When I started this channel I was exploring interesting "insider" aspects of life in New York City. Now that I've moved to Northern California the essay topics have shifted, though I still retain a focus on pop culture--especially as it relates to the theatre and classic film. I also chronicle my travels and life in California. Regardless of the topic I'm here to be entertaining and fun.
He was a master. The best in Hollywood fashion What a shame MGM was so cheap and narrow minded to mainly shoot in black and white and we don't get to fully enjoy Adrian's art
In 1939, all of a sudden it seems, all the studios started doing a lot more color. Something must have occurred around 1938 that made Technicolor more accessible and cost efficient. But by 1940 Adrien was transitioning out of movies.
@@MichaelDJ68 color exploded in the 20s it preceded sound. So it was around. But all studios limited to only producing less than 8 films in color per year. I saw one in the late 30s with Carole Lombard. Very bad film no sense making it in color yet they did. Why??? When other great films would have been spectacular in color than cheap ass black and white. I guess they didn’t have too much vision as they gave themselves credit for
@@castanedagus Yes, but two strip Technicolor wasn't the greatest. Three strip technicolor by 1933 was good, but difficult to light and deal with on set with those huge cameras as well as expensive.. It worked beautifully and easily for animation, and is probably the real reason Walt Disney's :"Flowers and Trees" won an Oscar. Maybe it was possible to make everything in color, but it wasn't that easy or cheap. Studios were trying to release a movie a week in those days.
@@MichaelDJ68 I still think they were narrow minded and could have made more in color. Grabó was never shot in color. And Shirley Temple only made one Jean Harlow was shot in color so it was around and more could have been made. But they were making tons of money anyway shooting cheap black and white so why bother with expensive color.
I have Loved Mae for years. One year I went as Mae one Halloween and made my gown and hat and my Bestie went as W. C. Fields...we were a sensation on Santa Monica Blvd. and even made the local news!!!
Michael, That was a fun visit with Mae West. I recall seeing Mae West at the first showing of "Sextette" It was a preview presentation and there were cards to fill out after the film with any comments from the Audience. Mae had such a happy smile, she looked fabulous.
Wonderful video. I was there, but I don’t remember any of it I was only two years old with my grandmother and aunt. I love ❤️ and miss you grandma and aunt Marie.
Aqui no Brasil saíram poucos filmes dele em DVD, mas consegui quase todos com colecionadores. Muito bom ator! Saudades de bons e velhos tempos, que não voltam mais...
Wow!! A very homoerotic doco! The scenes from the gym were hot! Buster Crabbe is sexy!! I love watching films of pre-code homoerotic scenes. It's like you don't get to see full on nudity, but the pretense to it is what makes it so hot, and sexy.. Yummy 😊😊
Thank you SO much for this! I was 9 when I visited the Fair multiple times while living in CT (yep, that makes me 70 now). This magical childhood experience will always stay with me me.
It means films made before the Production Code, which started in 1934. The Production Code had a long list of things you couldn't say and show in a movie. It broke down in the 1960s and then was replaced by the current ratings system.
It’s worth mentioning that Howard Hawks made one of his two greatest westerns at Republic. I could be wrong, but I also think that either Hawks or Christian Nyby made the sing from another world at Republic.
You probably know that’s a playwright Clifford Odets to the play called the big knife. Robert Aldrich made it into a movie with Jack Palance. It’s a thinly disguised critique of Harry Cohn of Columbia pictures. Isn’t Cohn the guy that became famous when he said he knew a movie was too long when his ass started to hurt?
Can you tell us about which movie company released the Flash Gordon series of cereals. As you know these were showing every Saturday morning along with the regular movies. Buster Crabbe starred in a lot of them, remember he was Flash Gordon, he was Billy the Kid, etc.. When I was a kid living in Chicago every Sunday morning, community carpet with host an hour, long show that featured episodes of flash Gordan
As a fanatic cinephile, I love this video of a dream vacation that I would like to have. Seriously thinking of coming down for this festival in 2025 and seeing all the sites you recorded here. Thanks so much.
Also, this is a video I made of the festival in 2022, which shows some other venues and sites you might visit: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lBeRPm8rIbc.htmlsi=OHSSMryF2befqwVl
I just purchased this dummy for $25. His eyes don’t bounce back when string is pulled, they only shift left when I hand manipulate them to the right. And the mouth doesn’t bounce/move either. Looks like it was a rubber band inside for mouth and clearly dry rotted. Do you know how to fix the eyes at least? Aside from that his paint is FANTASTIC. Only missing shirt/collar and tie
In the description below the video I list the website for Kevin Detweiler who fixes these puppets and fixed mine. He'll return it to you better than new with an improved-long lasting mechanism.
The brand destroyed itself due to caving to diversity. I worked for them 2003-2005, that was the beginning when people starting complaining about the company not being diverse enough. The regional manager at the time said they we had to hire people who were not white and were not typical Abercrombie types ( which just meant, not attractive). So we did that and we actually had sales go down bc a lot of people came in literally to see the attractive employees. The clothes were actually good quality and looked nice imo but the major draw was the image of very attractive people.
I use iMovie for editing and there is a filter option called "Film Noir" believe it or not. Then I can pre-crop the clip to a square--pre-widescreen format.
Maltese Falcon 1941 Double Indemnity 1944 Laura 1944 Murder, My Sweet 1944 Detour 1945 Mildred Pierce 1945 Big Sleep 1946 Gilda 1946 Out of the Past 1947 Third Man 1949 Sunset Blvd 1950 In a Lonely Place 1950 The Big Heat 1953 Kiss me Deadly 1955 COLOR Leave her to heaven 1945 Desert Fury 1947
One that comes to mind in the color category I would recommend, "Chinatown" Faye Dunaway and Jack Nickelson auntie cleanse the palate from all the heavy themes and dark characters "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" Rachael Ward, Carl Reiner and Steve Martin. Who could forget classic lines like "Mizs mal-mam-ma-hey...Hey! Let's go dancing! You put on your black dress, I'll shave my tongue!" Or "Aha! That will give me four hours to wash and press your pajamas"
Oh yes, CHINATOWN. I was just sticking to the 1940s and 1950s. After that, Film Noir is only a now and then occurrence. I haven't seen DEAD MEN DON'T WEAR PLAID in a long time--I should revisit that one.
This may be controversial but I include The Thin Man as actually film noire "light" with Hammett-based characters and plot. Murder. Detective hero. While other female roles fit the femme fatale trope, so does Nora in many ways (she definitely isn't a "good girl"! That role is filled by Dorothy). The urban setting, witty dialogue, some disorienting camera angles... You get the idea. Many of my favorites are on your list. Citizen Kane, Maltese Falcon (Bogart version - the earlier 1931 version is nowhere as good), Laura, Gilda. Sunset Boulevard, Third Man. Double indemnity. One thing about them is you can watch them over and over again and always discover something new.
8:31 NO TRESPASSING Punishable of up to a year in jail and or $10,000.00 dollar fine" But stealing up to $999 of stuff from stores is fine these days in SF.
Like the video overall, but if this building at 1:37 that was once Ernie's restaurant was never used in the film, either the interior or the exterior, why bother showing it? It's like other videos showing the exterior of an apartment building in Greenwich Village in Manhattan that was shown for a few seconds countless times in the Friends series but never actually used, all the scenes in the series were filmed in LA studios.
Why bother showing Ernies? Because it was a real place anyone could go to, even though they had to recreate it at the studio for the film. Why not show it? It's all about what it looks like now.
Understood. The Brockbank apartments building which still looks virtually the same and Fort Point with the view of the Golden Gate Bridge which is also virtually the same except for the fence are my favorites. 👍 So many iconic movies and TV shows filmed in this city, it pains me to see what has happened to it over the past decade.😖
