All your electronics, anything made with rare earths and lithium, even steel, most of your clothing, etc are all made outside the USA (in whole or at least components) and imported. So if you don't want to pay the Trump tariffs, you can just do without all those things, right? Except it is worse than that, because last time DJT put tariffs on imports, the nations making our imports (like China) responded by putting tariffs on things made in the USA, which hurt jobs in the USA that were producing those exports.

Surely the tax each family would pay would depend on how much in the way of imported goods it bought. I don't know exactly what the US produces and what it needs to import. I know that lower market end clothing from SE Asia is cheaper than US produced clothing. In some countries, that disparity Jess completely wiped out the local clothing manufacturers. If the customers had to pay a sizeable tax on it, they might choose to buy locally produced soft goods. It would drive up costs for families, but also be a shot in the arm for the US industry.

Well, technically it would be a sales tax, given it'd be tacked onto the sale price of goods. Now, if they were forced to break down the other costs for items like tariffs, people would see it more. (Also, there are people who think we should do away with income tax and have a national sales tax, but they're not seeing how rich people don't consume as much as poorer people, so it'd still be hitting lower incomes a lot harder. Or a flat tax with no loopholes. I still can't argue this one with my dad that it's not a great idea. Then again, he pretty much lalalas and talks over me when I try, so...*shrug*)
I don't think the former President has a clue about the way that tariffs actually work. Anything that is directly relevant to middle- and lower-middle-class citizens is an unknown to this man. For example, he thought one needed to show personal ID in order to buy bread. It's very unlikely HE has ever had to buy bread himself. Just another (admittedly small) reason why he is unfit for the office he seeks. Vote BLUE, through and through.
actually Trump said in a speech recently he wants to end income taxes and raise a national sales tax, 🤔 I believe that is what they are referring to in that comment.
