It seems severally misguiding to the patients to suggest that SCA12 is "treated" with DBS in the video summary above - "This surgery marks the first case of SCA 12 treated with DBS worldwide.". From a person of stature of Dr. Doshi, I would expect the usage of this term with more responsibility and conservatism. My father suffered from SCA12, which Dr. Doshi misdiagnosed as Essential Tremors back in 2003 and asked him to get a DBS surgery *second time* after he had already got it done once from the Bombay Hospital. He claimed that the first surgery at Bombay Hospital was "not done right". He convinced our family that my father's symptoms will be solved after DBS is performed at the Jaslok hospital. After the second surgery, my father had temporary improvement (~6months) in the tremors but it was no better than after the first time surgery. 6-12 months post surgery by Dr. Doshi, my father started having tremors again and onset of gait/walk imbalance and speech slurring. My father died this year in June with the useless DBS electrodes and pacemaker still in his body for over 20 years. Any patients considering the treatment options for SCA12, please research for yourself, All the present research points to SCA12 as non-treatable, with a few medicinal options to control symptoms. DBS specifically has been shown to have only limited benefits for tremors, but no benefit for ataxia and speech slurring, which are also SCA12 symptoms. This also appears to be the reason that no impact on other symptoms is mentioned here. DBS is considered as an extreme modality for SCA12, which is only recommended in rare cases. Unfortunately, it seems to be the case of a man with a hammer in his hand to whom everything looks like a nail. Suggesting expensive and intrusive DBS for patients with any kind of tremors, whether or not it significantly improves their quality of life is severally misguiding the patients. I chanced upon this video because we became aware of SCA12 recently after my brother also started experiencing tremor similar to my dad. This time we will NOT be seeking consultation from Dr. Doshi.
