I'm not a musician but I grow up watching Mike playing just like this. His confidence and groove was definitely an inspiration, he was the cool guy me and my friends aspired to be.
Hey great vid , I'm Lol now cause I just watched a Sabian video about Sabian AAX Xplosion hi hats and Mike rips it good but the end kills it , he says quote..... I think I just found my new favourite hats. Yet this video looks like he doesn't have 1 AAX cymbal anywhere ? Lol
His style started to kind of change with Derek, being a little more leaned towards mainstream jazz-blues and more mainstream rock. When Jordan came in, his style started to get more shreddy and metal (till this day). For me personally his style with Kevin spoke to me the most being completely unique and having a mystical quality to it.
