I have yet to hear a live performance by Big Star that isn’t catastrophically awful. They were a broken band long before they hung it up. Such a shame. They sound like they rehearsed every year whether they needed it or not.
Big Star was so far ahead of there time, in the 70s they were playing 90s pop, 20 years ahead of there time. And Alex Chilton going from "The Letter" to any song by Big Star is still unbelievable to me due to difference in his tone.
Very nice and fitting intro by Jay leno. They were the link from many bands to many bands. The road from the Beatles to college rock did go through Memphis stopping by Ardent records.
Orson Welles had such gravitas bordering on self-importance. John Candy conveyed that perfectly. I can only imagine the clash of egos when Welles encountered Hemingway.
Just in case someone notices, at 1:12, there’s this blip where something comes across the screen. It’s on for only a split second. Don’t bother looking at it. It’s just a shot of Billy crystal with his mouth wide open like he’s yelling; next to the image of his face is the title of the show “the Billy crystal comedy hour”. I spent five minutes trying to pause to figure out what it was. Trust me, it’s not worth the time lol.
