This presents work of composer Ron Pellegrino, longtime pioneer in the electronic arts of sound and light since its birth in the 60s to the present day. The collection of over 400 videos includes his latest pieces from emergent and generative systems that integrate sound and light that simultaneously emerge from the same much massaged patch. Also included are videos of decades of road shows in USA and abroad when his public performances wrapped local artists of all stripes in his visual music systems of video, film, and lasers. You will find performance examples of decades of research leading to his personal visual music ragas for laser animations. You will find pieces from his early research with the Moog synthesizer when he was writing a log of his findings that became the first published book on the modern day synthesizer, a book used globally wherever a Moog synth was found. The video compositions cover the gamut from "soup to nuts" as a friendly critic was heard to say.

I was into that back in the 70s. I went to all of the clubs in Manhattan, Queens and Long Island where they had bands. You didn't need to worry about having friends, you just partied with the ones that were there. But really, free form dancing is like telling a story about where it's at, that is if you have ever been there!

I have come close to making something like this.. infact this is inspiring me to go deep in and.. I see and recognize the various waves and interference wave patterns from svideo... In Max 8.. I just am not in control enough with the various wave states to be this creative yet.. I just discovered svideo.. visuals a few weeks ago.. 😊

Music is the creation of musical patterns which have, height, width, depth, length, breadth, the spacing of spaces between notes, there is the length of note, pitch of the note, strength of the note, and we as humans sing music, and fall under it's spell. This is all intregral, and unique to each individual piece of music, and songs that are sung, and there are millions kinds of music, and also there are millions of stars, constellations, galaxies too!!! For me, I can close my eyes, and take in the pattern of the music, and then track that pattern back to it's origins it's home world/planet, the earth is comprised of many, many dimensions, and the way I get around the galaxy/multiverse is by hearing music of hundreds of styles, and then accessing those dimensions by way of the music, and out into the stars, constellations, galaxies, and I love traveling interdimensionally with music as well.

Hello! I’m not sure if this will actually reach you, but I have learned of this piece from a book recommended to me by my clarinet professor. “New Directions for Clarinet” by Phillip Rehfeldt included a list of pieces for clarinet and electronics and pieces for clarinet and another instrument (excluding piano) which also included your piece. I have been searching for pieces with this theme to possibly perform in my Senior Project/Recital in Fall 2021 as a Science in Music major with a music technology/composition minor. Out of a long list of pieces, this was one of only a few that I could actually find a recording or any information on, and I happen to really enjoy it. I noticed in your description that this was pretty much a piece for you. Would there be any way to gain access to this awesome piece or gain some insight into your compositional process, especially working with the synthesizer, to maybe influence my own approach to a project like this? I greatly appreciate your time if you see this by chance!

Wrap my arms around the speaker's, match the octaves, with my voice, and have those frequencies penetrate all the way through my being. I love it! I match the frequency, and the music and I merge and become one, yes I am one with the music! Thank You! Mr. Ronald Pellegrino!

I'm curious as to how this was done, Ronald. Some form of 'visualiser', or through coding? I'm speaking of the visual part, of course, but the music intrigues me, too. Great combination.

This is amazing as well. About to check out your catalogue of music because to me there seems to be a broad spectrum of emotions portrayed. If that makes sense. By our mind's eye we can hear and see the music.

Thanks for getting it - "a broad spectrum of emotions portrayed". Despite how esoteric it is technically the expression of feeling is the key to the power of the arts.

Great to hear from you. Yes indeed the early 70s at Oberlin were a high time for music. For my life I had to move on to San Francisco but for years I missed the music from Oberlin. I wasn't cure until I started attending the world class events in Berkeley and SF.

Admirable. I enjoyed the sounds as much as, maybe more than, the visuals, which seemed subordinate and not always lock-step with the changes in the music. Many may not even want to call this barrage of electronic waves "music". I get it. It's not for everyone, it is a manifestation of a rare and, I might say, refined, sensibility I first encountered in David Tudor's work. He was a reserved and elegant gentleman who made raging, shrieking, sounds from his electronic equipment that seemed so unlike him, the quiet man. I suspect Mr. Pellegrino is a person like this --- quiet on the outside,..................
@RonaldPellegrino
@RonaldPellegrino 4 года назад
People who know my work know that the light and the sound carry equal weight given that they're generated simultaneously from the same finely tuned algorithm, an area I've been exploring for over 1/2 century. That doesn't mean everyone will appreciate them equally. What makes sound and light so powerful is the feelings they carry given their symbolic connections in articulating time. Very similar to David Tudor my experimental approach is along the lines of ancient shamanistic tendencies which makes the work esoteric to say the least. Pleasing anyone's expectations has never been the object of my work. At this stage thinking back at having presented over 1,000 public shows in the USA and abroad I'm surprised I was ever able to make a living at it with such an attitude. Times have changed.

great sound design! would he cool with some percussive elements in there too. But maybe that's just me
@RonaldPellegrino
@RonaldPellegrino 4 года назад
Check out more of my pieces and you'll hear that I prefer subtle percussive elements. In today's music obvious percussion is way overused thanks to the influence of electronic dance music. Over my 65 years as a composer my use of percussion has been all over the map and most intense when I've worked with choreographers.

The visual relationships are staggering!! How directly or indirectly is the image related to the sound? Is this a direct visualisation of the audio data, or an interpreting algorithm? Feels real nice and raw
@RonaldPellegrino
@RonaldPellegrino 4 года назад
Thanks for noticing Tobo. The sound and the imagery emerge from the same algorithm simultaneously, an area I've been exploring with a variety of means since the 1960s.
