reseal and your smoke will go away (and your tractor will be happy).

I just ordered this a couple of days ago. Thank you for helping me decide, especially which buckets to order. I was already leaning towards that 24 inch for shifting gravel, and the tapered one was intriguing, but I might not have listened to the inner voice had I not seen your video. That thumb seemed pretty dubious too. There has to be a better option! Anyway, thanks a lot for sharing your experiences.

Years ago I was having an issue with my 8n where it would start but would stall out after a minute or so. A friend of mine who does small engine repair told me before starting it to take a hammer and give the carburetor a couple of whacks. There is a cork ball float in the carb that gets stuck and the taps on the carb free it up. It works for me! I keep a stubby hammer in the tool box.🙂

I bought the harbor freight version. I was wondering what the mounting ear specs were to see if I can adapt a bucket for my needs. What is the pin size, pin center spacing, and width between the mounts? I emailed jansen and they wouldnt give me specs. Simply told me it wouldnt fit my machine.

Brakes are cheap and easy to fix on an 8N. Change the seals too. Brakes are used in primary steering with any tractor. You really need some front wheel weights. You may have to buy a parts tractor to get them. You could also fill the front tires with water. An old gym weight set can be used to mount on the front bumper, they could even be bolted to the front rims. I have rear wheel weights on the rear wheels of my 8N and they weigh 400# each. A Sherman 3 speed transmission makes a very safe tractor, especially in reverse gear. They are quite expensive on ebay but are well worth the $1000 or so. The 2 speed Sherman does not have compound low, so stay away from that one. I also welded a dozen weld-on hooks in various places on the boom so that a purchase can be made very easily on odd items using chains.

A lot of people have converted the 6 volt system over to 12 volt. I recommend keeping 6 volt system as long as possible. If you have generator problems, take it to a competent auto electric repair shop and have it repaired. I have a ‘51 project 8N that was converted to 12 with home made alternator bracket that caused the lower alternator bracket to pinch the lower radiator hose nearly shut and it had a belt that was way to small. I replaced with new alternator and universal brackets, had to find a belt that would fit(42X5/8), and a volt meter instead of an ammeter. All this cost about $200 and was a pain to get the belt aligned(Chinese made stuff is never right). I have a 1949 8N that has been our family since 1966, I completely rebuilt the engine last year an have kept the electrical 6 volts and it runs like a top. I you have your fuel and ignition system maintained right and the starter is good, even though 6 volt turns over slow, the engine should fire right up. I see you also have the dreaded leaky axle seal problem which is common on most pre 1950 8Ns. That’s probably why your brakes don’t work. They have been converted from dry brakes to wet oil soaked brakes. That’s the next restoration phase on my ‘49. Make sure the left hood to dogleg join is kept clean, this is a common rust out area. I think the radiator overflow tube is on the left side and over the years excess coolant causes this area to rust from spray.
@jp3eku
@jp3eku 10 месяцев назад
You're 100% correct. Both my 2N and 8N are both 6 volt. I wouldn't have bought them if they weren't... too many electrical wired nightmares when converting to 12 volt. They're junk. Keep it simple and original exactly how it was supposed to be.

I have such an excavator. The disadvantage is that the wheels and the support feet are attached at a 45 degree angle. It can be difficult to load onto a trailer. If the wheels were not inserted at an angle but at a 90 degree angle, the width could be varied better. The cylinder under the excavator is also a nuisance, it should be on top. But the excavator is very solidly built and works well. In 2 hours I unpacked and assembled this excavator.

The 5 ft. Model 12 Bush Hogs were used on many 8Ns without any problem and they had 1/4” thick decking on them. We ran one for over 30 years with no problem. Bush Hog was sold in 2008 and had been re- decked twice. 8N got complete engine rebuild in 2022 and is still going.

The 8N only has around 21hp PTO. It can handle that mower fine in lower grass but you can hear it bogging down and almost dying several times in that tall stuff. I've seen people run 6ft decks on an 8N, but not in grass that tall. He would probably be happier with a 4ft though. Wouldn't have to stop as much.
