I really enjoyed this podcast. I’ve said it before, Dan would make an excellent teacher. Speaking from experience of 20+ years teaching at higher Ed. And his ability to reflect on his growth. Just great stuff. Much appreciated.
I was surprised when mark kenyon asked dan what was something that was crazy that other hunters wouldnt believe or something like that he didnt mention that buck grunting. That was absolutely wild
The big ones are the smartest. They know what gives them away. It's like a human. Human would mark the 4 corners of their property not their living and bedroom
Your thoughts on out of state hunting are mine exactly. Not many folks from states with rolling hills and flat ag land are going to want to come hunt the mountains here and beat themselves up chasing ghosts. 😂
I was listening to a podcast of JD last night. He said he likes 280-ish fps and if faster adds weight to arrows until it slows down to around 280ish. He currently shoots 530 grains to get that speed. They thought the arrows acted erratically above that speed. How about that.
What I've learned from several years of hunting public land: during the rut, just find a decent spot and sit all day. Don't jump around; don't get out of the tree; just freakn' sit and embrace the suck. I've seen more deer and better deer doing this than jumping around all season. I also get great mid-day movement (10:00am - 2:00pm) doing this.
Jesus Christ, I just cannot stand to listen to Truth From The Stand, the host talked wayyyy too much. Shut the hell up sometimes, quit telling hunting stories the whole time.. for instance when you have Nathan Killen on I’m listening to hear Nathan talk, not this goofball.
I have 3 sons, 2 of which are still in school. They all play basketball. They only had the opportunity to Hunt 2 Saturdays all of deer season the first 2 in archery. My best friend has 4 sons, 3 of which are still in school they play football they only had 2 Saturdays in archery the first and last Saturday. Sundays are different we have every Sunday available. Times have changed sports season are longer practice season's last longer and start earlier. Sunday hunting is needed in my world.
KS resident here. I live 2 miles from a 6k acre wma. I’ve walked every inch of it over the last 6 years. I could count on 1 hand the number of trail cams I’ve seen. Banning them was a farce and we are being lied to about the reason. Love the show
Also, Hunter numbers are going down because deer camp is over. Back when all those people were ‘passive’ hunters and went for deer camp 3-5 days a year. That’s all over. Now it’s all very active hunters so it feels like it’s more crowded because these guys put more time in.
Instead of entertaining constant conspiracies on their intent on banning cams why not think ahead. People used to run 0-3 cameras. Then it was a few more with some peopling running dozens. Now a lot more people are running dozens as they get cheaper. Then take in tech advancements. 360 degree cams with live feed. In 5 years your public land will be littered with cameras that do 360 live feed. Every single point, saddle, scrape will have multiple cams. People will log in to seeing you in your tree. It’s coming. I run dozens and it’s fun but man eif everyone ran dozens, I’m not sure how much I’d enjoy going out. So I’m slowly moving away from it.
Bedding-don’t waste your time trying to find specific beds..don’t humanize animals...Every day the wind is different the temperature the humidity, the interactions with other deer and humans..too many variables..focus on travel Routes not beds
Hunting pressure on public land has increased exponentially! Anyone who says hunter numbers are dwindling is full of BS. In my area the bowhunters are getting squeezed into smaller places due to all the dog walkers, mnt bikers, hikers ect ....
Hunt where giants exist. Eureka. Good for you getting the access you did buddy. I mean that…we know it ain’t easy…but next level? A good bit of skill with people, the right time and place, a bit of luck. That’s the formula.
Why he is he the only famous successful hunter that preaches the moon guide? Oh yeah cause he owns it. And it’s total bs so nobody but him cares to talk about it lol
@@paulwakefield1015 I mean will it hurt? Maybe maybe not. But it’s definitely waisting time and energy on something that doesn’t work. Unless someone is prepared to argue and defend the position that moon phases are higher priority than weather/feeding patterns, it’s useless. If the weather and timing is right for spot, you should be there regardless of the moon. And if it’s not right, you shouldn’t be there regardless of the moon phase. So unless someone is prepared to say the moon phase overrides the weather (spoiler alert, nobody is) it’s pointless to even consider the moon phase. Which is also why nobody without a financial interest in the con ever talks about it
@@JimbojohnjI would say if he has had succes after planning around the moon, then it works for him. If you haven't had success, then it doesnt work for you. Nobody is forcing you to follow the moon guide. Its just an option for hunters to look at. All kinds of hunters look at all kinds of different things that may influence deer behavior. If any of them lead to success for a hunter, who the hell are we to say it "doesnt work"? Who has all the answers when it comes to deer hunting? Nobody, and that includes you bud! If something someone believes in gives them the confidence to hunt harder and longer and it leads to success, IT WORKED!! 😉
53:42 he hasn’t left the main 1500 acres. But he shifts based on who he relates to. If his entire doe group has been killed, he may not move at all. There’s no risk of inbreeding #whitetail101
I like that talk about shooting less. Shooting too much has caused a lot of issues for me over the years with TP. If anything I’m best to go fling a few arrows and nothing more, a couple times a week. Shooting 50 arrows an evening causes so many issues for me.
Regerts??? Lol. Great talk about having and making time for hunting. Between weather, vacation time, holidays and family events it's pretty tough sometimes
