Hey guys, my wife and I have been getting into bowfishing over the last couple of years and your videos have been a huge help to us in finding places to go. I was wondering if you had any tips for going after needle nose gar on the St. Johns and Crescent Lake? March and April seem to be the best time to go because of the spawn, but are there any specific areas or habitats you are looking for when you go after them.
@jeffoesterling6745
@jeffoesterling6745 Год назад
first: thanks for watching !!!! needle nose gar are the most FUN. They do start spawning in March & April, generally based on water temperature. Issues with Crescent Lake and St Johns River over the last couple of years .... the water is DARK, chocolate . since we bowfish in the daytime, it makes visibility and generally WIND an issue. Crescent Lake is huge but in the past, we have got a lot of big ones,,,,, hunt the edges in shallow water ... the St Johns River, same issue, DARK, we generally try at low tide in canals and smaller side channels due to the color of the water. Since we don't fish at night, we don't know if visibility is better with lights or worse. Good Luck

@@jeffoesterling6745 10-4, thanks for the reply! Have you ever had any luck going for needle nose out at Rodman? The water there has been clear the last couple of years at least. The Tilapia have been really good there this year as well.

@@ColeSchreiber-k2k not so much for nnose. Have seen and gotten some but not many. Yes, We're hitting rodman almost every week, only semi clear water we have found this year. There was a bowfishing tournament there on 3/11, since then, everything is hard to find. It's been cold overnight though so we're hoping it will get better. We've only seen 3 nnose the last two weeks there. Was out wed with some family at rodman and they managed to get 4 FL gar but it was WINDY and the water was only 68. Saw nothing in the river. Good luck and maybe see you there !!

We put in at the marina and hang a left,. All the way to propagation and then all the side channels, generally run out of steam after 3-4 corners. Did really well this year (not posted yet) during the spawn by the old rail road bed. Tons of weeds, which makes it tough for trolling,. Do you have any tips on how to get better other than going out and shooting ?
@jeffoesterling6745
@jeffoesterling6745 3 года назад
make sure your bow set up is correct first... your arrow should hit straight into the fish ... if it lands sideways and too straight up or down, then adjustments need to be made to your arrow rest. throw a plastic water bottle in the yard and start with that ... when you can consistantly hit where you are aiming, move it further out - practice, practice -- then go to water and remember that you no longer can aim AT the fish (unless it's actually floating on top). In water, you have to allow for depth, clarity and distance of your target ... In water, you MUST always aim lower than the fish ....takes a lot of practice to figure out how deep they are, how fast they are traveling. Trust me, you will always miss more than you are shooting at .... I've been shooting for 50+ years and still miss most of what I shoot at ... good luck and happy hunting. thanks for watching and practice, practice, practice

Do you have any tips for bowfishing during the day? I really love your videos
@jeffoesterling6745
@jeffoesterling6745 3 года назад
daylight is very challenging ... water clarity, wind and sun all play a part ... unlike night fishing, all of the above matters .... daytime bowfishing the fish "see" you coming .... our favorite sites from the past year are dark water this year, which makes it near impossible to bowfish ... but on the flip side ,,, very few "loud boats" and no bugs in your face ... keep the sun to your back and when possible, drift with the wind ... as always, day or night ,,, aim low and shoot lower ... we make it look easy because my wife edits out ALL the misses ... good luck and keep watching thanks

@jeffoesterling6745
@jeffoesterling6745 4 года назад
hubby & I have used a bunch of different kind ... currently using a cajun sucker punch with a canister reel and a ps2 with canister. We have and do use the push button reels on occasion. They work good for smaller fish (gar, tilapia etc) ... We mostly use the canister reels because we get into big gar and catfish that weigh 35 lbs or better so the canister reels work better because the lb test is heavier but we do break that from time to time also. The arrow point is the most important item. Something that twists quickly and is ready to go for that next shot ... hubby has the power and likes the longer ones that penetrate deeper ... My bow is probably only 30 lb and my point has shorter barbs that twist with a spin of the arrow ... we both do lose fish sometimes because not deep enough, etc. The best thing to do set yourself up with a cheap garage sale bow, buy a reel and get out there and have fun. Hint: aim low (it takes some getting used to) you will miss ALOT - thanks for watching!!
