It's Albany. It was settled right where it is in 1614. It's the only original thirteen colony city that's still operating under the same charter and everything. Those other places didn't become part of the USA until way later or don't exist anymore. Those other existant candidates for America's hometown don't have nothing on Albany.
I have very mixed feelings about John Brown. Every time I hear the details of his raid on Harper's Ferry I'm like "Why didn't you think this through, dude?" John Brown's raid reminds me of the People's Crusade prior to the first crusade: An impressive display of religious fervor, but no planning because the leaders figured God would do the whole planning thing. Both ended in terrible failure, but they set the stage for the American Civil War and the ultimate end of Slavery in the country and the People's Crusade set the stage for the Prince's Crusade to eventually take Jerusalem. I don't think the two events are morally equivalent, but they do illustrate the limits of zealotry.
Was there a humorous wasteland (factories and railroads gone, bars and pool halls untouched) behind him, from GA to SC? Yes. I think the reason its so hard for " old money south" to beleive that the civil war solderis faught for " slavery" as opposed to " fighting for their country is because there are great great grand parents who passed down stories, I remember being facinated by the cival war as a small child and NO ONE out of every connection I had in mississippi EVER EVER said they cared one way or the other about slaves or black people. My mother grew up in seperated water fountans, my Father just celebrated his 102 birthday so its like my father remembers his great grand father who faught in the battle of shilo telling him stories directly and of course his father and grand father also told him stories and none of them were ever about slaves or slavery. Untill leaving Mississippi I never even heard of the concept of the civil war being faught over slavery ... keep in mind mississippi banned slavery officialy in March 16, 1995 , the town I grew up in was and old Civil War Hospital town and as kids we would find abanonded grave markers all over the place both north and south. I can only speak for myself but having grown up in a small town in mississippi none of the old people ever EVER talked about salvery as the reason and I mean real old people ... again I will say it one more time I never heard of slavery being the " reason" that confederates faught and died was for black people. its so impossible for me to beleive growing up in that world that I dont think any amount of facts could ever change my mind. just because I heard the stories and grew up in a complete speration of black people from white people. .... Now My Dad was very much not into " whites are better than blacks" and he told me a story of one time him and his friends were going to the movies and the theater would not let their black friend go so none of them went to the movies. but my dad also grew up in a house with big holes in the sub floor in Memphis TN being the oldest of 16.
